A very cute movie that stands on artistic merit

Warning: Spoilers
As someone who is not an "artist" in the traditional sense, I am quite certain that Shaun The Sheep is mind blowing as far as animation goes. The painstaking process and just how conceptually unique the film is should not go unnoticed. I know a lot of people love the Wallace and Gromit series and similar animated shows and films and I can understand why. They are very smart, fun, sweet, a terrific message and beautifully created. However, that doesn't necessarily make for a perfectly entertaining experience. I have never Shaun The Sheep before and I knew nothing about it. It will however, forever hold a place in my heart as it is the first movie I took my daughter to. She is only four months and we went to a "Stars and Strollers" showing of the movie. I had no expectations, I went for the experience. I chuckled, I said "awww" at the emotional bits and I enjoyed it a lot. I had no idea that it was practically a silent film. That didn't affect my opinion of the movie at all. They tell the story extremely well, you know exactly what is happening and actually they deserve kudos for it never being boring. I'm not sure a film like this can handle a feature length movie. I just felt like it went on a tad too long and the run time is quite short. I am certain the TV Series of Shaun The Sheep is far more intriguing in small doses.

I can't speak to the cast because no one says anything. I was a little perplexed as to how diverse the cast listing is on IMDb. Anyone can make these grunting, animal noises or the little sound effects that the characters do and they do a great job but it isn't dependent on the actor themselves (in my opinion.) The credit for this movie belongs in the hands of the creators. It takes serious talent to not only pull off this animation but to tell a story in this fashion. It is quite an adventure...a modern day fairy tale with plenty of twists and turns and such an incredibly sweet message about home and being appreciative of your life. The grass is not always greener is the best way to put it.

There was quite a few young kids in the theatre and parents and I heard both laughing at various times. There was a little of "tame" toilet humour that I thought was sort of unnecessary but it was cute so it was acceptable. I think quite simply that when all is said and done that it just runs a little long and it works much better as a series than a feature length film. I also don't think they advertised it well because its hard to advertise. I never saw a single trailer for it which is unusual. But young or old if you're looking for something different and unique and if you love animation and art then you'll want to check this out at least once. As an outsider I couldn't help but notice how cool water looked in the film whether in a puddle or wherever it was. For me as I said, it will always be remembered fondly. I hope its one of many dates with my little girl to my favourite place in the world, the movies! XO Lauren!! 7/10
