The armed robbery in the port may be the work of the two masked men with Icelandic accents who shot heavily injured Birgit Theede's barkeeper nearby a few days earlier. Birgit's ailing pub seems barely worth robbing. Birgit's son Nils Theede, a Hamburg police detective, returns to his native Wismar, eager to show to understaffed local police how it's done in the big city, but finds especially haughty Katrin utterly uncooperative, calling Nils Theede prejudiced. Reuter's team will find him competent and of unexpected future relevance.

Swedish private museum director Hendrik Sjöström has a dark past, and financial troubles, which seem solved as the insurance must pay out when the car is found as a burnt wreck. Ever-elusive 'retired' crook Hansen Hansen is hard to contact, but informative as ever.
