The Improbable Dream: Part 2 (#8.2)

Warning: Spoilers
Rebecca hits it off with Robin Colcord and he takes her on a trip in his private jet through the west coast where he gets her a lot of presents. And Sam now wonders if he is caring for Rebecca even though they never slept together. He wants to tell her that he cares but just before he does Robin Colcord comes and tells her the same.

A very entertaining story. Man, Rebecca's entrance after the trip, gorgeous! My favorite part was the interpreting of Sam's crazy dream where Rebecca turns into Alan. And one thing me and Carla have in common is our reaction to Sam's romances with his coworkers. Blech it took me a while to get over that nonsense that was him and Diane, don't do it with Rebecca!

Does Grenadine Stain?

Warning: Spoilers
This is Part II of the Season Premiere, and Robin Colcord has whisked Rebecca away on a romantic capitalist fantasy tour, sending her on spa days and shopping sprees. Roger Rees is brilliant as the millionaire investor, and he gives a completely unique spin to his punchlines with his seemingly-eternal pauses: "I'll fax you....... every day."

Instead of dramatizing and romanticizing the Rebecca/Sam relationship the writers take a much more honest and realistic approach: these aren't star-crossed lovers who were destined for a love affair, but they both still mourn for the relationship that never was. How true.

The bar has become the perfect yuppie clubhouse, maybe a stronger and more enduring image of Cheers than Charles/Burrows/Charles had ever conceived, since the show's creators are no longer patronizing us with phony images of blue-collar slobs enjoying sports and guzzling brew- this is an honest snapshot of the American culture at the time: consumerist professionals looking to hide and numb themselves from society's endless pressures. Frasier and Lilith seem more at home here now than even Norm, as Cheers has truly become a refuge from the cold of the modern world.

In this episode Sam realizes he has Feelings for Rebecca, but he may be too late because, as Robin Colcord says with his trademark pause: "I care for you... very.... very..... deeply."

This is greatness at every level.

Beyond the Pale

What a marvelous episode. Roger Rees who was phenomenal in Nicholas Nickleby on Broadway, plays Robin Colcord. He is a rich investor who has taken a shine to Rebecca. They go jetting around the country. He gives her clothes and expensive gifts. Meanwhile, Sam is having dreams about her and seeking a way to crack through her veneer. There are so many hilarious lines here and some of the most amazing visuals. Early one when Rebecca peels off her face and Al's is underneath. This is such good stuff. The blocking and craziness in Rebecca's office is remarkable.
