Solomon Kane (2009)

Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane comes to life
12 October 2012
It seems that one of the hardest genres to get right are the ones consisting in the medieval world. The latest to try their hand at the genre is Solomon Kane based on the Robert E. Howard book. With a strong actor like James Purefoy leading the charge in this supernatural period piece could they finally deliver something worthy of the genre or will this be just another forgettable journey to medieval times.

Solomon Kane follows mercenary of Queen Elizabeth who denounces violence fearing his destiny is leading to hell, but when an innocent family and kidnap their daughter in front of him, he is forced back into action to rescue her and hopefully that of his eternal soul as well. This is one of those films that have no business of working as well as it does, but will surprise most fans of the genre. Most of this is thanks to Purefoy himself, as it seems like he was born to play these kinds of roles. The rest of the cast do a decent enough job to round everything out, but this is Purefoy's film all around. The story here is pretty straight forward and moves along at a decent pace. Initially it seems like this film may be another low budget entry to this genre, and while may, they clearly used it in all the right places because it delivers a higher quality over all film. Sometimes the effects are the only thing that separates a film from a Syfy original film and something more, and with the exception of a few here and there, the effects work really well here.

The sets and visuals give this movie a much bigger scope and feel than you would expect for a release like this stepping it up even more. This is one of the better films of this genre to come along in quite some time. If you are a fan of these types of films then join Solomon Kane on his epic quest for action and redemption.
