Moolaadé (2003)
8/10
A compelling drama
28 June 2020
"Moolade" is a colorful, engaging, and compelling drama on the barbaric tradition of female genital mutilation, still persisting in few African countries. The film very well depicts the African milieu with a well realized setting and an engaging tale of a woman seeking refuge to four girls from being circumcised. Aside opposing the atrocities of a patriarchal society with an outrageous tradition at times costing many lives, the film is strong enough to oppose the tradition and throw it. Perhaps, it's among the rare movies that get deep into the skin and represent the social atrocities that still persist and needs to be condemned and abolished, which the film fiercely tries to do with its realistic setting and tremendous performances.
