This show started off as another semi-funny Lorne Michaels show.
Then the next 2 seasons became an exercise in writing the most hatable people on television.
Add in the reports about the show ending because the creators were insufferable and abusive, and it all makes sense.
The show ends up being a caricature of the entertainment industry but is an obvious study of self-hate from what I believe to be the perspective of the creators.
My suggestion is to do yourself a favor and skip this show, it's filled to the brim with callback jokes that fall kinda flat and it's pretty clear they want to follow the formula that worked for actual funny shows like 30 Rock.
