Des celebrates a brand new series with guests including Engelbert Humperdinck, Jeremy Beadle and The Commitments, but the critics aren't so keen on the long-established formula, with the show slated in The Stage.
Benny Hill makes a rare appearance as Alfred Hawthorne Hill - the real person behind the TV persona. Admitting he hates to appear as himself, Benny jokes about rumours that he's a recluse. Included among the other guests is Mariah Carey.
Des gets two Rosses on the show, as he reminds Diana Ross that they'd previously worked together way back in 1968, and performs an Elvis duet with Jonathan. Also on the show are Paul Shane, Belinda Carlisle and Michael Bolton.
"You're turning me on!" Neil Diamond tells Des after being joined in a duet of "Sweet Caroline". Neil also sings tracks from his new album, and Tina Turner, Stephanie Beacham, Frank Skinner and Erasure make up a packed show.
