The sweet smell of success
kevinolzak1 March 2014
"But the Memory Lingers On" is another well remembered episode, particularly for Shirley Jones, quite a knockout in her brief showgirl costume. Enjoying a family picnic outdoors, hours before a booking at a children's hospital, the Partridges endure a run-in with an unwelcome intruder on the bus- a skunk! At their first stop, the motel manager calls the cops on these masked bandits, but the police are understandably reluctant to 'frisk' the suspects. They do find comfortable lodgings, but quickly clear the elevator on the way up, and even a thorough scrubbing doesn't help, Reuben noting the aroma of "freshly washed skunk!" With the ailing children waiting to catch their favorite group, Reuben hits upon the idea of bathing in tomato juice, and has Danny literally charming the pants off of unwary guests. Perhaps the best line comes from Danny when Tracy mentions that funny smell: "don't look at me!" Good turns from familiar faces like Gino Conforti, Joseph Perry, Howard Morton, and George Spell. This was the episode that introduced their first hit (in truncated form), "I Think I Love You," composed by Tony Romeo, while the main song is "Brand New Me," composed by Wes Farrell and Edward Singleton; interesting that it would showcase not only the debut single but also the first song on the just released first LP, THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY ALBUM.
