Well, You Can't Argue With The Title ...
29 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
... but that's about the only thing. This is one of those concepts that must have seemed fantastic on paper but really has no choice of working in reality: 18 stories, 18 directors, 18 segments five minutes each, come on, fellas, what can you HOPE to achieve with a format like that. I guess there's a market among the short attention-span set but other than that one can only marvel at some of the bizarre teamings: Fanny Ardant and Bob HOSKINS! You're kidding, right. On the other hand Gad Ulliel and Marianne Faithful deserve each other so let them get on with it. Ben Gazzara and Gena Rowlands have worked together previously notably in Rowland's late husband, John Cassevetes movies but here both look bizarrely geriatric - Gazzara appears to have suffered a stroke - and even Gerard Depardieu who co-directed the segment can't save it. The sad thing is that Paris IS a beautiful city just made for romance yet here it comes across as ALMOST Waukegan on an average Thursday.
