The Nostalgia Critic: Jurassic World (2015)
The Worst Yet.
I've always been a fan of the Nostalgia Critic ever since I found out about him back in about 2010, he was funny, he made valid points, and even introduced me to movies I probably wouldn't have seen in his more positive lists like Doug's Top 20 Favourite Movies, which introduced me to the film Brazil and A Clockwork Orange. But ever since he made his big comeback in (what I like to call) the white wall era, I've noticed a few changes, like his reviews now following plot lines, the addition of side actors (Malcolm and Rachel, who would later be replaced with Tamra, and occasionally Rob), and sketches throughout the episodes and although I don't hate these things, it does make me ask the question "why fix what's not broken?". He was great before, why change what people already loved?
I say all this because it leads me to what I hate about this review, we see nothing of the actual movie, it's all recreated through sketches, so when he tries to tell a joke about the movie, unless you've already seen the film, how are you supposed to get it? For example if he said "this actor in the film looks like this celebrity", how would we find it funny, we can't see the actor. This can be applied to almost every joke in this review. But that aside, are the sketches funny? Far from it, I didn't laugh once throughout this review because its all trying to satire the movie through the sketches, but I have no idea what exactly is being satirized because I haven't seen the movie, and if I had seen the movie, why would I need to see a review of it? I've already got my own opinions on it.
So in conclusion, just stay far away from this episode, luckily he did a very good review of Planet of the Apes (2001) after this, but that doesn't make up for this dreadful episode, honestly people you'll be wishing for another Bart's Nightmare lets play when watching this train wreck, it's that bad.
1/10 - Underwhelming is an understatement.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Underrated? Yes. Perfect remake? Ehhh...
This isn't just one of my favourite remakes, when I was a kid, this was one of my favourite films period. Not only do I think that this is closer to the book than the original, I think that the scenes that were also in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory are actually even better in this remake, but the film does have its problems. Is Johnny Depp's take on Willy Wonka as annoying as everyone says? Honestly I don't think so, but I can see where people who think it is are coming from. Is Charlie's character as overly perfect as everyone says? I guess but when you get down to it, he was written to be a sort of role model to kids, to show them the right values and morals to have.
One good point to note is that the only scene removed from the original in this remake that is noticeable is Willy Wonka's Death Tunnel (as I like to call it) which, lets be honest, was definitely removed for good reason. Take it from someone who was not that phased by films such as The Shining and Alien that the Death Tunnel scene from the original is scary enough to scar kids for life, and if that was remade in this remake... *shudders at the thought of a new Death Tunnel scene*
I think one reason this film gets quite a lot of hate is because the hate is coming from fans of the original film, but I think that what they don't realise is that this film was not so much a remake of the old film, but more a new film adaption from the book by Roald Dahl drawing little inspiration from the original movie and more from the original source, the book. And considering Roald Dahl actually didn't like the original movie for not being close enough to the book, it was probably for the best.
Overall I'd see this film is definitely a great watch for Roald Dahl fans, but maybe not for die hard fans of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and all with less insanely frighting tunnels from hell, meaning no therapy needed after watching this remake!
7/10.
The Simpsons: Lisa Goes Gaga (2012)
Worst Simpsons episode to date.
Normally I enjoy watching The Simpsons, although recently I believe that the episodes have been going downhill ever since they introduced modern cultural references such as "Mapple", its the ultimate way to sell out and try to get more young audience because they can connect more to the material, and this episode is the cream on the sell out pie. Shameless self-promotion of Lady Gaga in an attempt to try to say to kids "Look kids, we know what you like, and adding modern references means we don't need funny jokes or any smart material, please like us!". And this isn't the only problem, the plot line is incredibly weak, consisting of Lady Gaga just trying to make people feel better (Seriously this plot is more sappy than the Care Bears if they were covered in candy and glitter!) and the jokes in the episode just aren't funny, this seems to be a major problem with the more recent Simpsons episodes.
Overall I'd say definitely skip this one. Worst Simpsons episode to date.
