Monster Hunter (2020)
A great time 😎
Disclaimer: I'm not Monster Hunter player or fan
What a fun movie!
Soundtrack was as welcome surprise - very retro, like Thor: Ragnarok, with a little more synth.
Story moves along at a good clip, yet takes it time to provide a little more depth to the characters.
I love watching Milla on screen and this was no exception. She completely sells the tough as nails warrior woman. She portrays a military officer very well and puts Lara Croft to shame. And those eyes...
The monsters are fierce and so cool to see on screen and the director knows it. There are beautiful shots throughout the movie of monsters and fights with monsters. I also love the weapons and armor.
This movie knows what it is and doesn't take itself too seriously. But it is also more nuanced than your run of the mill monster movie. The kills are brutal and when Milla gets injured, you really feel it - at least the first half of the movie. None of the characters are dumb throw aways and they thread little story elements throughout the movie. Overall, this is just a great, fun movie.
Spirited (2022)
The Christmas Movie you didn't know you needed!
Wow!
This was movie is an instant Christmas classic. How many Christmas musicals are there? Maybe White Christmas.
Will Ferrel did what he does best and he was great throughout. Ryan Reynolds was fine and did a good job with his songs. Each musical was great to listen to, and the choreography was fun and exciting to watch. The movie also did a great with subversion of expectations. Putting a new spin on a well played out story.
My daughter and I were constantly laughing throughout the movie. Don't take it too seriously, just enjoy the ride.
A great take on the greatest Christmas story, "The Christmas Carol". I liked more than Elf. We will be watching this every year. 😄
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Episode 1 Loved it!
I've grown tired of LOTR and the soundtracks. I used to love them, but the music became cumbersome over time. Part of the reason was because of an old LOTR RPG that used the best part over and over.
Once Hobbit came out, I was kind of warm out of this genre. I've actively avoided games and other items related to the IP.
I thought the first episode progresses forward a very tired and stretched IP and breathed life back in.
The acting was excellent. The music was new and refreshing, yet felt grounded in the Tolkien world of Middle Earth. The scenes were amazing! I kept saying 'wow' every time they showed a new place. Watching the hobbits materialized out of no where was cool to watch. Each scene and land felt lived in. I couldn't believe the intro was 17 mins. Some TV series would have ended where this began. The scene between Galadriel and her brother really set her story and helped you understand where her storyline was going. I liked the forbidden elf & human story. Elrond caught me off guard and the actor reminded me of a young Sean Bean. I'm intrigued about the hobbit plot line, and we will see how that story goes. Really enjoyed this episode, looking forward to more.

Foundation (2021)
Best start to a new series, ever?
I've never read Foundation, but I want to. It's on the list of books I want to read. I love sprawling stories with depth and width, this has both in spades.
I feel like I'm in the world of 'Mass Effect', or for those who like 4X board games, a chapter from 'Twilight Imperium', or 'Eclipse'.
There are obvious layers upon layers built into this series, and we, the audience only get to see a few on the surface. There are world layers, political layers, technological layers, world building layers, etc.... I doubt many people will realize that many of the ideas of Foundation came before some of the most beloved Sci-stories such as Star Wars and Star Trek. I'm sure many 'purists' will point out the differences between the book series and TV series, which is a shame. They can't appreciate what is in front of them. I learned a long time ago, movies and TV series are inspired by and adapted from their source material, not replicas or duplicates.
This episode had me the first 5 minutes. The cinematography was beautiful, the word I say used in a different review was 'textures', I think that is a very appropriate word for this episode. There is so much attention to detail. The lighting and shadows, the colors and CGI are all cared for in an intricate and intelligent way. I've seen many movies that were far beneath what this is. As you watch the episode you will have to remained yourself your watching a TV series and not a movie.
The actors nailed it. Jared Harris was captivating every time he was on camera. The lead girl, Lou Llobell did a great job as well. I was never tripped up by the acting. I found myself inthralled with the story and series of events. I really hope the series can deliver on what it has set up. David Goyer, the writer of 'The Dark Knight' trilogy, helped to right this TV series.
The music from Bear McCreary, was what I've come to expect. He is quickly becoming one of my top 5 composers, behind Hans Zimmer and Brian Tyler. Once again he delivered some great songs for this theme.
At the center of the first episode is the power of math. Amoral, unforgiving, unflinching, and and an absolute truth. Math drives the plot, connects the characters, and challenges morale codes and religion.
I'm so invested in these characters already, I want to know more, and I can't wait to learn more about them, how they will react, and what their plans are. I'm not sure how far into the future this story will go, but it will be interesting to keep an eye on.
With 'Dune' just around the corner, we are getting two or the greatest Sci-Fi epics ever written. This was a great first entry, and from all accounts, 'Dune' will continue that trend.
This might be the best opening of a TV series I've ever watched.
Passengers (2016)
Wow - this was great!
I, like everyone else, listened too much to the critics, but the teaser trailers didn't do this movie any favors either.
There is a dark undertone to this movie, but watching the relationship develop between these two was beautiful. The acting is top notch, very believable actions and decisions, and the ending really pays off and sticks the landing. I was invested all the way through. Great visuals, and a haunting soundtrack.
I wish I would have seen this in the theater, it it worthy of a theatrical view - great movie.
Another Life: Hello (2019)
Hmm...
I actually liked episodes 9 and 10 the least. The rave music, the high drama, and series of poor decisions made by all main characters and without command approval.
I really do like the main storyline and I'm anxious to see where it goes, but I would like to see more responsible and reasonable and rational decisions being made. Way too many decisions being reactive and driven by high emotions.
The story is intriguing enough on its on, it doesn't need all the week to week high soap opera. I'm still enjoying the performances, the acting is great.
If they can chisel out what didn't work this season, the next season has the potential to be great.
Another Life: Across the Universe (2019)
I'm loving it
I think viewers are too smart for their own good. I've really enjoyed this series thus far. Great actors, and I'm really enjoying Kate Sackhoff's acting performance.
This series has great special effects, crazy space anomalies, high tension, A.I interface, and fun technology concepts,
I came into this series completely blind and I'm really enjoying it so far. If you want to watch a good space SciFi series, this one is flying under the radar.
