A very short review of the premiere of "NOS4A2" (2019)
ericrnolan16 June 2019
So I checked out the first episode of AMC's "NOS4A2" last night, after the ubiquitous ads successfully piqued my interest. (I frequently get turned off to shows or movies when they're overexposed by a bombardment of marketing, and resolve not to watch them out of spite. Seriously. But "NOS4A2's" creepy trappings and the promise of Zachary Quinto as a child-abducting vampire were enough to get me to sit down with the first episode.)

This was decent! I'd rate it an 8 out of 10. The writing, directing and acting were all quite good, the protagonist's troubled family drama was a lot more compelling than I expected, and this looks like a horror-fantasy series with some creative stuff going on. I had a little trouble buying the 26-year-old Ashleigh Cummings as a high school student, but she's great in the role. And Quinto chews the scenery just fine as the vampire who apparently feeds off of the life force of the kidnapped children while they sleep. (The character become more interesting when he grows younger - and the talented Quinto then infuses his interpretation with a manic, evil energy.)

The jury is still out with me, however, on this show's horror elements. They're creatively conceived, but they might be a bit too campy and stylized for me. (You know what I mean if you've seen the ads.) "NOS4A2" was adapted from an immensely successful 2013 young adult novel by Joe Hill, and I suspect that the fantasy elements here are exactly what made the book appeal to fans of the YA genre. It remains to be seen whether they'll be too corny for more mainstream fans.

The pilot Was the best episode
Christmas-Reviewer31 July 2019
Review Date 7/31/2019

I have Reviewed OVER 500 "Christmas Films, & Christmas Television Movies , & Television Specials". Please BEWARE Of films and specials with just one review! For instance When "It's a POSITIVE" chances are that the reviewer was involved with the production. "If its Negative" then they may have a grudge against the film for whatever reason. I am fare. I am on a mission to watch every Christmas Movie ever produced. Since 2014 I average 100 per year.

A vampire and his car. The series has its moments but after the first episode it gets worse & worse. This whole season would have been better had they made 1/2 as many episodes.

NOS4A2 follows Victoria "Vic" McQueen, a young working-class artist who discovers that she has a supernatural ability to track the seemingly immortal Charlie Manx. Manx feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland - a twisted Christmas Village of Manx's imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Vic must strive to defeat Manx and rescue his victims - without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.

The cast is okay its the unnecessary plot threads that fail them and the audience. We know what the destination is. They just take the long way.

Feels like Stephen King creepy!
GKoeneke5 June 2019
I've only seen episode 1, but this has a Stephen King feel to it. It might have something to do with the location in Massachusetts. So far, this is pretty good. I like the supernatural feel and storielines. It feels like something you'd watch at night in a dark room.

Warning: Spoilers
The Shorter Way is an interesting mess of a pilot episode. When I separate the book from the series I can find a few different aspects that I enjoy, yet, I'm not hooked. I feel the intro could have been more interesting if the writers followed the book closer. For instance, when the nurse takes a "hot bag of blood to Charlie Manx" he grabs her wrist and threatens her son. Charlie is supposed to be close to death in a coma. It's a great hook and frightening.

Vic was cast well in the series. I don't mind her character being aged up for the show, but her being a bit older does take away from the intrigue set up between her and Charlie in the novel. My main gripe is the tired teenage dialogue between Vic and her peers. I won't go on about it like the show did.

I love the casting of Zachary Quinto as Charlie Manx. I hope the writers really go for it in the coming episodes in regards to his character. Charlie is evil. The series needs to own that if it aims to succeed. In this first episode he failed to come across as scary. From what I saw of Bing I'm more optimistic. It's a weird change to have him working at Vic's high school, but it could be interesting. Vic's parents were portrayed relatively well and I have no qualms in that regard. I'm at a loss for Maggie's character on the screen. I wish the stutter was there, but maybe it'll show up in later episodes. Her friendship with the local officer also comes off as a bit weird and plot driven. The moment she pulls out the scrabble pieces and spells THE BRAT was a highlight.

Overall, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the pilot, but I'm going to go along with it and give AMC's adaptation a fare chance.

Very very hard to watch. Not a viewer magnet as a pilot should be!
housebeast4 June 2019
It's slow pacing made it very easily to get distracted from. This is not good for the casual viewer. Also, imagine not even being a King fan, this was borderline boring with seemingly interesting promises to be developed later on. 6/10 at best, and has a hard work to deliver a satisfactory run if all episodes turn out to be like this.

Creepy but boring introduction
cruise014 June 2019
NOS4A2

1.01 (2.5 out of 5 stars).

The episode pilot may not be the best or strong start of a series. The concept is pretty creepy and scary. With an immortal being played by Zachary Quinto's character that lures children into another dimension called Christmasland. Were every day is Christmas and unhappiness is illegal. The opening intro was dark and creepy. From there on out. Meeting the main character Vic McQueen and her dealing with her mother and father struggling marriage. And her mother trying to shut her future down from going to college. She begins to have visions and can travel through a bridge that was destroyed. It goes on to build her character. It is a very slow moving episode and uninteresting. It is hard to get into the series with this episode. The characters are dull and boring. Nothing really happens to get the story progressing besides a child is missing. And there are people with abilities.

It is just a boring introduction to a good concept series.

The Shorter Way

As far as premiere episodes go, the show did what it needed to do. They hooked me; I found the general concept interesting and when it was over I was left with questions. Mainly with how the bridge worked and what is happening to the children. The characters so far haven't peaked my interest but I'll wait to see how the main characters interact with one another. On the technical side there were some editing hiccups and our female leads knowledge of the bridge doesnt add up. Other than those problems I enjoyed the episode.

I'd go 8/10 on this one.

A poor man's Stephen King
wiseguy2336 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It has that lifeless stretched thin 1990s Stephen King miniseries feel. There are cutaways to a creepy man traveling with a kid, like Storm of the Century, there are vapid cliche ridden conversations with overdone backstories but while that kind of was tolerable in something like The Langoliers, it's dead here because the supernatural mystery is so boring itself. This is an extended King miniseries without the King magic that makes you want to know what the plot is all about despite of all the other drek in it. It's weighed down with filler not interesting character development. It's not interesting to watch a father sing "Here Comes the Sun" for example and it doesn't add much to understanding character motives nor empathizing with them. Everyone is a cliche. The janitor is dumb. The people who are the biggest losers have thick accents, somehow Vic doesn't have her parent's accent. The rich are judgemental and condescending. Teens are angsty cut outs. It's a mess and since the problems are the creative department, it likely will not improve and this is the first and last episode of NOS4A2 I'll be watching

Lackluster start to the series
jaydogva17 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode does not have the same intrigue that the novel had. Once again, we see television producers rushing things along, rather than creating suspense and intrigue. First episode should have been just about Vic and her discovering the bridge. There's enough great content there. I enjoyed that so much when reading the book. In 10 episodes, one should be able to pretty much follow the novel as it is.
