Scream 3 (2000)
10/10
Finally closure...
1 July 2000
To start, I love the original two films in the series and so obviously I was overly-hyped to see this supposed conclusion piece in the modern day classic slasher trilogy. Knowing that Kevin Williamson dropped out, and word that Neve Campbell may be next seemed to give the film a preemptive ill-fate feel. The outcome is fantastic. Personally, the first is and always will be the best in the series, and I'm not sure which comes next between two and three. There is the return of horror director Wes Craven, accompanied by Neve Campbell's nice portrayel of an innocent victim, Sidney Prescott, Courtney Cox Arquette's savvy reporter, Gale Weathers, and David Arquette's oafish deputy, Dewey Riley. This time the script is written by Ehren Kruger who gave us the excellent Arlington Road, though Williamson is obviously absent. The dialogue is a bit different, and the chills are lost a bit in too much self-referential dialogue. The cameo by Randy is great, as is this film. My few complaints come from the complete lack of gore, the somewhat less than impactful conclusion where the killer is revealed, and a mistake with police photos of Sidney I am surely one of the few who noticed. The film is excellent and it brings wonderful closure. I have to say that right now, this is the strongest horror series, for all of its films are mesmerizing. Halloween (the best horror film by far) was accomanied by two good sequals, two and seven, yet three through six were wretched. A Nightmare on Elm Street was great, as was Wes Craven's New Nightmare, but two through six sucked royally from bad one-liners and cheesy effects. Friday the 13th never had an astounding film, and from the rumors of Jason X, set in outer space, there never will be a great one. Don't miss Scream 3 for its one of the few teen slashers of the nineties that still holds its intelligence.

Fright fest that holds strong
2 April 2000
Director Tobe Hooper brought us this low-budget chiller in the early 70's, and I'm guessing only true horror fans have actually seen it, and likely they will be the only ones who will want to. The film is jammed full of unrelenting terror and madness, with a twisted and sick feeling covering the film. The movie is a fantastic piece of classic horror that still manages to supply fright, with little gore and simply implied violence. What is truly scary is the set and atmosphere. The idea alone is just plain macabre. A family in rural Texas slaughters teens to supply barbecue for their local gas station. The film set the standard of horror "slasher" films, and is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. The film is definitely not for everyone though. If you love horror, see it today, you will not be disappointed. Others, steer clear of this film. It may be a brilliant flick, but you likely won't be able to handle the insanity.

Wes Craven's Masterpiece
26 September 1999
This film, the first installment in the seven part series creates a dark premise, and a hideous madman, along with a clever storyline, all created by a horror great, Wes Craven. His work on this, the third, and the seventh, are the reason the series is popular in the horror genre. The film displays a tense and frightening feel that lets you wonder, what if your dreams could really hurt you. This is very successful. The film's only let downs are the cheesy ending scene ( mom through the window ) and the fact the it spawned a wretched, repulsive set of sequels, that excludes number seven, which is just as intelligent, if not more than this. In the later films, Freddy tosses of more bad one liners than Arnold Schwarzeneggar films. He becomes a joke. This film keeps him as a frightening figure, and is set up well by good direction, a plot, and reasonable acting. See this film, and then see Wes Craven's New Nightmare. They are both extremely intelligent and fun. Skip the 2-6. I've warned you....

The Evil Dead (1981)
A disgusting film which is both strong and weak in areas
14 September 1999
I didn't have high expectations when I rented this film, but I thought, hey, maybe it'll be one of those unexpected masterpieces. For one, I rented Halloween after just reading an article, and it has become one of my most treasured favorites. This film though had its ups and downs. The acting is better than I expected, yet still off in moments. The dialogue isn't there, especially for the tiny amount which the film has. The effects are many times laughable, and the plot is scarcely there. What's left you ask? The direction is fantastic. It puts you into this world and carries you crazily along for the ride. The angles and shakiness are pretty effective. This is really the film's highlight. The setting is very wonderful. Not original, I grant you, yet still, it carries a deep eerieness about it. It reminds me of the creepy setting of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The gore flows in gallons at the screen. It made me cringe, and that was pretty interesting. From the bleeding cabin, the pencil to the ankle, the decapitation, the chopping, the eating of the bodies, the tearing of bodies, and the barely there bodies, to the hands through the skin. The gore is all there, and very visible. The squeemish be warned. This actually is probably one of the most revolting films. Which I know may attract some. The film is strong in those moments and yet has too many weak moments to make it a great film. I guess it is a classic in many aspects, yet not in others. I just can't take a movie entirely serious when a girl is raped by a tree, and a corpse giggles like a ditzy cheerleader. If I had to name a moment that I hated, it would be the tree and the girl, or the board to the obviously rubber person. If I had to pick the best moment, I'd say the final shot of the camera rushing through the buildings to Ash's face, or the opening tour of the pond, both wonderfully done. I'm sketchy about renting the sequel. If anyone wants to e-mail me and explain the film to me, and tell me if I'd like it, I'd be very thankful. All-in-all, a movie you may love and be terrified by, or a movie you will crap your pants from laughing too hard.

Funny as hell!
30 August 1999
If you like Lisa Kudrow on Friends, well she plays a somewhat similar character as Phoebe. Mira Sorvino plays a new role, and Janeane Garofelo plays the perfect role, a cynical, pessemistic, outcast. There are plenty of laughs, especially put out my Lisa Kudrow and Janeane Garofelo ( SP? ). It's hysterical.

Gellar fans only
29 August 1999
If you find Sarah Michelle Gellar irresistible, you'll be able to sit through this. She gives her usual superb performance. Besides her though, is a pitiful, pathetic, and overall bad film. It's worst moments have a crab carried along by strings, which are plainly obvious. There are also a few insanely stupid parts which may have you chucking popcorn at the screen. Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't enjoy this much after she saw it either, so she still gets to keep every ounce of respect. ( As this beautiful, and talented actress should.)

Go (1999)
A teen flick that really isn't
29 August 1999
Some may blow this off as a teen flick, especially after seeing recently released crap like She's All That and Varsity Blues. Go offers wit and wildness to an other wise dull line of recent teen flicks ( Besides Cruel Intentions, great movie ). It offers a talented script, director, and cast, and a fresh way of storytelling. It intertwines three stories of one day, intelligently and enjoyably. You can have your stupidity ( the high guy in the produce section ) and you can have your thrills ( a vegas chase and more ). Go has a lot to offer, so don't blow it off as a teen flick. Hopefully you'll find it thoroughly enjoyable.

The Haunting (1999)
A film that tries to go deep and creep
25 July 1999
The Haunting displays stunning sets, eerie and sometimes pretty realistic special effects. It has a beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones, a talented Liam Neeson, and a reasonable Lili Taylor as Eleanor. The film begins slow and gradually speeds up. Actually, I feel the slow paced area was the better half of the film. The scenes that are supposed to be truly frightening, aren't, and the only moment where the audience is shocked is at the jack-in-the-box scares which come every so often. It's also hard to enjoy a film that is supposed to be terrifying horror, and five year old children line the aisles. The few scenes that are memorable are too few and far appart. The film basically just relies on special effects, which do not make a movie. If you want to see a creepy, intelligent, and ultimately chilling film this summer, see the Blair Witch Project. If you want a so-so, special effects filled movie with a really cheaply bad ending, see this.

American Pie (1999)
reasonable
25 July 1999
It has it's shock value and it's laughs. It is a lesser version of Porky's. If you like sex talk, brief nudity, and a lot of gross out scenes, see this. It has it's downfalls ( Nadia and the bedroom ) and it's lesser humorous moments. i'm a Buffy fan so personally Alyson Hannigan's small role was the best. Also Chris Klein went to my school in Omaha and so I thought I'd see it to support him getting out of this god-awful city. Anyways, if yo're perverse or need a movie to see with friends, you could do a lot worse ( Wild wild West.)

The laugh-riot of the summer
25 July 1999
A mock documentary on beauty pageants where Denise Richards dances with Jesus, A girl barks like a dog, and a girl is happy because she went deaf and knows sign language. It may sound corny, but the laughs keep coming. It is a hilarious film that keeps you laughing from beginning to end. The film makes fun of almost everything, probably even you. If that doesn't bother you, and you're able to laugh at yourself, i reccomend seeing this film. The laughs are tremendous.

Stunning
25 July 1999
A terrorist bomber played by Tim Robbins? I doubted it too, but that's where I made a mistake. I'm glad i was dragged to this film. I left the theater happy. Finally an intelligent film to see while others see Wild wild West. it is an outstanding adult thriller that has many twists and a fantastic ending which I wouldn't dream of giving away. Ehren Krueger { sp?} has written a fantastic film, with great performances. I hope he can do the same great work for scream 3 which he is doing know.

Jawbreaker (1999)
A wicked, funny, twisted flick... I think not
4 July 1999
As Heathers did, this film tries to do. It is supposed to be a clever black comedy that is twisted, sick, and you have a hell of a fun time viewing it. Jawbreaker succeeds in nothing. Absolutely nothing. I like Rose McGowan but as you're supposed to, you don't love her. Rebecca Gayheart is the one you're supposed to root for, I couldn't stand her in this role. And the rest of the cast besides the school's principal, fell flat. That's not their fault, it is the faulty script. Unwitty dialogue and unclever antics make this film a downer. After accidently killing a friend they hatch a cover up scheme yet obviously someone is uncovering it. Now one friend must find a way to prove that her friend killed this girl. I didn't get that factor. It was an accident, yes it turned sick, but Courtney didn't actually, purposefully kill the girl. The ending is predictable, and there is crappy casting. I say this because Marilyn Manson is cast as a man that well... does... his real-life love interest Rose McGowan. It's odd, unfunny, and with a black comedy, it should be witty. This isn't. D-

Big Daddy (1999)
Usual Sandler fare, with a little difference
4 July 1999
When going to an Adam Sandler movie, intelligence is not expected, at least in his characters. This time, intelligence isn't even shown in the writing. I know Sandler wanted to do a more touching comedy, but it can't succeed when you are supposed to be sad and the kid remarks, " but I wipe my own ass." It was cute sure, but for drama, it didn't work. The humor gets old, and if you've seen the trailer, you've seen 99% of the funny, or so-called funny, scenes. The multiple Hooters comments get really old, and they aren't clever in the first place. The film seemed unfullfilling. I don't know what I expected though from a film where Adam Sandler is a good father. I laughed minorly. The first half-utter crap. The second- mediocre. Sandler fans enjoy. Others, stay clear.

Election (1999)
A movie, witty yet not all enjoyable
4 July 1999
I live in Omaha Nebraska where this was filmed so I wanted to see this and Chris Klein went to my school so I thought I'd throw in my support. I saw a special sneek preview and the theater was packed with high school teenagers who attended the school where it was filmed, just to see if they were in it. I sat down and as the movie began, I was laughing pretty early in. I thought the freeze frame on Reese was hilarious and I was having a pretty good time. The film had its shocking ( sex scene where Broderick is picturing Witherspoon, and many others. ) I laughed because I was in a good mood, and who knows, maybe I had a perverse mind state but I was reasonably happy. Then it turned toward Broderick having an affair, and the movie gradually fell flat for me. It became slow and all together unenjoyable, despite the scene where the lesbian sister takes blame in order to get into an all girls school. I didn't laugh to much either. I myself would say it was okay. The other teens in the audience were loud enough to let me overhear and 90% said that they hated it. I guess I was a minority. So, I suppose I'd reccomend it to adults or mature teens. it's a morality tale and a satire which has good performances, yet has its downs placed in especially Broderick's affair. It's not the usual teen movie, and surprisingly it's from MTV which brought us the brain dead and unbelievably crappy Joe's Apartment. See it, yet don't have too many expectations.

One Emotional Thing
4 July 1999
The film displays a family who, with the discovery of a mother's cancer, seems to be falling apart. Renee Zellwegger plays Ellie and her performance is worthy of an oscar. She shows a truly deep emotion, which the audience then feels. William Hurt palys the father and he seems to be a distant, stubborn, yet loving man. His performance is also good. The true thing though is Merly Streep as the mom, Kate Gulden who is dying of cancer. Meryl Streep does an astonishingly emotional, heartwarming, and heartwrenching performance that tugs at your heart and will surely have you believing and crying by the film's conclusion. It's dramatic, touching, and I think it should have been nominated for more awards. Streep should have won best actress because she'll definitely win over you. Also, some may see it as depressing, yet it can also be seen as uplifting. The family comes together and works through the hard times, some better than others. The exact conclusion tells of Kate's death, and it seems shocking and it makes you think. If your mother was dying of Cancer, would you be able to help her from her pain?

In Dreams (1999)
Why, Why, Why, would they do this???
21 June 1999
To say this film was the worst movie I've seen this year would be an understatement. It's one of the worst films of all time, if not, at least of the 90's. I started off not interested about ten minutes in. Then it became worse and worse. The overflowing apples " Oh my god!", and I use full sarcasm. The acting wasn't good, the story tried too hard to be involved and be one of those films where the twists are so shocking, your eyes glaze over. It succeeded in the sense that my eyes glazed over. I stared at the screen in full awe of the utter crap i had actually rented. I feel I should send a receipt to the film company that made this film and demand my money back. It also tries to have scenes where you cheer or are frightened, well when those came... I, oh wait, I was laughing my @$$ off!! It's under my least favorites with Batman and Robin, and Anaconda. Maybe I'm being too harsh... nope!!!

Halloween (1978)
10/10
Classic Cinema
21 June 1999
It opened in 1978, and became the highest grossing independent film ever, that is until Scream. It had a budget of $300,000, only one real name actor, and it only had a filming time of, I believe, 21 days. To say the least it is cheap, in fact there was a single bag of leaves used to make it look like the Fall season. That doesn't mean it's bad. The acting by Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance is wonderful, while the supporting cast has its questionable moments. The story depends on small, creepy moments, and not on gore, unlike much of this Genre. I love some of the recent teen horror films, such as Scream, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but if you're a teenager of today, I'm guessing the possibility may be slim that you'll enjoy it. The direction is fantastic by John Carpenter and the killer himself, Michael Myers is more terrifying than any other, that is in eerie factor. The only other one that is really gasp worthy is Leatherface ( because it really happened ). Still, no other Horror film is more classic than this. Not Psycho, and not the Exorcist. If you enjoy this: Halloween 2= A, Halloween 3= F, Halloween 4= F, Halloween 5= F, Halloween 6>F, Halloween 7 (H20)= A+

The Faculty (1998)
Entertaining
12 June 1999
I'm not a sci-fi buff, yet I am a horror buff. I loved each and every film that Kevin Williamson has worked on, from Scream to Halloween H20. He has once again given a masterpiece film. The cast, all-around is great. Even Elijah Wood, who, to be honest, doesn't really fit this type of film. Stokely and Zeke got my most attention. They gave witty dialogue throughout. Also, I cared for most the characters, and they each had something about them hidden by their exterior. As a teen, I feel that's a truth. For example, Zeke is a slacker, druggy, yet has true intelligence. Stokely is a loner who seems odd, and actually has a crush on the big football jock. It's that type of thing that brings all of Williamson's characters to life. The direction was pretty darn good, except it seemed odd on a few closeups. Also, the film has Selma Hayek, Lilith of Cheers, and Piper Laurie, the freaky mom from Carrie. I mean come on. With thrills ( the pool scene ) good direction, good acting, good characters, and good dialogue. This film is fantastic. June 15th rent it, or buy it on DVD. It definitely should be part of your collection.

FAN FARE
12 June 1999
If you are a true fan of the first, you will most likely salivate at this film. Though the killer (or killers), are (or is) given away early, the surprises and fun are flying on screen, along with the upped amount of gore. Frankly I felt the gore wasn't very extreme, nothing compared to Steve's intestines, and Casey's body in the first. The main characters are strong ( Sidney and Gale ) though I have less emotion for Sidney. Gale has taken on new heights and is still fully enjoyable. Though many were angered at one character's untimely death, fans and those who weren't previously, can still find themselves having an extreme good time. Besides, with cameos by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Wes Craven, and Matthew Lilliard, who could possibly hate this movie. Scream 3 is in planning, and now the LA times reports Mirimax is going to down violence due to Littleton. Let's hope not...

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar... yay!!!!
12 June 1999
Kevin Williamson wrote " Scream " and then this. Though many trashed it because it didn't have the same humor, it still stands out as fun, chilling, and an absolutely stunning movie. The dialogue has wit and still gives some humor though it is a darker script than " Scream ". Jennifer love Hewitt does a great performance and can truly scream. Freddie Prinze Jr. doesn't stand out in anyway. Ryan Phillippe got a good start to his career and though you hate his character, he was good at making you hate him. But the true light shines on Sarah Michelle Gellar who always gives a stellar performance. Her acting is great. Her screams are outstanding, and her chase scene, and well every other scene that she was in truly brought terror and magnificence to this film. The killer, though odd, is fun. You can't really guess who it is until later in the film, yet the audience should have a fun time.

A Fun Ride
12 June 1999
Many reviewers say there is no plot, but I felt it had a worthy plot with the whole DOROTHY concept. In a way, it is a nice tribute to the people who did this in real life. I believe it is Howard Bluestein (?), and he created a device called TOBY, and did a similar thing. Of course his work wasn't successful, but If I were him, it would seem nice to be able to see your vision take place. Despite obvious mistakes by the film-makers, It is a fun, intelligent, and visually stunning piece, with a great performance by Helen Hunt. I felt that the only downside was the little love-triangle between Jo, Bill, and Melissa. Sappy and unemotional. Did anyone care for Melissa? Honestly?

Horror Genre's Hope For the Future
12 June 1999
This film's self referential look really took hold, and makes this film, a witty, savy, scary, and stunning film that has ultimately revived the horror genre. The direction is fitting and the acting is perfection. Especially by Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox. While giving plenty of scares, it keep intelligent twists, and some very witty dialogue that was missing from earlier films of the genre. While it gives odes to such films as " Halloween ", and " A Nightmare on Elm Street " it keeps the horror film fans watching, while newcomers to the genre can still have full enjoyment. The film's only downfall, is with its horror genre revival. So comes " Bride of Chucky ", and " Urban Legend ".

Wicked, fun, sexy and hilarious
4 June 1999
Sarah Michelle Gellar does good in all of her work, even Simply Irresistible. She carries the acting. Yet this time, she didn't carry the film alone. It has an ensemble cast, witty dialogue, a creative plot, great acting, good direction, and memorable laughs. It's mature in many senses, and even though you hate some of the characters, you can't help but love them. SMG and Selma Blair bring the most entertainment, yet Reese and Ryan, do masterful performances. It has a terrific ending, and both genders will enjoy it. There are good looking people, good acting, and finally... once and for all... a good romance plot.

Bloodbath gone bad
4 June 1999
Hewitt and Brandy acted well. There were a few surprises, and the ending thrilled me. What was missing? A plot, clever dialogue, and lack of emotion you should be able to have for the characters. I may have cared for Julie, who else, honestly. If I didn't love the first film, I would have said this was all around bad. But since I did, I enjoy seeing Julie and Ray, and trust me, you see plenty of Julie. It's good to see if you're a fan of the first. Just don't expect an original, and intelligent film, like the first was. I suppose if Helen hadn't been killed, this film would have survived, but... It needs the hook. P.S. I Will Always Know What You Did Last Summer, is already planned, and signed on by Brandy and Hewitt. Uugh.
