No Need to Grade it, It's an A
dismaldream17 November 2011
I must echo the previous reviewers sentiments regarding this episode: it truly is one of the memorable and meaningful of the series.

I recently caught this episode again and I was surprised just how much of it I remembered - nearly the entire episode: not bad for not having watched it for 20 years. And thats unmistakably whats so great about this particular episode: it is heartwarming and heartwretching watching Kevin truly embrace his emotions and not be as confused by them like he usually is. We also empathize/sympathize with his loss because we've seen Kevin and Mr Collins go back and forth for a while now (This, i believe, is Mr Collins third time being the centerpiece of the episode).

Whats also amazing re-watching these episodes is the chance we now all have to look back on our own lives. First watching this when I was not even a teenager, I merely viewed it as a chance to get to know how it was like growing up in the late 60s/early 70s middle America. Now however, I do reminisce about my past teachers and how i appreciate them now.

One last notable item about this episode is the end song: Linda Ronstadt's Goodbye my Friend is fitting and if you happen to be in a reminiscing state, it might catch you vulnerable.

Mr. Collins

I admit it; I cried at the end of this outstanding episode. Everything about this particular episode was perfect. Outstanding acting and a fantastic script. If you have ever met someone who truly inspired you to be a better person, then you can understand how this touched my heart. I gave it a 10 out of 10, yet the melancholy ending stayed with me for a while..Still this is probably the best episode of the entire series.

Best episode of the series - top 5 in Television
barnsleylad49497 January 2021
This is just an outstanding episode in every way. Steven Gilborn is just phenomenal as Mr. Collins. The chemistry between him and Kevin is amazing. The storyline is completely believable and relatable in so many ways. The ending with the music from Linda Ronstadt is the cherry on top. This is hands down the best episode of the entire series. In fact, it may be one of the top five episodes of any series on TV. Ever. An absolute must watch.

Comparing "Math Class" to "Goodbye"
hitchin-0775525 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Goobye," one of the more touching episodes of "The Wonder Years."

Mr. Collins reminded me SO much of my junior high math teacher, Mr. Lalasz. Mr. Lalasz was one of the reasons I BECAME a math teacher, myself.

I especially enjoyed how the writers book ended the first episode we were introduced to, Mr. Collins.

At the very end of that episode, "Math Class," Kevin walks up, turns in his test and says "You don't need to grade it. It's an 'F'."

Then in this episode, "Goodbye," at the end, Kevin hands his test to Mr. Diperna, he says "You don't need to grade it, it's an 'A'."

One of the best "Wonder Years" Episodes Ever
jenld1029-125 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Collins is a difficult math teacher and Kevin is having a hard time in class. But with a little inspiration and nudging, Kevin learns to appreciate the older gentleman's tutelage. Kevin learns to respect Mr. Collins and actually starts enjoying his class, as he sees it not only as a challenge, but also as the opportunity to learn something. You can see that the two characters are starting to connect and understand one another as Kevin starts to get serious about the class and Mr. Collins embraces this seriousness and works with Kevin to help him learn. This episode is a complete gem and a treat to watch. Clearly one of the best, if not the best, episodes in this program's run ever!

One of the best

Warning: Spoilers
All credit to the late Steven Gilborn for his touching performance as Mr Collins in one of the finest episodes of The Wonder Years. I remember seeing this with friends, and we were very moved by this emotional episode that touches all the buttons. To this day I still have very vivid memories of this episode of The Wonder Years, which has to be one of the best series ever.

Also all credit to the writing team for such an endearing story, as it was quite unpredictable in parts, and it ending up being a story of redemption for Kevin.

The fact this episode alone has over 300 user votes with a 9.6 ranking says volumes for this memorable episode of The Wonder Years.

No Need to Grade it, It's an A

Warning: Spoilers
As others have said, this is an absolutely magnificent episode of a show that has such amazing consistency.

I think everyone wishes they had/or may have even had a teacher like Mr Collins, and the relationship between him and Kevin was beautifully played out over three episodes.

This final one is so wonderfully written and performed, with the music at the end being inch perfect, I think it is very hard not to shed a tear at it.

Exceptional television - how does this show not get more recognition here in the UK??

Farewell Mr. Collins
hellraiser729 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

As I've left many schools, there are times I sometimes think about certain teachers I've had and everything they taught me and how much they've helped me in becoming the person I am. This is my second favorite episode of the show as well as another of my favorite episodes in general. It's one of the saddest but also touching episode I ever seen. But also, really gives you a deep appreciation for teachers, on a side note my mom is a teacher herself.

Not a lot to say, I really like seeing the back and forth between both Collins and Kevin and though it we really do see a bond being formed but sadly Kevin is unable to confirm that it exists. Kevin has always had an admiration for most of the teachers he's had in his life as they were always like friends to him, the fact Collins doesn't show any hint of this stirs Kevin up making Kevin challenge Collins just to know where they stand.

But Kevin we see gets the worst news of his life when he just passes away. We see it hits Kevin like a gut punch, it even hit me and a lot of my friends as well because I honestly didn't see it coming which made it all the more heartsinking.

We see Kevin in emotional turmoil as he feels guilty about challenging him little knowing that was his final day with Collins, that's an awful feeling to have just realizing how yesterday with someone was their last day. Sadly, this is a fact of life as no one ever has all the time in the world.

But Kevin starts to find out a lot more about Collins and realize all this time Collins always was his friend which I'll admit was heartwarming; Kevin then does what he must do at the end which was Kevin way to honor Collins memory.

The final minutes I'll admit made me cry, when Kevin looks back at Mr. Collins desk and he sees Mr. Collins one more time, both exchange a few final words together which is both friends saying farewell. And of course, there is that music "Goodbye my Friend" which is just beautiful and sad and then we see a final shot of a photo of Mr. Collins which shows how Collins in in Kevin's hall of fame of friends.

So, Farewell Mr. Collins, like you and many other teachers just like the lessons you've teached you'll never be forgotten.

Beautiful and heartbreaking
sheepandsharks17 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What is there to say? This is a perfect episode of television.

Even knowing what's to come (which is not difficult to decipher about halfway through the episode, if you know your tropes), it feels just as cruel and shocking for us as it does for Kevin. It also perfectly captures that confusing childhood experience of losing a trusted figure in your life who wasn't family, leaving you feeling upset and angry and detached and a bit lost, all at once.

Kevin's crushing realization that he let Mr. Collins down right before the end is incredibly heartbreaking... Until we learn, of course, that Mr. Collins has Kevin's back and believed in him all along. Beautiful.

The "you don't have to grade it" quote coming back around to bookend the entire Collins storyline was the perfect cherry on top.

Huge impact, sad, encouraging and tragic at the same time.
creedfinancialgroup29 January 2024
One of my favorite episodes of any tv show ever. I'm very willing to admit that my 55 year old eyes cried more than my 20 something eyes did back in the day this came out. Anytime I think of Wonder Years, this episode is always at top. The relationship between student and teacher couldn't have been more touching and yet relatable and appropriate. Do we still have teachers like this in the world out there these day? I suppose there may be, but I'll bet there are far too few. Mr. Collins was about as perfect as a teacher could get. This was just perfect writing when it comes to TV which seems non-existent today and even back then.

Top notch episode a homage for ours school Masters!!
elo-equipamentos4 April 2024
Quite sure the best episode of the entire series until now, it reminds me my old scholar Masters that allowed much time in my study progress, almost all them, nonetheless one in peculiar way as happened with Kevin although in Inglish matter, where he learned me and my brother off hours for one week, now watching Goodbye it hurts me deeply due the good nature Professor Mr. Collins (Steven Gilborn) sounds like my English teacher Mr. Bernardino.

In this story Kevin wants be make an upgrade at your average mathematic grades, due Prof. Collins often wrote a note at Paul's exam, it triggers on Kevin an approaching in the brooding master, wondering draw attention, perceiving it Prof. Collins offers him an extra class off hour aiming for an improvement over Kevin medium grades, meanwhile Kevin wants just a recognition, at last Kevin is convinced by Prof. Collins that he can gets an A grade if he really strive hardly, upon it both starting it after long class and exhaustive learning hours, when out of the blue near of final exams the Professor Collins stop learning without no further explanation, Kevin becomes pissed.

At final exam Kevin didn't answered any questions whatsoever, instead he'd making several questions in unpolite manner, by receiving Kevin's exam the kindly Professor tries figure out what's going happened with Kevin on strange behavior, the final outcome is too much touching, allowing to Kevin tries overcame such outrageous act of defiance.

Thanks for reading.
