Title says it all!

As someone who is really into space, my favs being Interstellar and The Martian, this is totally unrealistic from what you would expect from the crew. They are supposed to be experienced and work together on whatever mission they are given. Yet here everyone is in their mid 20's and wanting to pick an argument/fight with anyone for close to no reason. Some of the reactions of the crew and scientists on Earth are a bit exaggerated & over the top.

Loads of space "crashes" and "bumps" that felt the same. Really hope they mix it up, already stated to get old, and this is just the first episode.

Space and the settings looked good! No real complaints there yet.

Looking forward to where this goes with the Aliens!

Hoping for season 2
davidbest-474401 September 2019
Just finished the last episode.. overall the story is interesting even tho there are some plot holes and it's a bit weak at times. The last couple of episodes were the best. I hope it gets renewed for season 2 so we can see what happens next.

Across the Universe (2019)

Another Life S:1 E:1

You will notice that we do not refer to any of the characters by name in this review.

The alien ship looks interesting but the design is, like, totally implausible.

To the woman reporter: Honey it is a UFO not a flying saucer.

United States Interstellar Command!

It is impossible to discern the destination of a signal transmitted over a great distance by a directional antenna. Unless, of course, the location of the receiving antenna is also known.

The design of the Salvare is also interesting but implausible.

Why are there sharp pointy things in soma tubes? And isn't there enough air in those tubes?

How does the computer holograph physically react with the star map display?

The computer interface and dialog are interesting.

Why kiss your child's hat?

So: These people on the ship don't even know each other? We get the impression that camaraderie is non-existent. There is no respect for authority, either.

The Salvare just has to make a detour. It's NBD. Lucky there are lots of stars nearby to use and they were able to make all those required billions of calculations.

Awkward?!

Hey! Let's shoot weird random noises at the alien antenna. Just because we can.

With the solar winds from Sirius A pushing the Salvare around the route they were planning to use for their detour needs to be recalculated.

Equipment breaking loose indicates a well designed ship. Yes?

What's a little man hating between crewmates? Right? And honey?

You're not making any friends.

At 0:34:15 -Uh: One Hertz a second is infrasound, idiot.

Gosh darn traitors! Mutiny should be a hanging offense!

Just how do you repair equipment without tools?

Why are there arguments about what's more important: saving the Earth or completing the mission?

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Maybe someone should put up some kind of barrier so nobody else gets hurt?

I would have preferred "Axel F"
samofnine9 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
...for that communicating piece, but we had that already in "Monsters vs. Aliens". And I think this twentysomething crew is just plausible enough for a reflection on how our society today could evolve to. Just look at those examples today! Of course "Nightflyers" comes to mind trying to compare the storyboard, or "Sunshine", but there are some technical issues that don't make much sense, like one second the FTL drive is defect and the next scene, without rany repair, it worked again? This is not a device that could easily be repaired by switching it off and on. But it starts off easier than "Nightflyers", for all we didn't see the end in the first episode! Thank you for that! So let's see what this "Close encounter with the 3rd kind"-version still has on its sleeve...

Terrible
molvich29 July 2019
It is hard to parse just how bad this writing is. A talented enough cast, but what were they thinking? Even ignoring some glaringly stupid basic science mistakes which were needless with this kind of budget.

A crew of pouty, whiny 20 somethings who don't wear uniforms and have zero discipline are sent off to save the Earth. Did competent and sane people go instinct for some reason? Was there some massive planetary extinction event that wiped out everyone of intellect and reason?

I love starship shows. I really do. I love them so much I am going to continue watching this complete trainwreck. I may, however, be rooting for every single person to die terrible and gory deaths.

Given two stars because at least every single character is believably loathsome and stupid so I can only assume is sticking to the script pretty well. The sets are also decent.

Male Female role reversal is over used and ruins the series
machrf24 May 2023
This series has such potential but they try to make it dramatic along with the role reversal of the sexes. Movies that tend to reverse rolls have a deep seated hatred of men and this is no different although they hide it better. The concept of the series so far is interesting enough to keep watching. But you have to realize this is a chic flick. All the main characters are women. The second reason I have started to watch this series is. Katee Sackhoff. She is the strong female type with a bit of femininity in most of her characters. She humanizes her characters so it comes across better.

Let's see how it goes.

Confused why this gets low ratings...
kevin-spencer19 September 2019
Sci-Fi fan of 50 years here, so I've seen a lot of it. It starts off just 'okay' but then steadily improves. Yes, some of the characters are annoying, but then drama formula writing always has a wide range of characters so that is only to be expected nowadays. With so much excellent stuff available on Netflix and other platforms, something has to be good in order to keep me watching. This one did, the first episode was interesting enough to make me come back for another episode. I'm pleased I did because, as I write this, I have two episodes left and can't wait to see them.

Had hoped for more
grlym-468497 November 2021
I love sci-fi. I'm most all it's forms...if done well. Even B rated ones can be fun.

But millennial drama is not for me. It's this kind of recipe that killed stargate universe

The alien akkai are so nebulous in manifestation that it makes the enemy gimmicky. Especially this arm chair psychiatrist approach. And then I'm a cheap way of making it not be a total soap opera...they throw out a bunch of F bombs to make the show seem tough and manly. But really it comes across stupid and I'll timed (if needed at all)

Just seems like the dream episodes that a sci-fi show will do once or twice within 5 seasons. Except, for Thai show....every episode is turning out to be this. Thank heavens Foundation and Dune are out and so I have a real sci fi show to watch.

Concept could have been promising but filled with dumb decisions and stupid characters.
cruise0128 July 2019
Episode 1.01 (2 out of 5 stars).

After a mysterious alien object lands on Earth. A space crew led by Niko (Katee Sackhoff) are sent on a mission to trace the origins of this object. And to find out the purpose of the object.

The plot and concept idea are borrowed from other sci fi space movies. Like Arrival, Annihilation, and Alien. Except this series has dumb characters. The space crew alone are selected to save our planet except they are arrogant and dumb. Niko is already conflicted with one of her crew. Who is trying to challenge her in leadership. Which he risks putting the crew in danger for his own decision. The sub plot with the crew questioning Niko's loyalties is dumb. Meanwhile, her husband (Justin Chatwin) is trying to communicate with this alien object.

The script and direction is terrible. Characters are making stupid decisions, dialogue is dumb, and it is just unbelievable. The pilot episode is also very dull with its direction making it hard to watch the next.

Katee Sackhoff is back in space!
Hillius25 July 2019
As a big fan of 2004's Battlestar Galactica, it is great to see Katee Sackhoff back in space and looking every bit Starbuckian in fit and very fine form. Not a lot of details are given out in the pilot, but I think you get a good idea of the show's promise.

For some unknown reason an alien ship landed on earth and becomes some kind of space antenna. They can't figure out what, but they can figure out where so the powers that be decide to send Sackhoff and her oddball crew to investigate. Expect lots of fairly decent drama built into. Not to spoil any details but things happen along the way not according to plan and then other more dire things happen. The details of space travel are all very nicely rendered here. Again no spoilers. But I do love the ship design and sense of wonderment and mystery that failed so badly in the remake of Lost in Space or the horrible "Star Trek Discovery" disaster.

Over all very good and interesting opening with decent supporting cast in first positions in expected roles, all are new to me. This show does feature a cross-dressing Asian man do if that's a thing. Stop right here. To me, however Hoon Lee's "Job" character in the very excellent Banshee made that show the treasure that it was so maybe it can be duplicated here. We'll see. I expect great things!

Nope, just nope
anna_regenboog25 July 2019
Couldn't continue watching after the first episode. It just wasn't thought through. Just too many questions. An important mission with this team with such unlikeable characters? How? Why? Did who ever send them form a team so incompetent? Did they matched their skills and personalities? Did the team know eachother beforehand? Did they train together before send into oblivion for an important space mission? Truly, I'm amazed at how stupid this is. Nope, not for me.

Space drama that makes no sense
dragon-d-trace30 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A mission to save the earth? Lets send a bunch of undisciplined, untrained, spoiled 20 year olds that behave like teens during puberty. What could go wrong.

This show does not make sense at all. The backbone of this show is supposed to be the crew dynamic and the sci-fi. The crew does not make sense and the science is just completely off. It seams like the writers have heard some science terms in other shows and reused them without even trying to understand them.

Why would you slingshot around a sun if you have FTL? Why haven't you at least read the wikipedia article on gravity assist. Going 3 times around the star for gravity assist is just wrong.

So this sci-fi show gets all the fundamentals wrong.

BAD!!!!!
craven0126 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really really struggle to see the first episode... right now i am 20 minutes into the 1st episode and i try so hard not to stop it but i think i am just a few seconds away from that!!!! Everything does not make any sense!! Who would send a bunch of 20-25 year old spoiled brats to space for such an important mission? What ever happened to proffesional and experienced people back in earth? WHY oh WHY would you lower your speed just so that you try to increase it again with a sling shot with the help of a star and why would you do that sling shot like that by going for no reason so close around the star 3 (!!) times? If your ship can already go with the speed you want then WHY dont you just increase the speed!! You are light years away and you have a fancy "holocall" with your hubby that has 0 latency? REALLY NOW? Thats only for the first 20 minutes on the 1st episode... well i guess i wont wait anymore and stop this torture right now.

Soooo Trope
rusnr9 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot believe how bad this first episode it. Not only is the arguing amongst the characters annoying, but each character seems unable to complete a task without a rambling speech. Each character is a cliche, and unlikable at that. But the final straw was when Katee got back on the bridge and resolved the crisis by effectively telling a crew member to do her job and venting some hydrogen.

Waste of a good idea
M333missa16 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Trite. I don't believe any of the crew knows how to run a ship except for Niko and William. The rest look like they are ready for a fashion show in space, not on a mission to save Earth. How would everyone's hair be perfectly coiffed and dyed, everyone's makeup perfectly done, directly out of stasis? Completely unbelievable. Ellen Ripley they are not.

I don't care about any of the crew (except for Niko and William). Each one are utterly expendable and completely forgettable and unlikable. Not a good first episode.

It felt like they were trying to be hip, rather than telling an honest story. Majority of the characters feel shallow. They lack layers and complexity. And it felt most of the actors were "acting" rather than existing in this world they've been placed in. They're completely predictable and uninteresting.

I made it to "holocall"
jessefelt28 October 2019
Like so many other reviews point out, this is a mission made up of the least qualified people possible purely for the sake of "drama"... I use the quotes there because "who is screwing who" and who is made and who is NOT drama. I mean, it is in the High School sense, but once you grow up and stop spending your days being babysat this kind of crap ceases to be an important or even interesting part of life.

But let's be honest, I wasn't expecting much more from a show that casts Katee Sackhoff. Nothing against her personally, she's a decent actress and has done some good work, but she does seem to gravitate to this kind of sub-sci-fi schlock.

No what broke the straw for me was "holo call". As if everything up to that point wasn't evidence enough that the writers for this are bottom of the barrel, lowest common denominator types. If you have to resort to renaming something to make it sound "sci fi" you don't know what you're doing. There is a reason why the only time you see this done is in low quality garbage and comedies.

Major plot hole issues
elliottjarvis-275526 August 2019
I'm going to be completely fair as this was only episode one. I'm a massive fan of the genre and katee sackhoff brought this to my attention the minute it was announced. The first 10 minutes of the episode felt like a recap of previous episodes where we'd actually seen some story/character development prior to the ship leaving. In reality it was events that basically already happened and we are joining the story a quarter way through. I didn't like that. I'm half way through this series and will say it does get better but I wouldn't hold hopes for season 2. The pilot is pivotal to continued viewership and it seems most people thought the same. It's a shame

The signal
paultapner28 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hour long - almost - first episode of a new Netflix science fiction show. Featuring a lady who has been in a few genre efforts, Katee Sackoff, in her time.

There are familiar elements. An alien craft arrives on Earth and people have to find a way to communicate with it. Arrival will spring to mind.

While her husband does that, and gets pressure for results, our heroine is in command of a space expedition to the source of the signal. Nobody on the ship is entirely professional at times and their emotions take over too easily. Nighflyers will spring to mind.

But this isn't a bad opening at all. Katee Sackoff carries the lead role really well. Although she does start off as professional scientist and mother, a role that feels interestingly mature. But then she turns into tough unarmed combat heroine. But it doesn't entirely forget the mother bit, so hopefully it will remember that balance.

The communication with the aliens bit does work out to have interesting results. And yet it doesn't give away too much too soon, so it intrigues.

And in fighting on the ship leads to a good bit of drama with some good suspense and tensions.

There's enough of the ship crew such that all don't stick in the mind immediately, so hopefully we will get to know them better in due course. And there is one command decision late on that other reviewers, the ones who think they're better writers than tv professionals despite never being published, will take issue with. But things like are there to make you think what you'd do in such a situation. It's called thought provoking.

A decent opening, and enough to keep me watching.

I'm loving it
exffqwzd20 January 2021
I think viewers are too smart for their own good. I've really enjoyed this series thus far. Great actors, and I'm really enjoying Kate Sackhoff's acting performance.

This series has great special effects, crazy space anomalies, high tension, A.I interface, and fun technology concepts,

I came into this series completely blind and I'm really enjoying it so far. If you want to watch a good space SciFi series, this one is flying under the radar.

Waste
damarisbabel18 October 2021
Probably the most unlikeable characters in the history of everything (except Niko and the AI). I'm also not super knowledgeable about space science but i guess it doesn't take much to realise there's a bunch of gaping plotholes. It is however visually a very stunning show and the actors, although i am not familiar with too many of them, are halfway decent. Which makes this a GIANT WASTE of recourses and talent! The writing got it all the way f'd up.
