Irma la Douce (1963)

Delightful!

If you are Wilder fan like I am, then there is a good deal of chance that this film didn't charm you up just as much as his other classics, especially Some Like It Hot (1959) and The Apartment (1960), arguably the peak of Wilder's filmmaking skillset.

Nevertheless, it carries the Wilder essence. Witty character comebacks, eye-catching set pieces, wonderful use of colors, and of course the deeper message, that all Wilder films carry.

The film captures the landscape of Paris in the 60's really well, almost as if the city is a character in itself.

The film feels unnecessarily long at some points, but you may be willing to let that trouble pass when you experience the marvellous and nuanced performance by Jack Lemmon, the graceful Irma La Douce (Shirley Maclaine) herself.
