Review of Spiral

Spiral (1998)
3/10
A virus you don't want to suffer from!

Warning: Spoilers
Dr Ando an old friend of Takayama finds a cryptic note inside Takayama's stomach while doing an autopsy and he gets himself involved in the mystery of the tape.

Supposedly Ring and its first sequel The Spiral were shot back-to-back, the original was a blockbuster but it was the opposite for The Spiral. From what I saw it was one truly bizarre sequel, based on the book by Kôji Suzuki... who also wrote Ring.

The whole supernatural plot and tone from the original is changed to some really out there storyline on life & the pain (well that's what it seemed like to me)and now it's got some crappy scientific plot, trying to explain how it's a virus and not a curse that kills the people when watching the tape... or is it the tape? I don't want to give to much away, as I might spoil the twists but you will be in disbelief when they happen.

No wonder why it failed, and so they decided to make the replacement sequel, Ring 2 (1999) with the cast and director of the original. Which was A LOT better and connected with Ring perfectly.

The whole idea and purpose of this virus just got really stupid and ridiculously confusing; the further along it went… especially the ending, I just couldn't help myself from snickering in disbelief at the last few lines of dialogue in the film.

This was supposed to be a horror/thriller film, but where were the scares and chills… there were none! Sadako has suddenly changed appearance and is given a personality and because of that she loses any effect she had in Ring.

There's really nothing much going on in this film, or actually to care about. Maybe I need to read the book, to truly understand and enjoy because this film was far from entertaining.

Um I think I'll stop right here as really I've got nothing good to type. Though actually it had a decent atmosphere of doom and gloom, but yeah that's about it.
