A little dated but with some funny moments
5 April 2023
Some 60 years on from its release there's no doubt that this film in parts now feels very outdated and it seems to have a cast of the oldest college students in history, but at its core this is a great comic performance from Jerry Lewis, not so much in the role of the Prof but more in the role of his alter ego, the super confident Buddy Love. That performance is so good that at times it's difficult to believe that it's the same actor playing both roles and there are some laugh out loud moments when Buddy is on the prowl. I also like the fact that all our sympathy is directed to the bumbling Prof. The other reason that the film fundamentally still delivers is that Stella Stevens is excellent as the Professor's love interest who whilst drawn to Buddy still delivers some excellent put downs when his ego expands to unbearable levels. Del Moore also puts in a fine performance as the exasperated and pompous Dr. Mortimer Warfield.
