A big surprise
25 April 2016
When "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"'s first season was released on Netflix last March I didn't really give much about it - the description about a woman being saved from a bunker and spontaneously deciding to lead a life in New York sounded a bit too cheesy for my taste. A few days after the release, I clicked on the pilot episode simply out of boredom... well, I found myself laughing for the following two hours as I started binging this amazing show. Tina Fey (30 Rock) created one of the decade's greatest comedy series by making every episode seem like a 30-minute fairy tale stuffed with bright colors and insane characters all along the way. The dialogues are so beautifully crafted you'd have to think the writers did nothing but perfecting "Kimmy Schmidt" scripts the last ten years: The lines shine with surreal humor, lots of jokes about habits of modern society (e.g. creating a phone notification via the voice recorder which leads Kimmy onto a porn site) and great life teachings.

This series can really uplift its viewers after a hard day and this year's second season just came in time when I really didn't have the best of times and just needed some relaxation in the hilarious, surreal jungle called "21st Century New York" :)

But it'd only be half the fun without the outstanding cast: Ellie Kemper stars as Kimmy Schmidt and she really knows how to enchant her fans and to put a smile on the viewer's face after delivering another one of her great lines. Tituss Burgess plays the homosexual co- habitant of Kimmy's, Titus Andromedon who's always dressing in a very eccentric way. Then there's Carol Kane as the somewhat psychotic landlady Lilian, Jane Krakowski as the stereotypical trophy wife Jacqueline... the list goes on.

"The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is a series I can highly recommend to everyone who simply wants to relax and feel better as well as to fans of cleverly-used stylistic devices and some of the best culture references ever brought to the screen.
