Cute but Cringe

Warning: Spoilers
I watch both Father of the Bride movies multiple times a month. They're some of my favorites, and I've been hoping for a third part for years. I knew this special wouldn't be the caliber of a real movie, but I was excited about it.

Unfortunately I found it fairly derivative and forced. There were a lot of awkward references to the movies that were designed to be nostalgic for the viewer, but come off unnaturally when dropped in conversation. Kieran Culkin in particular was very awkward and seemed to be trying too hard. He came off as fake and way too "actor-y."

It really didn't work to have George and Nina separated in the house. It had to be done due to the nature of the filming but it made no sense to have them zooming from two computers in the same house, especially if this is their son getting married.

I also thought it was really strange to have Matty and his fiancée get married over Zoom, which I don't think is even legal. And the fact that Annie and Brian never had another child seems out of character. They had no problem dropping in a random woman and her father and expecting us to immediately care about them, so they could have given them another kid or two.

I liked the grown up babies more than I thought I would. Somehow they felt the most natural even though they were new to the cast. It was nice seeing the Banks family again, and I enjoyed the little bit of warmth I got from the nostalgia rush, but hopefully there will be a real movie someday that isn't so gimmicky.
