I'm definitely not going to be the first person to jump on the Seth Rogen fan club bus. I don't dislike the guy, he's had his moments but I think he is over rated as a whole. However, Observe and Report seemed to be the only thing playing at the time so I went to see it. Usually in a mainstream film you can find SOMETHING redeemable but with Observe and Report it is such tried and true garbage that I would literally never choose to sit through it ever again. I can't hardly believe that anyone could actually like this film or anything about it, although I know everyone has different tastes. At the very least even with a bad comedy you can find yourself chuckling at the stupidity but I can guarantee that I sat through this without ever cracking a smile. If I wasn't so vehemently dead set against walking out of movies in an actual theater I would have spared myself the hour and a half of torture. The whole concept of the film is incredibly stupid but that doesn't make for a bad comedy. In this case the concept, the cast, the story, the plot, the jokes, just every piece of this film just simply blows.
Seth Rogen has talent, it would be hard to argue with that. He is a good comedian and I think he has some great roles ahead of him. I also think he's a child at heart and truly just likes to goof off. Unfortunately that doesn't always translate to watchable movies and Observe and Report is one giant goof off and Rogen's credibility drops starring in this trash. Anna Faris is no stranger to this type of slapstick, gross out stupidity having done four Scary Movie films. Still she has stepped it up with a really cute comedy like House Bunny but this just sets her back completely. Her character is stupid, and disgusting, and just completely vapid. The chemistry with her and Rogen is ridiculous and barely existent. Ray Liotta joins the cast and maybe potentially lifts the film from being a big fat zero. Liotta is good as a wise cracking, annoyed Police Detective. He has better chemistry making fun of, and getting the better of, Rogen's stupider than stupid mall cop. I could discuss the supporting cast, most of them are Rogen's sidekicks, but they don't add to the story and while they aren't really awful they aren't worth mentioning.
One of the positive reviews I read on IMDb that still boggles my mind stated that Observe and Report was "darker" than a typical goof ball comedy. This comedy is not dark, it's twisted and stupid but that doesn't equal "dark." Jody Hill directs and writes the film...both reasons why he should be banned from Hollywood. He has very little experience behind the camera and his big break to the big screen is a disaster in my opinion. The last thing you want to do is watch this with anyone who is easily offended or doesn't like gross out comedies. When Seth Rogen has sex with a vomiting, nearly passed out Anna Faris, you won't be laughing. Nor will the last five minutes of the film which features a very unattractive Randy Gambill running completely naked around the screen. Skip this unless you really are an enormous Seth Rogen fan although this might change your mind. Observe and Report is garbage. 1/10
