Take a shower after this episode

Michael Jackson as a man who pretends to be Michael Jackson to bring joy to people's lives? Epic.

Johnny Cash as Homer's Spirit Guide? Awesome.

Lady Gaga in a fawning, twenty-two minute commercial for Lady Gaga? Yuck.

This could have been a good Lisa episode. It started with a strong plot in which Lisa is voted least popular at Springfield Elementary. The thing I don't understand about this episode, unfortunately the biggest part of the episode, is Lady Gaga's inclusion. Apparently in the Simpsons' Universe, Gaga is a Christ-like entertainer who can literally sense when someone is unhappy about themselves. This is all, in a very perplexing manner, played straight by the show. Only her most-publicized quirks are lambasted in any way - other than that she's accepted as a hero. I know Gaga has spoken out against bullying; that's all well and good. To me, when it comes to celebrities, Pat Tillman was a hero. Lady Gaga? Not so much.

One of the best moments in the episode comes when Lisa stands up to Gaga. That's quickly swept under the rug. It's unfair that the best part of the episode is watching Homer and Marge attempt to understand and cheer up Lisa. Just Bieber is going to be a guest star next season. This isn't getting any better. Lisa Goes Gaga was the worst episode of season 23 in my opinion. Skip it if you don't want to have to shower afterward.

This episode is a model example of it the modern badness of The Simpsons.
eesainio5 February 2016
Lisa goes Gaga is considered the worst Simpson's episode of all time. IMDb says so, reviewers say so, everywhere people say so. Now I decided to check if it's so bad, because my memory was vague.

Lisa wins a prize at school of the most unpopular and is just a very sad the whole time. Well, Lady Gaga has some kind of power, which he knows when Lisa is sad. And then we follow around when this over-positive, grandiloquent pop star spreads "goodness" everywhere. Sigh.

Like all the followers of the Simpsons, who have some kind of appreciation of the ability, to know that the Simpsons have gone quite unrealistic at present. This episode is a model example of it. I have to admit I didn't hated this episode quite 100%. I liked the scene where Lisa rages at Gaga, which felt quite good. Gaga herself was okay visitor, but the episode is not good. This also just has just a bunch of bad jokes candied with ultra-positive fairy floss. And at the end Lisa thanks Gaga, because he vented his anger on him, and is able to feel good about herself and sing repetitive pop songs again. Double-Sigh.

I'm not sure if this is a bad episode, but it is one of the worst. But perhaps the all-time worst is A Totally Fun thing Bart will never do again.

A dreadful reminder of how far they've fallen
jaredgradients26 May 2014
If I were to compile a list of the 25 best seasons of animated television, The Simpsons Seasons 1-10 would walk into my top 10. The first and last seasons of that bunch are sketchy but I firmly believe that those in between are the greatest seasons of animated television ever broadcast. Consistently hilarious, unashamedly clever and always relevant with a stellar cast of characters. These were the hallmarks of The Simpsons Golden Age.

Unfortunately, everything that made The Simpsons good has deteriorated disastrously in the last ~15 years. There hasn't been an episode that could stand alongside those of old in 5 years and the general quality has taken nose-dive. Most characters have become caricatures of themselves; Homer is no longer an honest, loving father but a selfish, near-sociopathic asshole; the continuity that has always been loose but was once coherent is now in tatters; subtlety has died a painful death, to the extent that some jokes are even explained and repeated several times in case the viewer didn't get it; and worst of all the shameless bastardisation of it all, reducing episodes to 22-minute long advertisements packed full of extremely clever and hilarious parodies of popular products (Apple=Mapple LOL, they must have spent weeks on that) and plots driven almost exclusively by B-Z list "stars" flaunting themselves and their own products.

"Lisa Goes Gaga" is the embodiment of the latter. I didn't laugh once in this episode. It is literally an advertisement for Lady Gaga. I remember when guest stars used to voice characters within the show back when The Simpsons was good. Gaga plays herself in this episode and the entire plot revolves around her and her music.

This episode is 2 years old now but I saw it recently and sought it out on IMDb specifically to express my hatred for the worst episode I've seen. RIP The Simpsons

Worst Episode Ever Warning: Spoilers
No, seriously. This was the worst episode ever in the entire series.

It would be redundant and obvious to say that "The Simpsons" went downhill many years ago, but somehow this episode managed to surpass all the bad and despised moments in the entire history of this show.

I can't believe that I'm saying this, "Lisa Goes Gaga" managed to be even worse than the atrocious "That 90's Show". The whole episode feels pretty much as something written by a Lady Gaga fan, with many painfully unfunny jokes and dire cultural references.

All the brilliance, all the intelligent satire and clever humor that "The Simpsons" used to have are completely absent here. It was almost like watching a completely different series. A much, much worse one.

This episode was worthless. "The Simpsons" just can't sink any lower than this.

Worst Simpsons episode to date.
azz159628 July 2013
Normally I enjoy watching The Simpsons, although recently I believe that the episodes have been going downhill ever since they introduced modern cultural references such as "Mapple", its the ultimate way to sell out and try to get more young audience because they can connect more to the material, and this episode is the cream on the sell out pie. Shameless self-promotion of Lady Gaga in an attempt to try to say to kids "Look kids, we know what you like, and adding modern references means we don't need funny jokes or any smart material, please like us!". And this isn't the only problem, the plot line is incredibly weak, consisting of Lady Gaga just trying to make people feel better (Seriously this plot is more sappy than the Care Bears if they were covered in candy and glitter!) and the jokes in the episode just aren't funny, this seems to be a major problem with the more recent Simpsons episodes.

Overall I'd say definitely skip this one. Worst Simpsons episode to date.

2/10.

Yeah, it's terrible...
kaimoney23 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After the amount of rants on this one episode, I actually feel stupid deciding to watch it. And yes it was terrible like everyone says it is.

All this episode does is praise Lady Gaga like she's the God of Springfield. Not only that, but this episode also has Lisa being miserable because she's unpopular at school. So Lady Gaga tries to help her, but then Lisa yells at her and apparently she learns a lesson for that.

Yeah apparently yelling at someone makes you feel better. So Lisa is being awful and yet she is being rewarded for this. Like I am lost at this point. I think my brain stopped working while watching this...

Well in conclusion, it's not the worst episode of The Simpsons, but it's up there definitely.

Not as bad as people
adamlennard26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the Simpsons as a kid sadly by about season 20 I found it hard to watch every week because of grown up commitments. So I'd heard this was the worst episode ever and actually it was ok not great but nowhere near as bad as people say. I definitely laughed a few times though because of the Simpsons not Gaga. I can understand why people didn't like her in this episode I get she's meant to be positive and nice but it's laid on way too thick. Plus her voice performance was just kinda average. The main thing I didn't like was horrible people were to Lisa for seemingly no reason.

This is one of the worst episodes of any show, ever
flowever-2889617 August 2021
What made 'The Simpsons' popular and unique in 1989 was its social commentary on American life. That's what set it apart from other cartoon family shows like 'The Flintstones,' and the comedy of the show in the first 8 seasons made it golden. That being said, the show should have ended with season 8! The show garnered traction by giving insightful and original commentary on consumer and celebrity culture, but the issue with this era of the show is that 'The Simpsons' is now immersed in that very culture (being one of the largest enterprises on television), which is evident within these garbage episodes of the show featuring celebrity guests like 'Lady Gaga' playing themselves. The new writers have lost touch with what made the earlier seasons great. I feel like what makes newer Fox shows like 'Bob's Burgers' better than 'The Simpsons' nowadays is the rare use of celebrity guests on 'Bob's Burgers', while still creating insightful and realistic plot points that culminate in a relatable lesson at the end of each episode. 'The Simpsons' is ironically gravitating toward and imitating the comedy style that made 'Family Guy' notorious since its premiere in 1999 (this is ironic because 'Family Guy' has always been accused of "copying" 'The Simpsons' when the current writing of 'The Simpsons' closely resembles the style that 'Family Guy has stuck with for 22 years: simply by wasting time in the episode and executing unauthentic concepts. This style works with 'Family Guy' because it's what made them famous, as their plot-writing was never praised as being golden, but it was able to generate comedy at almost any situation which was what the fans came for. This does not work with 'The Simpsons' because since the beginning of the show, the fans have become attached to the original style that made the first 8 seasons special. The use of celebrity guests, especially, to complete a plot-point is very derivative of 'Family Guy').

I started watching at season 16 and this was one of the best episodes i've seen since then. Not really sure what everyones problem is. I'm guessing it must be a hate campaign by Mothers Against Fun, like the Janet Jackson superbowl thing.

Anyways, watch it, its great.

The Worst Episode of This Show I Have Ever Seen in My Life, Bar None.
j-jessie-weaver4 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Being a fan of "The Simpsons," I feel offended and insulted at how utterly horrible "Lisa Goes Gaga" truly is. I just watched the episode on my computer and I now see why fans of the show hate it. It is the absolute worst thing this cartoon has ever put out.

The episode's first half is about how miserable Lisa is. It's almost like she's turned into Meg Griffin from "Family Guy;" an adult cartoon I hate with a passion. I was never a fan of Lisa, I find her to be an OK character, but she didn't deserve the cruelty that was given to her in this episode.

Then, all of a sudden, Lady Gaga comes to Springfield to try and make Lisa happy. I don't like Lady Gaga or her music, and her voice acting in this is terrible. She doesn't even try to put emotion or energy into her animated counterpart and just comes off as a shallow puppet.

The jokes in "Lisa Goes Gaga" are anything but funny. They range from downright mean-spirited to incomprehensibly stupid. There's one scene near the end where Moe gets run over by a train. How is that funny and how can the writers expect us to laugh at that? I can only hope this show does not go into "Family Guy's" route.

"Lisa Goes Gaga" is an episode you won't enjoy. It's mean-spirited, ugly and disgusting. The only part I liked was Gaga and Lisa's duet on stage, but that's about it. Even that nice moment can't save this episode from being atrociously awful. My advice is, avoid it.

It's like I'm watching a Lady Gaga commercial and it isn't a good episode I'm afraid.
Theraxorterminate13 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"Lisa Goes Gaga" is too weird and different for a Simpsons episode. What actually annoyed me was the fact that the news and even the newspapers in my country were keep telling us that Lady Gaga was going to appear on a Simpsons episode and it got tedious. Personally I'm not a Gaga fan, but I have found some of her songs alright but even though the song Poker-Face annoys me these days. And after watching this episode it was a pity that Lady Gaga had to appear on all the sequences and everyone saw her as a goddess!

It's true! You will be seeing much of her in the whole episode and it becomes so overrated to see her appearing in almost every situation especially when she's about helping Lisa. Some of the jokes never really made sense or worked well. But I seriously would like to ask the writers why on Earth did you guys have to put Lady Gaga on the whole episode?

OK but Lady Gaga isn't the only problem here, the Lisa plot didn't really felt like a good presentation. I just didn't think the idea of the teachers making a list of the most and the least popular students was a creative idea. And of course Lisa became the least popular student and it just makes me disappointed that it only makes Lisa look bad without further help or better support instead of Gaga herself.

It is without a doubt one of the Worst Episodes Ever made. This episode never really worked well. It concentrates too much on Gaga and the whole episode is just annoying and absurd on a bad way.

Is it recommended? Not really. Skip this episode.

Represents everything that is wrong with modern day Simpsons
TheLittleSongbird29 June 2016
When it first started, 'The Simpsons' was clever, hilarious, smart and often touching with memorable ground-breaking characters and story lines.

Unfortunately, 'The Simpsons' has been past its best for a long time now (about half its run now), and of all the episodes "Lisa Goes Gaga" is one of those particularly bad at representing everything wrong with modern day Simpsons. It is often considered the worst 'Simpsons' episode ever, or one of the worst, and this reviewer cannot disagree.

The animation is still quite good, detailed and colourful, and the theme tune is a classic. Of "Lisa Goes Gaga" itself however, the only good part is Lisa going mad at Lady Gaga, one of the rare successful attempts at depth, emotional impact and creativity of not just the episode but of all the later episodes, and it's the only scene where there is any hint of Lady Gaga as an ordinary person and not just some megastar. It's not really enough to save the episode however, because it comes too late and also the problems are so glaring and almost offensive.

"Lisa Goes Gaga" has two big problems. The bigger of the two being that it feels too much like a 22-minute Lady Gaga commercial, which will be heaven for fans but a nightmare for those who can't stand her. This reviewer is of neither extreme, reasonably indifferent actually, but even I found the choice of music and self-promotion over-powering everything else and nauseating. Also Lady Gaga is not very compelling here, she's true to character and there is the sense of what makes her controversial but she doesn't come across as particularly memorable or likable and Lady Gaga's voice acting itself is flat and pretty charmless.

Its second problem is something that has plagued the later seasons badly for ages now, it's just not funny and just feels too far removed from when the show was at its best. The jokes are lazy, often cringe-worthy and mean-spirited, there are too many cultural and pop culture references that don't fit at all comfortably within the story and writing. Long gone is the razor-sharpness, satiric bite and wit, and replaced with dialogue that sounds dumb, sometimes childish, often unnecessarily crass and very leaden.

The story fails to engage, Lisa's story had so much potential and could have been really heart-warming but is vastly overshadowed by the whole stuff with Lady Gaga. The storytelling is very annoying and lays on so heavily with the sugar that it'll make your teeth ache. All the regular characters featured are either bland or out of type in the most bizarre of ways, not talking about Homer, he's been obnoxious, stupid and bad father figure for a long time, but mainly Lisa and Marge also does something out of character and it's her one memorable bit.

It's hard to praise the voice acting when it's very talented voice actors having to work with incredibly bad material, they do their best but all have done much more inspired work.

Overall, very poor episode and represents everything wrong with the later seasons of 'The Simpsons'. One of the worst episodes of the entire show's history too. 2/10 Bethany Cox

In the wise words of Comic Book Guy, this is the 'Worst. Episode. Ever.'
blakephilipthomas24 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I thought that Lisa was meant to have a strong feminist role in the Simpsons, but this just showed her as a perky fangirl! It's like she completely changed and I am not liking it. Also adding the fact that she needs to stand up for herself if she's unpopular or being bullied, because she is, in fact, Lisa Simpson.

Not to forget that this is just a parody episode of Lady Gaga helping people feel happy, which is also a weak storyline. No one actually likes this episode, and no one wanted it to be created in the first place.

Overall, this takes the cake as the most boring episode ever, and there are several others that have a slightly smaller slice, but still big, as the Simpsons is the best TV show ever.

Pass the sick bucket please.
zacpetch7 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Lady Gaga is a talented musician, there's no denying that. But this episode of The Simpsons is literally a half-hour promotion for her that nobody wanted.

I have nothing against musicians appearing on this show. Who can forget Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash or three of The Beatles? This is just as memorable but in a different way. A vomit inducing way.

The plot sees Lady Gaga show up at Springfield where she decides to help improve Lisa's self-esteem after a psychic vision tells her to. She succeeds and then the episode ends with them performing a duet. I'd feel physically sick but Gaga kissing Marge had already produced the vomit by then.

There's nothing to like here. The episode is effectively one long gag about Gaga's eccentricities and a rehashing of all her most "shocking" moments such as that infamous Meat Dress. It's as if to simultaneously say "Look at us kids, aren't we relevant" and "F*** you actual fans!"

I can't stress this enough so I'll spell it out for you: AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

sannaaselin12 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you don't love Lady Gaga then maybe it isn't for you. I did enjoy this episode and the focus on Lisa. And Gaga's persistence on Lisa feeling better was really funny. Generally a sweet episode with good music. A bit slow at times but it redeemed itself with the music and their interactions. I was surprised to see that this episode was the worst rated because it is not the worst I have seen. Comedy is not the focus but I don't mind it. Also hearing Homer sing at the end of the episode was really funny in my opinion. Last but not least, It's not an episode you need to rewatch but maybe watch it once if you love Lisa and Lady Gaga. I do and I enjoyed it.

Sugarcoated garbage!
meglifkaddy19 December 2015
I loathe, loathe, LOATHE this episode. I'm taking this from somebody who even wrote and made his own video of the top 10 worst Simpsons episodes, but I will agree with him, Anyway, in his words, there are good episodes, then there's bad episodes, then there's crap episodes, then...and THEN...there's "Lisa Goes Gaga", a half hour sugarcoated hypocritical mess.

Avoid this episode while you can. It's not the fact that Lady Gaga is in it herself, it's just the episode itself, it's so pointless! I'd rather watch paint dry than this rubbish.

The Simpsons has really lost it's charm and after "Love Is a Many Strangled Thing", "Boys of Bummer", "Saddlesore Galactica" and "Homer vs Dignity"< this is definitely one of the worst pieces of animation I've seen from Matt Groening's beloved dysfunctional TV family.

GlazedMercury22 December 2021
Worst. Episode. Ever.

There are many episodes where Lisa feels outcast from her peers, but this one is the worst I've ever seen. Having guest stars be the main part of the episode is one of the biggest mistakes the Simpsons ever made. If I could rate this episode 0/10, I would.

Big-Lipped Alligator Episode
alice-authorbooks-ogorma14 August 2015
5.5?

Really?

I haven't seen this episode in a long time, but I know it was terrible. The only reason I sat the whole way through was because of all the hype.

Lisa is taunted by the other kids - again. Lady Gaga's train goes by Springfield. (This does not surprise me, as she'd need to move quickly.)

But suddenly she gets a - psychic vision? - that a little girl is in trouble. This is never explained. Nor does it come back.

Not so much a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment as Big-Lipped Alligator EPISODE.

The outfits? Nuttier with each one. Lady Gaga being a role model for Lisa? No.

Other female role models have appeared on The Simpsons in the past, some of whom Lisa has had an interest in. Elizabeth Taylor, Linda McCartney, J.K Rowling.

So they decide to 'move with the times' and pick a singer instead, like in the past, choose someone who relates to the cause the member of the Simpsons family is fighting for.

So, I only have one further thing to say.

Why, Fox?

I love Lady Gaga, still a great singer, but this is a trainwreck.

A lisa episode of course. Everyone hates her, of course. And she needs to get advice from Lady Gaga, who she later snaps at?

This is a horrid episode! I will always like Lady Gaga, but this is not an episode I want to watch again!

It really is as bad as they say
nathanjhunt13 April 2020
"Why?", is the word that comes to mind when I think of this episode.

I think the only way you'd enjoy it is if you were a hardcore Gaga fan. But even those people would probably find it cringe-inducing.

Why is everyone in town suddenly obsessed with Lady Gaga? This episode stinks of suck up. It breaks my heart to hear of Matt Groening endorsing it, when he has so little to do with the show these days.

Adding insult to injury was the final song at the end. I've never been a fan of Yeardley Smith's voice, but is that seriously the best take they managed to record? She sounds AWFUL.

If you're a hardcore fan like me, then watch this episode if you must... but be prepared to hate it.
