The Village (2004)

Cold hard story telling. Rich and highly rewarding film.
10 August 2004
Shyamalan has produced another fabulously rewarding film. Beautiful and epic, this movie blends fairy tale and idealistic themes with that of our modern filthy amoral humanity. Critical social commentary runs deep in the film, showing the stylings given by the director in his previous works such as Unbreakable and Signs. I thank Shyamalan for continuing to tell beautiful stories.

Bryce Dallas Howard is a stand out performer in one her first major films showing great emotion and ability. A gritty perspective shows the audience the beauty in all things innocent and the importance of sacrifice. Shyamalan fans will be drawn to it.

A fresh film for those looking for fresh perspective on family
29 June 2002
This film offers the audience much in the way of insight into how families can be dysfunctional yet functional at the same time. Few of us cannot empathise with at least a little of the subject matter raised. I recommend that the blockbuster fans break their normal viewing diet to catch this one. A real satisfying film.

An interesting action / crime flick
29 June 2002
The cast alone makes this film worthy of a quick look. Brad Pitt excels in a role that he has consistently proved himself in. The movie relys heavily on using a plot twist. This creates fresh perspective for such a film style but it has traditionally been hard to raise such a film style away from the 'predictable plot twist' created by its wide spread use. All in All a film worth seeing quickly. Certainly not one to challenge an audience or break ground, but interesting none the less.

A well crafted sci/fi story. An interesting story line
29 June 2002
Spielberg has made an interesting movie. The use of futuristic imagery and law enforcement flavours blend well. The tale carries the audience in such a way that there is no time for relaxation. At times the movie had a fell about it that it was not so much one full, thick story but rather a sequence of well made scenes tacked together. Cruise did a good job with the role of a bewildered cop but did not differ sufficiently from his mission impossible role in my opinion. All in All a movie must for sci/fi viewers and a movie maybe for the blockbuster fans.

Unbreakable (2000)

Rich, dark superhero story (without the spandex!) 7/10
30 November 2000
This offering from the director of 'The Sixth Sense' provides a dark, moody depiction of the spectrum of good vs evil. The film's hard, filth ridden view of modern life sets an excellent scene from which the not so likely hero of good may be illuminated. The films cast is squarely suited to the cold, slow screenplay. Bruce Willis excels in the leading role which contains suprisingly little anger or comedy, the usual trademarks of Willis. Not a film for those wanting action packed suspense but a valuable study of the nature of heroics none the less. 7/10

Promises a lot, delivers little. 5/10
22 November 2000
The Whole Nine Yards combines a quirky, arguably workable script with a dynamite cast. The blend of comedy & suspense makes for fair screenplay. However, much of it's dark, slapstick humor may be considered in poor taste depending on the expectations of the audience.

The product doesn't quite live up to the promise inherent in such a strong, capable cast. The fact that the film is co-produced by Willis and brother, and a swag of product placements leads me to believe this may have been little more than a money spinner for Willis & Co.

Only worth a look for the easily entertained. 5/10

Unexpectedly Awesome ! 7/10

This film sets the conditions for great science fiction: raising more questions than it actually answers. The close proximity of the set allows for high levels of character development. The script weaves the diverse character group together in a highly strung race for survival that is only let down by lack of creative synergy within the low budget cast. Truly a must see sci/fi. 7/10

6/10: Highly seductive despite its obvious VHS creation
21 November 2000
This movie is closely linked to the erotics of seduction and deception. Despite the obvious 'straight to video' low budget nature of the film, it still manages to entertain and create suspense. 6/10
