Don't hold your breath...
19 July 2018
US documentary makers seem to love stretching something and this show is a classic example. Lots of dramatic music while the camera zooms in on the face of one of the participants. Endless summarizing of what has already been discovered (actually pretty much nothing), teasers for what is to be discovered next (generally, absolutely nothing). Use of very tenuous evidence and conspiracy theory. Classic example is the use of the 'Dear Boss' letters to try to link Holmes to the Ripper killings. Problem is, the Dear Boss letters have pretty much been discounted as fakes, probably written by a journalist to sell newspapers.

Doctor Who: Vincent and the Doctor (2010)
Season 5, Episode 10

Brilliant episode
11 July 2018
First of all, the accent thing. Yes, Vincent speaks with a Scottish accent. This is the Tardis translating his French to English for Amy's ears. She is Scottish, so, she hears a Scottish accent. This is addressed early on when Vincent asks Amy if she is Dutch because she speaks French with a Dutch accent. Vincent will also be speaking French with his Dutch accent. If you listen to the restaurant staff, they speak with a rural English (South Wests England). They are rural French people, so the Tardis translates to a rural English accent.

I loved this episode because it brings together to loves of my life - Doctor Who and Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent is played brilliantly by Tony Curran. I loved the some what corny scenes where they re-crated some of Van Gogh's most famous paintings - it had to be done. Vincent's mental ill health was addressed sensitively and the scene in the gallery at the end is something I wish could happen in real life to Vincent.

Can the canned laughter
9 July 2018
I have given this episode and, for that matter the whole revived show two stars, not because of the quality of writing and acting, which is hit and miss. The big let down for the revived show is the decision to use canned laughter. I don't like canned laughter, but can tolerate a little, but, in this instance, a laughter track is added for every 'joke' or facial expression. It is not natural and, actually distracts from the very rare funny joke or scene.

The X-Files: My Struggle IV (2018)

Totally underwhelmed
5 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I recall watching the 'The Truth' when it was first broadcasted and the feeling of loss when the X Files ended. I have just watched the final episode of season 11, and feel, totally underwhelmed. Seasons 10 and 11 had some okay episodes, and some truly awful episodes - My Struggle IV fits into the latter category. No tangible story line other than a lot of running round, shouting and car chases. And, Mulder shooting CSM and then just pushing him into the water without making sure he was dead - this is the guy that survived a air to ground (cave) missile and seems to have been cured of his cancer. Not even a bullet to the head - the same thing CSM did Mulder who was obviously William.

Most Haunted (2002–2019)

In a 'haunted' house, everyone can hear Yvette scream.
6 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Even though I am a complete skeptic regarding ghosts, I have watched this show for years, probably since it was first broadcast in the UK. I especially like watching the episodes that take place in abandoned or empty buildings such as old cinemas.

One thing I find most bemusing is, despite being professional ghost hunters, is how much screaming takes place, especially from Yvette, who leads the ghost hunt.

Without fail, during each episode at some stage, especially when they are using night vision and little can be seen, something will happen, usually off screen and Yvette will begin screaming and running away. This will generally initiate a general five minutes of mayhem, with the rest of the crew joining in the panic.

After over 13 years of ghost hunting, you would think that Yvette has hardened up a bit and not run at the first sign of a ghost actually showing up. The poor ghosts must be so confused. They are asked to show a sign and then when they do, everyone runs away.

I am not petrol head, but love this show.
8 May 2014
I am not a petrol head, but I love watching this show. It is great to see old classics and not so classic cars being given a second lease of life. Mike and Ed work very well together, and un-like other car shows, especially those from the USA, they do not engage in exaggerated emotions and tantrums. The most emotion you will see is Ed getting a pat on the back from Mike. In most instances, the vesicles are restored to factory condition, with an occasional upgrade of suspension and brakes etc, with very few cars being turned into hot rods or pimped rides. If you have watched the show since the beginning, it is interesting to see how Ed and Mike have become more confident in front of the camera. The budget has also increased significantly, as has Mikes waist line.

The show also showcase artisans based on industrial estates that continue with some of the trades and skills that have all but died in the UK. Yes, it is true that if you take in Ed's time as a quality mechanic, the resale price of the car would result in a loss, but that is not what this show is really about - I imagine Ed gets a good salary off the Discovery channel.
