The always hilarious Steve Martin benefits through his willingness to share the best lines with John Candy, a gifted comedian who's biggest failing tended to be script selection. Candy actually delivers what is easily his funniest, and certainly most touching performance, and his chemistry with Martin leads you to believe they had been working together for years. If you don't like this touching comedy, then you don't like touching comedies.
