Review of Arizona

Arizona (2018)
5/10
Had a lot going for it, but the direction it went was too far off the rails for me.

For me this was a bit too light on the comedy for a dark comedy. It gets dark and stays dark for a good portion of the film. Just one character is "funny" but is more psychotic than amusing. There are some gags and a few laughs. And what bothered me most was the constant use of moody music, so there was no way to lighten the mood, it was mostly tension filled scenes with not much letup to it. Toward the end I just wanted the thing to be over with and the ending was just unsatisfying. One thing it does have is a really good production value and performances from the actors were pretty good for the most part. After seeing David Alan Grier I was pleasantly surprised but he was wasted in this movie, they gave him nothing to play with and his part could have been done by anyone. Danny McBride I've liked in a few things and in this he was just all over the place, if they kept him as an ordinary guy who just kept accidentally killing people it would have been better and even funny. But instead his character became more and more cartoonish and unbelievable and it really stuck out like a sore thumb. Overall It was just way to imbalanced for my liking.
