There is no difference between Old and New Doug.
emwryan10 July 2016
To be fair this review should be titled "There is no real or valid difference between Old and New Doug to jump to the conclusion that the older version was superior." But that is way too long of a title.

First, the obvious differences between the shows, just to be fair to those 90's kids with some valid points. Nick's theme song was and will be more catchy, but honestly I'm not watching the show for the theme song. Doug's little sister, Cleopetra Dirtbike Funnie, is a pointless character, and usually baby character in shows are the worst. People complain about the redesign of characters...honestly it's not as drastic as people like to make it out to be, the only exception being Patti, but honestly I like her redesign. Maybe it was me, but I always thought Patti's hair from the Nick series looked like a yellow blob compared to Disney's which actually looks like hair. The Beets breaking up...honestly, I don't care for them, but If others liked the songs than who am I to judge. The Honker Burger not being there...It's a location guys...are we really steeping that low just to find complaints? As for the Disney episodes being 30 min compared to 10, that is definitely better.

Honestly, the heart of the show is still the same in both. The "Lack of spirit" argument is kind of bogus. Really I think 90's kids complain about the two because it isn't the exact same...honestly, overlook those small differences, it's like the show never got rebooted but simply had another season.

I Living Proof that you really can like both shows...
Gladtobesaved61 November 2004
The lead comment was that this show was a low point for ABC. I didn't see it that way back in September of 1996. We'd lost cable 8 months earlier and I was really missing the Nick version of "Doug". I was more the extatic to find out they were bring the show to a channel I still got. Then I saw the Trailer, and yes the show's plot, theme song, and everything else about it get turned upside-down. I maintain however the basic theme of the show was still the same. Doug still lived in Bluffington and still wrote in his Journal. That's all I needed to know.

This show depends a lot on seeing the Nick series but before long really becomes its own force as we are introduced to life at a Junior High-School that is under-construction. My favorite episode was the one where they were trapped in the school by a blizzard, and one of the kids goes off to find a secret paradise room, hidden in the Principal's Office. I've yet to find other shows that come close to story lines like that. The theme of my life for a long, long time. In fact, to this day, in my ENG classes at TCC I still will write my Narrative Stories in the "Doug" format of normal life adventures gone wrong. It works!

It's actually awesome.

So many people dog the Disney incarnation of Doug. I can understand that in principle, but most of them probably never gave it a chance. The Nickelodeon incarnation will always be number one with me, don't get me wrong. But the Disney incarnation added quite a bit to the show. For one thing, the animation was excellent. Oft- mentioned Skunky Beaumont was finally given a face. While the show shifted from elementary to middle school, we have a school principal who was actually seen. I've also seen people criticizing that Roger is nicer than he originally was, but that's just because people grow up and change. The point I'm trying to make, is that this incarnation is awesome. Keep an open mind.

It's not the same as it was from Nickeleon.
emasterslake9 June 2007
This cartoon is a continuation from the fan favorite Doug from the 90s. Only difference is it's produced by Disney and not Nick.

Takes place a year after the events in the first series. Where Doug and his friends enter Junior High. With a load of changes that give Bluffington a total twist. We see some familiar faces along with Doug, as well as some new ones. Not to mention the usual lifestyle, problems, and activities involved in each episode like the in the previous series.

Designed, and animated by the same company: Jumbo. Voiced by the same actors except for Billy West who didn't want to be part of it. Same multi color characters. But it all feels entirely different from the cartoon I knew from the early 90s.

A lot of other fans don't compare this to being equal to the original. Which I agree too, as the Disney Doug contains no charm or brilliants what-so-ever. most of the episodes are good to watch, but like 3/4's of them are very uninteresting, out of character, misleading, poorly written, as well as unoriginal.

You might ask why in the word a great cartoon like Doug could receive a less-worthy sequel. For me it could either be A. There's no Honker Burger(which was bought out in this series under the name of the cheesy French restaurant), B. Doug involved in rather stupid situations than before, C. Adding Dirtbike as the new member of the Funny family rather pointless, or D. Having the whole series under the name of Disney.

Whatever the real reason is, Disney's Doug fails to be a fan favorite for most of the other Doug fans. I'm perfectly fine watching the original countless times as I find that one more appealing than this. If you hate this second series, then stay away from the movie. See my review on that one for more detail.

Brand Spanking New! Doug The Complete Series
laurahandziuk-2810712 December 2021
When this series first came on TV, I got so excited, I was happy to see a brand new episode and a new series of Doug to come back to the set. This show was very entertaining. I found this show on Disney Plus and I was happy to see the series again. This show was very entertaining.

Yet another disappointing revival of a classic cartoon
dobbsosaiah26 June 2020
This show reminds me so much of another revival of a Nickelodeon series, Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon. Both Doug and The Ren and Stimpy Show started out as Nicktoons, and after cancellation, both were given a second life by different cable networks. Fans of Doug and Ren and Stimpy alike were excited for the upcoming revivals of their favorite Nicktoons, and the creators of Doug and Ren and Stimpy (Jim Jinkins and John Kricfalusi respectively) had a lot of new stories to tell. Unfortunately, I, along with several others, found both to be a disappointment. Both had very unnecessary changes to the characters, such as their personalities which were either extremely flanderized or completely changed. That my be my biggest complaint. Also, Billy West did the voices for Doug and Roger in the original, and he did the voice of Ren (for seasons 3-5) and Stimpy. He does not return for the revivals which is quite disappointing. Doug and Roger are voiced by Tom McHugh and Chris Phillips, while John K reprises his role as Ren from the first two seasons, and Stimpy is voiced by Eric Bauza. I think both were kind of gong for the premise of the characters being sort of "grown up" now, since Doug is about one year older than he originally was and is now in high school and Adult Party Cartoon is now airing in "the first network for men" and is intended for adult audiences only, but it just didn't work out really.

Disney makes Doug go bad like spoiled milk
dootuss9 October 2001
Brand Spanking New Doug is just plain stupid, and i hate it how disney just got their grubby hands on the great Nicktoon Doug, and mangled it into a lousy, horrible excuse of saturday morning television! I mean let's face it: Some of the things that were there on "Doug" (like the honker burger) cease to be on the old show. Roger's rich, i mean what's up with that? He's trailer trash on the original(and more better) show, but then, he's a snob on the disgrace show! Let's face it: Nick should have renewed it WAY befor Disney took it off their hands. And besides, Nick would have made it better! Well, maybe a little better. But way better than what disney whipped up! But the bottom line is that disney proved with this show that you can sink much lower to the brimey deep with a cartoon like this, and that is a fact jack!

The best show!
doug_funnie2 September 2000
I saw this show as Doug on Nick, 9 years ago! From then I have LOVED this show! The characters are so cool and funny. The episodes make me laugh and I love them. The writing is great and the adventures that Doug has are great too! The movie that follows after the show is just what Doug fans are asking for. This series is fantastic.

Wanted to Like it When it Came out...but Disney Ruined it
Polonius8529 July 2009
To this day, I don't see why Disney felt the need to completely gut everything about Nickelodeon's first Nicktoon. I understand, they feel that they can do anything better than anyone else...but in this case they were very wrong.

First, there were so many things that were unnecessary. Why did they have to break the Beets up? Everyone loved them! Hell, I still have some of their songs on my iPhone! Second, why did they close the Honker Burger? Those two things just showed that the new writers felt intimidated and were so desperate to do the show better rather than even just trying to do it justice. It failed on both accounts.

The story lines were 30 minutes, which I did like (I would have liked longer than 10 minute episodes in the original series). However, they became increasingly bizarre and unrealistic with each passing episode. One of the charming things about the original series was that, aside from some cartoon slapstick comedy, Doug was not at all unrealistic. Disney decided to put the show on acid and leave the viewers scratching their heads at the end of each episode, asking, "What was that all about?" This version of Doug jumped the shark the moment it began. It could have just stuck to the original format with some chronological updates and allowed the show to evolve a bit, but instead Disney ripped it up by the roots to begin with, leaving a show that was only slightly connected with the original series.

A Good Sequel
Ginger873 August 2004
When I first heard about a new series of "Doug" I was thrilled since I loved "Old Doug". After I saw the first episode I thought it was really good. It wasn't as good as the NICK series but it was still pretty good. I liked the 12 1/2 year old Doug (he got cuter) and Doug being in middle school. I didn't have a problem with this new series tho many people said it wasn't very good and that Disney destroyed it. I liked the fact that Doug got older and more mature since I and many other viewers also got older and more mature.

My favorite "New Doug" episodes are "Doug's Dream House" and "Doug on the Road". They're both really funny and entertaining.

I wish this series wasn't canceled since I really loved it. But maybe one day they will make a new "Doug" series about him in High School. I give "New Doug" 10/10 stars.

Quality of ABC Saturday morning tv sunk to an all new low
Op_Prime19 April 2000
I remember a time when ABC had an amazing line up of Saturday morning cartoons, including Reboot and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was sadly canned because of low ratings but with Reboot's cancellation was because Disney did not want a program they did not make on the Saturday morning line up. And in their place, what shows do we get? Besides the idiotic and senseless Pepper Ann, we get this load of garbage. Doug was once a NICK toon and in my opinion one of the better NICK toons. That previous show was fine, but this show is just plain horrible. It is brain dead and is a fine example of why Disney original programming is laughed at on a regular basis. The glory days of ABC Saturday morning cartoons ended with the premiere of this Doug cartoon.

A step down from the original cartoon, but is still watchable
dee.reid28 March 2002
When I first heard that a new "Doug" was going to be aired on T.V., I knew that I would be in for trouble. What made the situation even worse, is that Disney is now running things. So much for good old Doug, I thought. I tried to put off watching this show for as long as could, but I found the temptation to finally view it in its entirety. To my surprise, it is definitely not as stupid as I thought it would be. Sure, some of the voices are different, but I'm not holding that against it. The setting is different too, now that Doug is in middle school. They are now going through many of the things teenagers go through too. It seems that Doug's interest in Patty Mayonnaise has been amplified x10, Skeeter is acting normal, Roger is no longer the jerk he used to be, Chalky has become too much of a jock, and Beebe is turning into a real snob. But of course, they've aged since the show was in its prime so one could expect some change.

The biggest problem "Brand Spanking New! Doug" suffers from is that it's just gotten too kiddish. People who liked the original "Doug" cartoons may be disappointed if they watch this show because it just may no longer be suited for them.

All in all, I given "Brand Spanking New! Doug" a 2 1/2 out of 5.

Great!
shadowmario25 October 2002
I started watching this show about a year ago when it started on ToonDisney, and I love it! Though, when I go back and look at the old Doug (which I didnt watch until very recently) I dont like it, and never have. Perhaps if I had started watching the original Doug when it came on, I might like it and hate this, who knows. Im glad that they changed the title to "Disneys Doug" when Disney carried it over, though, "Brand Spanking New Doug" is a terrible title. I give it 7 out of 10.

It's not that bad
stu-2220 May 2000
Sure, there might not be a whole lot to say about this show, but it's had a good run for almost 7 years. The reason I like this show is because it doesn't have to do with kids trying to save the world with their crazy pocket monsters or seeing how far an animated show can go.

Doug deals with problems that a lot of kids face, some that will last a lifetime or some that are just part of a phase. I've been watching this show ever since I was 6 years old, and I was saddened after watching the last episode last year. It really showed how Doug grew up over the years, instead of keeping him in 5th grade the whole time. That's how childhood is, and that's why this show really appealed to me over the years.

If Walt was still alive, and he saw this show. He'd throw the remote control at the t.v!
Fonzie-28 July 1999
"Doug" started out on Nickeloden as one of their "Nicktoons" in the early 1990's. It was a modest kids show, and got modest ratings. Now I found it funny back then. Now comes in Disney. They take the rights to the show, and some how make it suck. I do not care if they made it into a movie. It probaly sucked too.
