Finally Starting to Begin...
TheFearmakers10 September 2023
Not rated highly but actually one of the better episodes so far of this season, granted that there aren't too many, but Season 6 makes all the worst MAD MEN seasons polls, and mostly it's because of Don's boring affair with the married living-upstairs-with-a-doctor Sylvia...

They have dinner at a restaurant this episode and then have... more sex because, their story is they have sex... that's it... she's probably the worst Don-affair ever on the show, and compared to years earlier, the actress (Freaks and Geeks) doesn't look all that beautiful...

What works here is the radio subplot of Jaguar and Don's cheating Mini-Me Pete's trouble that Don will be getting into soon enough with Megan...

The best sequences of MAD MEN, no matter what episode, are the deals, the pitches, all that stuff is so great but with the soap operatic detours, they're left on the backburner, or not burning at all, which is a shame because, what they guys do for a living should be paramount...

But not all guys, as Peggy's story, working now for the weaselly competitor, is thickening the plot-line about possibly turning on her old friends.

The Affairs Of Don And Pete

Warning: Spoilers
A pretty good episode, not one of the best.

A pop culture reference to the Broadway musical "Hair", which had opened in Apr 1968, so this episode must take place around that time. There is some flashback scenes for Don, where he is reminded of seeing hookers through peepholes in the place where he was brought up. Pete's story concerns his having a tryst with a neighbor wife. It ends badly when she is beaten by her husband and Trudy figures out what is going on. Peggy's story involves dealing with her writers, she tries to be tough but she can't quite pull it off, since she still wants to be liked. Don learns from Ken that they have a chance for Heinz ketchup, "the Coca Cola of condiments". Don wants this kept quiet and only Stan is allowed to work on it. My favorite scene is sleazy Herb from Jaguar showing up, Joan gives him a nasty put down. Megan tells Don she suffered a miscarriage.

The final song is Bing Crosby singing "Just A Gigolo".

Warning: Spoilers
Gawd... the first episode in this series that I've fast forwarded through parts. Lookin more like the Young and the Restless now. Three episodes in and this season 6 is the worst EVER. No real conflict or storyline happening, just nonsense hookups and cheating and forced drama. Betty's character is useless and they should have killed her off seasons ago given that her arc now is searching for a violin and getting fat. Peggy's new job is a total yawnfest. All the new secondary characters are boring. Don gives dumb expressions and cheats and looks bored. What happened to Joan's story and her baby? Roger is whatever. Pete is whatever. I'll give this show a few more episodes and if this downfall continues I'll be fast forwarding all the other episodes just to see what happens. Very lazy storytelling.
