Review of Fanaa

Fanaa (2006)
6/10
Good though not as awesome as hyped up to be
5 June 2006
One of the most awaited movies of the year, Fanaa makes box office records as one of India's favorite actresses returns after a long hiatus alongside one of the country's most talented and popular actors. Seems like the pairing of Kajol and Aamir Khan is enough to create the frenzy surrounding this movie. As is expected from Yash Raj films, Fanaa, too, has a great story, along with awesome performances, visuals, technical effects, direction, etc. However, the story is not as superb as hoped for. It is quite similar to the Amisha-Bobby-Arjun starrer, Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai, as far as the "blind love" goes and is also a bit reminiscent of Veer-Zaara. Music, usually one of the strongest points of a Yash Raj film, is rather disappointing. "Chand Sifarish" and "Boondon Se" are mainly the good numbers. "Aaklam Baklam" or whatever it's called should have been edited out. Cinematography is absolutely beautiful. Kajol is obviously the best in the film, while Aamir is great. Tabu is very nice as are Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, and the really cute child artist. All performances are top-notch. Shiny Ahuja and Lara Dutta have really no role to speak of. The theme is really nice: Choosing between good and evil is easy. Choosing the greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils is what defines life.
