Double Lives (2018)
7/10
Both serious and funny

The novelist Leonard Spiegel has his last manuscript rejected by his friend and publisher Alain Danielson, his friend and usual publisher Very disturbed, he opens up to his wife Valerie, a parliamentary assistant, who takes the thing lightly. Alain, as for him, is married to Selena, who stars in a successful TV series. Their union is not without clouds. The relationship between the two couples, very intertwined, is becoming increasingly complicated.

Five characters exchanging considerations on today's world and more particularly on the world of publishing and its necessary mutation, one fears an intellectual film, which will only interest a happy few. Fortunately, it's nothing of the sort. The characters do not deal with the serious topics broached in an austere Way. Quite the opposite indeed, For Olivier Assayas has, quite rightly, opted for the register of comedy, sometimes close to boulevard theater. Both serious and funny, his witty dialogues allow the viewer to think over in an always pleasant way, especially since they are conveyed by excellent interpreters, who know how to highlight the flaws of the characters they play- and God knows they have many ! This film is also a showcase for the impertinent and grumpy Nora Hamzaoui, hitherto known for her sketches and comedy shows. In " Doubles vies ", she literally steals the show.
