Sally Field was the big guest on Monday's episode of The Howard Stern Show, where the two-time Oscar winner offered up candid insights on her 50-plus years in showbusiness. From Smokey and the Bandit to Spider-Man to The Flying Nun, Field was game for the grilling. Here are five major highlights from today's chat. 1. She's not a big fan of her role in the divisive Amazing Spider-Man movies. While Field enjoyed one of the biggest box-office hits of her career with the first Amazing Spider-Man, she did the film not out of love for the material but to work with late producer and friend Laura Ziskin one last time (Ziskin died of breast cancer before the movie was released). Howard: "You didn't like that movie?" Field: "Not especially. It's not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film,...

Distributors throughout the Mena region face a spectacular range of challenges, including a lack of screens, curfews and soaring piracy. Melanie Goodfellow profiles the major players.
The recent period of rapid political and economic change across Mena has resulted in wildly different theatrical fortunes from territory to territory.
Saudi Arabia continues to ban movie theatres but neighbouring UAE and Qatar are witnessing a huge increase in screen numbers and multiplexes and a resulting growth in box office, which is spilling over into Jordan and Iraq.

Back Roads & Frontal Lobes reminded me a lot of a collection I read many years back, and I was reminded of that other book because of its utter uniqueness. Like the author of that book, there is no one else writing quite like Brady Allen. His stories are amalgamations of the classic weird tale, each containing something archetypal of the genre but each equally new. His is a voice you won’t find anywhere else, and that’s something truly special. His stories brim with originality and a sense of place as strong as anyone in the genre, including the author of that collection I was reminded of while reading Back Roads & Frontal Lobes.
The places and people in this collection are palpably real, as if Brady scooped them straight out of Southern Ohio and put them on paper. The people are fully realized and so much a part of...

Is this the glimmer of hope we’ve been waiting for? Because neither Robert Pattinson nor Kristen Stewart ever said anything about breaking up in the aftermath of that Rupert Sander mess, many fans — our own Kate Spencer included — were crossing their fingers and toes that these kids two would work things out. Kristen’s ambiguous “We’re totally fine” statement at Toronto was the first indication that all was not as dire as some suspected. Now we’re hearing reports from two outlets that the Twilight supercouple have been meeting in secret.
A source told People that they met in Los Angeles last weekend and that Rob’s friends “think they’ll be a couple again.” He reportedly has discovered that moving on is “clearly harder than expected.” And two separate sources also told E! Online that Rob and Kristen have been talking and have met in two different locations.

Andrew Davis Returns To Stony Island
By Alex Simon
Director Andrew Davis made his name with hard-hitting action blockbusters like The Fugitive, Under Siege and The Guardian, but like most filmmakers, his first effort was a small film with a modest budget and a lot of heart. Davis’ directing debut Stony Island was shot in 1977, helmed by the then 30 year-old who had made a name for himself as a cinematographer, and conceived as a love letter to the South Chicago neighborhood where he grew up. Based loosely on the story of Davis’ younger brother Richie (starring as a fictionalized version of himself), who grew up as one of the few white kids in a largely African-American neighborhood, Stony Island follows a group of young musicians who try to form an R&B group in their racially-mixed neighborhood. Featuring the film debuts of now-notable names such as Dennis Franz, Susanna Hoffs,...

National Donut Day got some tweeters excited about hunting down free fried dough today. Edgar Wright snapped a pick of one of the country's most famous shops in Portland, while Vito Del Sante sounded mighty pessimistic about his prospects for finding any freebees in his neighborhood.

Casting news has been through the roof over the past few days, so I'm going to do my best to present you with the most noteworthy stories without (hopefully) overwhelming you with names and titles.
This first bit comes from Heat Vision, which has the news that Stanley Tucci will play the villain Jack the Giant Killer, while director Bryan Singer continues the search for his lead. The film is said to be a more "adult" take on the Jack and the Beanstalk tale, which follows a young farmer leading an expedition to rescue a kidnapped princess. Tucci will play an advisor to the king with designs on usurping power. Bill Nighy and John Kassir will make up Fallon, the two-headed leader of the giants. Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man, About a Boy) is reportedly one of the front-runners for the titular hero.

Oh man, I totally remember Tawni O'Dell's book, Back Roads. It was selected for Oprah's Book Club in 2000. My mom read it with her book club when I was in high school. I took a gander at the inside flap, deemed it "too mommish" for my liking and went back to listening to Limp Bizkit on my Discman. How wrong I was! It actually sounds like an extended Law & Order: Svu.

One of our favorite actors right now is Andrew Garfield, who sadly didn't receive an Oscar nom when he should have (for The Social Network), but is playing Peter frickin' Parker anyway, so it really doesn't matter. Variety reports that Garfield has been cast in an adaptation of Tawni O'Dell's bestselling novel Back Roads that Infinity Media is developing. Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Jacob's Ladder, Unfaithful) is directing from a script she co-wrote with O'Dell. Beyond just Garfield, this Pennsylvania-set murder mystery will also star Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden. Quite a cast they've got for this. Shooting starts in June. Andrew Garfield will star with Jennifer Garner in 'Back Roads'. The 27-year-old actor will take the lead role in the film adaptation of Tawni O'Dell's bestselling novel as a young man who is forced to care for his three younger sisters after their mother is jailed for killing her abusive husband. Jennifer, 38, will play a family neighbour who becomes romantically involved with the 'Spiderman' star's character. Television and film actress Marcia Gay Harden is also involved in the project and is set to play a court-appointed therapist. Adrian Lyne will direct the Pennsylvania-set murder mystery from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tawni, with 'Capote' producer Michael Ohoven, Dan Spilo and Kevin Turen also working on the film. Andrew - who also stars in 'The Social Network' and 'Never Let Me Go' - said last month that he hopes he will always be "struggling" for roles, so he is always learning.

The new actor playing Spider-Man is lining up his first post-superhero job. Andrew Garfield is now attached to star with Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden in Back Roads, a drama for Infinity Media. The movie is being directed by Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction) and is based on a novel by Tawni O'Dell that was featured on Oprah's Book Club a decade ago.
Garfield would play the son of a mother who has been convicted of murdering her abusive husband. The son must now play the part of guardian for his three younger sisters.
Garner would play a neighbor who starts a relationship with the son in the aftermath of the domestic violence. Harden would play the therapist that's trying to heal the young man's emotional damage.
What may be most interesting about Back Roads is that it will be the first film that Adrian Lyne has directed since 2002's Unfaithful.

When Andrew Garfield was announced as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man last July, hardly anyone knew who he was. The pair co-wrote the screenplay about a young man forced to raise his three sisters after their mother is sent to jail for killing their abusive father. Read more after the jump. According to Variety [2], who broke the story, the Infinity Media production is tentatively scheduled to start filming in June. Andrew Garfield is making sure that there’s life after Peter Parker.
Did we say life? We meant murder, as Garfield has signed on to play the male lead in “Back Roads,” a Pennsylvania-set murder mystery, according to Variety.
Garfield will be playing a young man who’s forced to take care of his three younger sisters after his mother is sent to prison for murdering her abusive husband.
“Back Roads” is set to be directed by Adrian Lyne, who knows a thing or two about the dark side of the human condition, having directed “Fatal Attraction,” “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Lolita.” The film is based on the bestselling novel (and former Oprah’s Book Club selection) by Tawni O’Dell, who co-wrote the screenplay with Lyne.
Andrew Garfield’s co-stars include Jennifer Garner as the cradle-robbing neighbor with whom he becomes romantically involved and Marcia Gay Harden as his court-appointed therapist.

Lead roles have been cast in Adrian Lyne's adaptation of Tawni O'Dell's "Back Roads," a novel about a young man in rural Pennsylvania trying to care for his three younger sisters after his mother goes to jail. Andrew Garfield is attached to play the lead role of Harley with Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden in supporting roles. Garner will play a neighbor and love interest for Garfield, with Harden taking on the role of court-appointed therapist to Garfield. He might be spending his time swinging around in glorified pyjamas as Spider-Man, but it would seem Andrew Garfield is considering something a little more low-key for a future role, as he’s attached to co-star in Adrian Lyne’s Back Roads.Adapted from Tawni O’Dell’s bestselling novel by Lyne and the author herself, the story follows a young man who finds himself as the main caregiver for his three younger sisters when their mother is locked in prison for killing her abusive husband. So while it won’t feature a lot of Garfield taking on villains, it does promise the sort of damaged character he brings to life so well (see: Never Let Me Go and The Social Network).Jennifer Garner is also on board, set to play a woman Garfield falls for (lucky dog!) and Marcia Gay Harden will crop up as his court-appointed therapist.With...

Infinity Media has announced to Variety its plans to adapt Tawni O'Dell's bestseller Back Roads and has hired Adrian Lyne ( Lolita , Jacob's Ladder ) to direct the film version with a cast that includes Andrew Garfield ( The Social Network , Spider-Man ), Jennifer Garner ( 13 Going on 30 , Elektra ) and Marcia Gay Harden ( The Mist , Into the Wild ). The 2000 novel made Oprah Winfrey's Book Club selection and is described by Penguin as follows: Harley Altmyer should be in college drinking Rolling Rock and chasing girls. He should be freed from his closed-minded, stricken coal town, with its lack of jobs and no sense of humor. Instead, he's constantly reminded of just how messed up his life is. With his mother in jail for killing his abusive father, Harley is an...

This week's snow may have stopped traffic along Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, but it can't stop tweets about who Joseph Gordon-Levitt might play in "The Dark Knight Rises." Brandon Jerwa shared some fine theories last night as the country was getting buried and frozen, and he was probably a bit more on target than Mark Millar was with his thoughts on Egypt.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Alan Moore could not have cared less about the "Green Lantern" and "Cowboys and Aliens" trailers that premiered in time for his birthday this week, but a handful of creators in our feed cared enough about him to celebrate his birthday with posts. Gene Ha summed up the day's significance nicely.
As for Jon Favreau's new movie, the first clips to show up in public got a warm welcome broadly. There are some skeptics, though, and Kevin Colden was among them. Check out whose side you're on and photographic evidence of what could happen to you if you try drawing "Ant-Man and the Wasp" near Mike Norton.

@GeneHa On this day in 1957, a child was born to us in Northampton. Failing at LSD dealing & cartoons, Mr Moore wrote comic books.

Monday mornings in the Twitter Report feed aren't going to be the same now that "Mad Men" Season 4 has concluded. Last night's finale received mixed reactions from Gene Ha, Jon Favreau and Steve Lieber, but AMC's definitely planted the seeds of anticipation for "The Walking Dead" among them.

We already knew that there were Yankee fans in the comics community, thanks to the Twitter Report feed, and they showed up along with some non-Yankees supporters today to mourn the lost of the team's owner George Steinbrenner. I have a feeling that a few of them were more familiar with Steinbrenner on "Seinfeld" than they were with his real-life business endeavors.
Elsewhere, if you follow any faces at all in comics on Twitter, you've probably seen the #movieswithbatman tag showing all over the place. I've included Gene Ha and Warren Ellis' submissions below, along with critical comparison of early "Avengers" comics to "Jersey Shore" and Fred Van Lente's feelings about "Entourage."
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for July 13, 2010.
George Steinbrenner pt. 1: @ronmarz I'm no Yankee fan, but I admire their success and way of doing business. They are what they are today because of George Steinbrenner.

No news is bad news, a smidgen or minor mention is great news. It's with this small blurb about Academy Award-winning writer, director, and producer, Bobby Moresco changing agents, we find out that he is currently penning a studio project for Universal picture called Humbris - Humbris is another word for arrogance, which is not a label I would employ for the director who is attached to direct the film. - No news is bad news, a smidgen or minor mention is great news. Both "Shutter Island" the movie by Martin Scorsese and "Shutter Island" the novel by Dennis Lehane got some positive micro-reviews in today's Twitter Report, and the opinions came from comics names I trust, too — namely Jhonen Vasquez and Kazu Kibuishi. I tried to find something from someone who'd read "Shutter Island" the graphic novel, but the trifecta went uncompleted.

The "Spider-Man" movie's team members weren't the only ones on Brian Michael Bendis' meetings schedule this week. It looks like things are moving forward with his "Fire" adaptation at Universal as well.
Meanwhile, DC Comics tweeting was lively yesterday in the wake of the news that Jim Lee and Geoff Johns' new role announcements there. Erik Larsen was fascinated by the facial hair changes that coincided with DC's reorganization, and Johns thinks they may have topped Tiger Woods in terms of coolness. Check out those retweets after the jump, as well as how Nathan Fillion thinks his ship from "Serenity" would fare against the Enterprise.

Twitter was ground zero on the Internet yesterday for reactions to the Apple iPad, which has dominated tweets in my feed for most of the last few days. It was also home to Brian Michael Bendis' first reaction to Zac Efron joining the film adaptation of his graphic novel "Fire."

Jill Thompson, who was become one of my favorite sources for Twitter-posted artwork, showed of a "Sandman" piece she did as a "warm up," and Neil Gaiman shared a pic of he looks like in his winter gear.
