This is another one of my favorite video games of all time, run and guns, and one of my favorite games for the SNES. This truly is a unique type of run and gun as it's the contained area format which is rarely utilized and I hardly seen another since from arcade games like "Cabal" (game I reviewed), "Blood Bros", and "Nam 1975". This game to me is my favorite and I honestly feel the best in this bunch, from both execution and presentation.

One of the things I love is the fact is this is a western game which is cool as there aren't many video games that utilize that genre. However, it's even more than that as it's a sci-fi western which makes it even cooler, as I'm a sci-fi fan and sci-fi westerns/steampunk is something that's rarely touched upon from movies like "Outland", "Cowboys and Aliens" and TV shows like "Firefly", "Galaxy Rangers", "Bravestarr", etc; both sci-fi and the western always make a beautiful and fascinating combination because it always demonstrates you can still do more with genres, just as this game shows the run and gun genre still has plenty of firepower in it.

I really like the world you fight in which is sort of this steampunk like world, it's a cool concept what if all the high technology all happened in the 1800's and not in the present day, it would be a very different and interesting world indeed. But also gives the game a fun feel, sort of like a 90's action film and cartoon, which is fitting as the 90's was still another great decade for the action film genre and Western genre did resurface a little, with films like "Mask of Zorro", "Tombstone" and "Unforgiven". Though sadly there weren't many cartoons doing westerns except the show "Cowboys of Moo Mesa" (show I reviewed) which did have a arcade game that was actually cool and a story for another time.

Really like the designs of enemies you have a colorful variety that each have their sights on you, it consists of a mix of regular human bandits, robots and assault vehicles. Even like the bosses, like one of them from the remastered version is a giant bull robot which sort of reminds me of Stampede from "Bravestarr".

You get to play as one of the two characters a cowboy and cowgirl both with referential names Clint and Annie, it doesn't really matter as each of them play the same. Though in the remastered version of the game you have two other characters to play when you beat the game first time around, one a dog named Bullet that commands a cybernetic drone that flies and shoots, not kidding. Another is a large woman named Doris that throws bombs.

Even like the format of the game, the first level is a straightforward warm up by it's nature but then after you shoot though that, you get your selection of levels just like in "Mega Man". You can play though the levels in any order you want. Each of the levels consist of rounds your in are pretty much shooting galleries, they might be a little tough at first but like any shooting gallery once you get the patterns down you can take out the targets pretty easy.

You have some good functions from the basic fire, jump, roll moves, there is even a stun lasso function and the usual emergency weapon where you can nuke everything on screen. Two of the things I like in the gameplay are I like there are some different weapons to have which each have strengths and weaknesses and limited ammo, from the machine gun which speeds up your discharge rate, the shotgun which is a little slow on the discharge but has power and a wideness in each shot, same goes with the grenade launcher which is like the shotgun but double the power. And another is the laser gun (in the Remastered version) which is cool as it's a very focused weapon that you use like a fire hose in taking out plenty of enemies and in not just taking down certain big enemies but has a good defensive capability in catching some of the shots which is the same with some of the other weapons.

Which gets to the second unique thing about the game there is a risk reward system. Your characters have a brief indicator of incoming bullets, this gives you the opportunity to dodge but also it gives you the opportunity in catching/shooting bullets. You have this gun gauge and every time you hit a bullet you fill the gauge up.

Once it's filled up all the way for a brief period you armed with the Vulcan gun which literally makes you invincible and can destroy everything in sight without breaking a sweat. However, this only lasts for a brief period, and just because you have this indicator and can shoot bullets doesn't mean your unstoppable so pick your shots carefully.

And of course, the music is awesome, this game has some of the best video game tracks in my book which is why each of them are my personal favorites. The music just really give the game just a feeling of nonstop excitement, like you can't afford to take a breath which you really can't. If possible, this would actually make great music if you doing some aerobic exercises.

"Wild Guns" has plenty of ammo for fun."
