The Polar Express (2004)
An Annual Must Watch!
'The Polar Express' follows a young boy, who's questioning his belief in Santa Clause. After boarding a mysterious train he embarks on an extraordinary journey to the North Pole, putting his beliefs to the test.
This movie is one of many childhood Christmas classics to me. An annual must watch! Although some may find the animation style "creepy", this film is packed with extremely gripping scenes, amazing visuals and a jolly atmosphere! I do believe the story's moral is one of the most compelling parts about this movie!
I do find it somewhat interesting that we never learn the names of some of the main characters within this film. I always thought that was a rather peculiar element.
This is an amazing family friendly movie. A great watch during the holiday seasons. Perhaps I'm blinded by nostalgia. However, I do believe this film is worth checking out during your countdown to Christmas! 😊
Thanksgiving (2023)
A Great New Addition to the Slasher Genre!
When a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, an axe-wielding maniac terrorises the town of Plymouth. Picking off victims one by one. These revenge killings will soon be revealed as part of a much larger, sinister plan.
'Thanksgiving' is a great new addition to the slasher genre! From its creatively crafted Thanksgiving themed kills, to its unique opening scene. This film is a fun gory movie that I think will be well loved amongst slasher/horror fans.
I had a really great time watching this movie. Eli Roth's exaggerated and gruesome kills are some of the best scenes within this movie. (Coming from a slasher fan, I promise I'm not a psycho!) I love that the Thanksgiving holiday now has its own horror movie to accompany it.
Another big praise HAS to be that opening sequence. Not only does it give us our killer's motive, but it is so interestingly executed and unlike other opening scenes we've seen!
I highly recommend checking this movie out! It definitely did not disappoint and has so much potential!
Good Burger 2 (2023)
Unnecessary Sequel.
'Good Burger 2' follows the return of Ed and Dexter as they reunite to help save the iconic and much loved fast-food restaurant, 'Good Burger' from falling into the wrong hands. Also introducing a new generation of employees.
Going into this movie, I made sure to keep my expectations tame. At the end of the day it is a reboot/sequel, that typically are either hit or miss. However, I was intrigued by nostalgia. But I must say... This film is a big MISS.
Firstly, there are the odd moments sprinkled throughout the film that pay homage to the original. Which I did appreciate having grown up with the first movie. However, I didn't really enjoy myself whilst watching. The film suffers as it's overloaded with too much modern day pop culture references and a mediocre plot.
There are a few story elements included in this movie that I find myself either irritated by, or just don't understand the reason to include such themes. For example, Ed's children. There's like 8 of them, and one just so happens to be an exact copy and paste of Ed. Overly dumbed down with a raspy voice. I found this to be a rather annoying inclusion.
Another pet peeve of this film, is the random inclusion of celebrity cameos. There is a whole montage of self-recorded footage of random celebrities singing about Good Burger? This movie also had mini random musical sequences that came out of nowhere.
The new characters in this film also serve little to no purpose. Perhaps one of the more uninteresting parts of this movie. Which is sad, as I would've hoped to have left the film having enjoyed some of the fresh choices they introduced.
To conclude, I severely wasted my time watching 'Good Burger 2' if you're intrigued in the slightest. Just rewatch the first. Save yourself the headache.
The Marvels (2023)
Feels Like an Incomplete Movie.
'The Marvels' follows Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau as they get their powers entangled, causing them to switch places and forcing them to work together to save the universe.
One of my main praises for this movie is Iman Vellani's performance as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel. I think she's a major highlight in this film. There's something about her energy that is so likeable and compelling. I really believe she is the heart of this movie.
This film was quite fun to watch. I think that the bond between Monica, Carol and Kamala is another key selling point within this movie. Their chemistry is so strong and enjoyable whenever they're on screen together. The scenes in which they're all fighting together are some of the best choreographed fight sequences I've seen in a while. Seeing them using their powers and switching places all over the show, is just so satisfying to watch.
A notable dislike about this film that I see most people agreeing on, is that as a whole it feels like an incomplete movie. Almost as if the film consists of jumping to random scenes, leading to the story feeling rather messy and all over the place.
There are many Easter eggs within this movie. Some of which seem to pave the way for the future of the MCU and these characters. Especially the post credit scene! I think some fans will go nuts.
Overall, I'd give this film a 3/5 stars. It's definitely a fun watch. Just somewhat messy. If Marvel had just spent a little more time fleshing out certain scenes and storylines. It would've made up for a much more enjoyable movie.
Inside Out (2015)
One of the Last Good Pixar Movies
'Inside Out' follows Riley, a young girl who has just moved to San Francisco with her parents. Leaving her life in Minnesota behind. She and her five core emotions, Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear and Disgust, struggle to cope with her new life.
I have a very sentimental attachment to this movie. I do believe it's one of the best films produced by Pixar so far. The emotional journey we see Riley go through in this movie, displayed in such creative ways is so touching. Transforming elements such as abstract thought and memory into a somewhat educational and effective format.
Not only is the story and characters such a strong part of this movie, the animation and attention to detail is incredible. There is so much beautiful scenery and cinematography throughout the film.
I couldn't recommend this movie enough! Whether it's to sit down with the family, or enjoying a quiet night in. This film is a must watch!
The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
A confusing mess...
'The Exorcist: Believer' follows two friends, Angela and Katherine, who begin to show signs of demonic possession. Unleashing a catastrophic chain of events that force a terrified and desperate Father Victor to seek out Chris MacNeil, the only person alive who's witnessed anything like it before.
Going into this film, I didn't have the highest of expectations. Truth be told, I haven't quite gotten around to watching the original Exorcist movie. Although, I think there are scenes and elements within this movie fans of the original will appreciate. For me, this fell rather flat.
To begin with, the film had me intrigued. I was quite invested in the mystery of what happened to these girls during those 3 days they were missing. However, the film doesn't ever really explain that. After the girls were found, to me this film just felt like a mix/match of scenes that didn't make the most sense. Making the movie feel very rushed.
The last 20/30 minutes or so, in which they were confronting the demons possessing the girls, had me somewhat interested. As the parents were now faced with such a difficult ultimatum. Choosing who should live between the two girls. Tricking one of the parents, leading to the other girl living instead. That was... okay, I guess.
Overall, I was a little disappointed at the end of this movie. The whole thing just feels very forgettable. Could've done with skipping this one! I suppose I'd recommend it if you're really interested.
Chucky (2021)
Season 3, Part 1
After the events of season 2, Jake and Devon assist Lexy in finding her missing sister Caroline. Meanwhile, Chucky has settled in with "America's First Family"... in the White House! Now Devon, Jake and Lexy must find their way into the most secure house in the world.
As a consistent Chucky fan, for the past two years I've been looking forward to seeing our favourite little red head return to our screens. So far, with what has been released of season 3, (due to the actors strike) I've been quite enjoying this new season.
The Chucky television series for me, is just such a fun watch. I really love seeing the group dynamic between our main trio. However, I do wish they would attempt to make Chucky a little scarier. Like the original movies. For me, I sometimes don't love the campy 'Seed of Chucky' vibes we get in this show. Aside from that, it is a really good show. The end of part 1, does feel a bit abrupt. But forgiven, as it wasn't supposed to be cut in half. They only managed to film so much, before the strike.
There were a few surprises sprinkled throughout the first four episodes. Some of which had my jaw swinging. This is a spoiler free review, but if you've seen the show. You'll know what I'm referring to! If you're a fan of Chucky or need something to watch. I highly recommend you give this show a watch. They did release a teaser for what's to come in part 2, and I cannot wait to see more! Until next time...
Loki (2021)
Best Marvel Disney Plus Series?
'Loki' season 2 follows Loki, Mobius and Hunter B-15 trying to navigate the multiverse in hopes of finding Sylvie, Renslayer and Miss Minutes. Meanwhile, dealing with the consequences of the events of the first season.
While I believe 'Loki' is one of the more entertaining and enjoyable Marvel Disney Plus series, I have various thoughts on this new season. Again, consisting of six episodes. Some of which are more interesting than others. I feel this time around it falls a little flat in comparison to season one.
Viewing the season as a whole, I think there are moments I definitely enjoyed. I do believe the season starts off pretty strong. However, I feel the show lost me a little bit around the middle episode or two. Which I found to be a bit boring here and there. Typically, with these Marvel Disney+ shows you have a somewhat strong starting point, filler episodes and then a decent finale. Loki Season 2 doesn't stray away from that formula.
The finale had me intrigued, but also somewhat rather confused. Although, I do believe some of my confusion may be somewhat caused by the recent news of the MCU being in shambles, and not knowing which direction to go in. I do think the ending of Loki season 2 sets up a potential storyline for the future of the MCU. If they decide to keep the Kang storyline.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Great Example of What A Multiverse Movie Should Be.
'Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse' follows Miles Morales as he swings across the multiverse, in which he encounters a group of "Spider-People" charged with protecting its very existence. When the hero's disagree on how to handle a new threat. Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero.
'Across The Spider-Verse' is one of the most thrilling, emotionally charged journeys I've witnessed in superhero storytelling. I think this sequel ups the game to its predecessor. One of the biggest standout elements to me is the difference in art/animation styles between the different universes. Each variation of Spider-Man comes from their own unique world with incredible visuals. You can really tell the film makers put their heart into this movie.
One of my biggest praises for this movie is how well they handle the multiverse aspect. Over the last couple of years, the multiverse is an element that keeps popping up in film. But not all seem to do it right. THE STORY in this film is so well executed and has viewers captivated from start to finish. I really believe that's where the film shines most. As an additional feature, there are so many surprise cameos throughout the movie that I think Spider-Man fans will love and appreciate.
I thoroughly enjoy every moment of this film, from its eye catching visuals, to its emotionally charged storytelling. Everything about this movie is incredible.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
So Much Nostalgia!
'Spider-Man: No Way Home' follows a troubled Peter Parker needing the help of Doctor Strange to forget his exposed secret identity as Spider-Man. However, when Strange's spell goes terribly wrong, unwanted guests begin entering their universe.
The experience of watching 'No Way Home' in a full screening room filled with eager and anticipated fans is honestly unmatched. I remember making sure my friends and I had booked our tickets the minute they were on sale. I can wholeheartedly say that this film did not disappoint.
I grew up on the previous Spider-Man films, so watching this movie was like a full circle moment. Embracing the new, but appreciating the old. I really do love this film. Regardless of the movie being very nostalgia packed, I think the actual story is something rather special. Seeing Peter truly all alone at the end of the film is both heartbreaking and exciting for the future of Spider-Man in the MCU.
High School Musical: The Musical - The Series (2019)
Like a Disney Version of Glee?
'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' follows the students of East High School, as they decide to stage a musical of 'High School Musical' the film series that was shot in their school, with their newfound drama teacher Miss Jenn.
What I find really interesting about this series is how they aren't trying to replicate or reboot the original film series. Instead they've created their own characters and story, with the ability to pay homage to the original via the musical they are producing. So in a way, they're incomparable to each other. Clever!
With this new show, comes new original songs! Many of which are really catchy and very likeable. So much so that one of the show's songs 'All I Want' (performed and written by Olivia Rodrigo) debuted on the U. S Billboard Hot 100 at number 90! The succession led to the song being certified platinum!
As much as I like this show, I have to admit that season 3 falls really flat for me. I think it has its moments that are okay. But the season as a whole is just not the greatest. However, I do believe the show redeems itself for its fourth and final season.
Overall, 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' is a great show with a fun balance of music, drama and comedy! I definitely recommend this show for both families and young adults!
Zoey 102 (2023)
Too much controversy?
'Zoey 102' is a movie sequel/reboot of the Nickelodeon original series 'Zoey 101'. This film follows Zoey Brooks, (Jamie Lynn Spears) this time in her 20s, attempting to figure out love and life. As it turns out, Zoey and Chase did not end up in Hawaii during the summer after the events of 'Zoey 101'. In fact they haven't spoken since. However, when close friends Quinn and Logan announce they're getting married. Zoey and Chase find themselves in the wedding party.
Much like many others, I was blinded by nostalgia going into this movie. Wasn't everybody? Having seen the film through. I have some thoughts. Firstly, the movie follows a somewhat predictable plot. Zoey is challenged with juggling two different events that fall on the same day. To much surprise, everything falls apart. Alongside that, there is this strange sub plot of (I kid you not) a murderer on the loose known as the 'Malibu Murderer'. WHAT!?
I can't even begin to explain the messiness of this movie. Not only is the actual movie a bizarre mess. It's not so pretty behind the scenes either. The world of 'Zoey 101' has so much controversy surrounding it. It's a genuine surprise to me that this movie was even made. It's almost as if it was released to make people forget.
Overall, I think I could've done with skipping out on this one!
Friends (1994)
My Favourite Sitcom
'Friends' is an American TV sitcom, based on the lives of six best friends living in New York City. Throughout the course of 10 years and 10 seasons, these friends go through life lessons, family, love, drama, comedy, and most importantly friendship. Created by David Crane and Martha Kauffman.
'Friends' holds a very special and sentimental place in my heart. I was first introduced to the series a few years ago, after a close friend of mine had recommended the show to me.
There is something about this series that is so addictive and rewatchable. Every time I decide to watch it through, I almost have a new experience with it. Maybe that's because I can now relate to a scenario that I didn't before. Or a joke that I may have missed at first is now really funny. Regardless of it coming out so long ago. I believe this series still holds up really well.
I think there is something so special and unique about seeing newcomers discovering this series and becoming just as hooked as everybody else. Don't get me wrong, I was born after the show had wrapped and I love it. 'Friends' brings me so much comfort and is great for a 'bad day cure'.
"There's nothing better than a world where everybody's just trying to make each other laugh." - Mathew Perry.
Gen V (2023)
Best Spin-off Ever?
'Gen V' is a new Amazon original series set in the same diabolical world as 'The Boys'. This series follows the lives of hormonal, competitive, teen superheroes, the first of their kind to know that their superpowers come from "Compound V". These heroes put their physical, sexual and moral boundaries to the test.
My biggest praise for this series is that it doesn't follow one of those stereotypical superhero storylines, and I love it! Not that those kinds of stories can't be fun. It's definitely refreshing to have a new take on superhero media. 'Gen V' is extremely gripping, and has such captivating story elements that leaves you eagerly wanting the next episode.
As a spin-off, this show fits into 'The Boys' universe so well. There are definitely some scenes that will excite fans with cameos and teasing of the upcoming season 4. Now that I have finished Gen V I'm left desperately wanting more. Both of these series have a way of ensuring you are hooked!
'Gen V' and 'The Boys' are two great examples of what superhero TV shows should be. I wish shows that the MCU continue to produce were more like this. Kevin Fiege take notes.
Overall, I had an incredible time watching 'Gen V'. From the characters, the story, to the special effects. All really well written. I very much look forward to season 2 😉.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Thrilling and Addictive!
Unbelievably late to the party... However, Game of Thrones is one of the BEST series I've ever watched. I was blindsided headed into the show, not understanding the hype and glorification. Having now watched all 8 seasons of the HBO mediaeval - fantasy, I am in awe of the show.
Game of Thrones follows 'Nine noble families wage war against each other in order to gain control over the mythical land of Westeros. Meanwhile, a force is rising after millenniums and threatens the existence of living men.' According to Google.
This series is very well known for its shocking twists and captivating story elements. Which I must say, it can be VERY horrifying (in a good way!). Typically, I'm not very intrigued by shows/movies set 'way-back-when'. But Game of Thrones had me HOOKED. There are scenes that have still left me in a state of shock.
Looking back over the show, I do feel that the last two seasons fall a little flat. Characters seem to behave in ways that feel dishonest to their previous arcs. The final episode is also very controversial amongst fans. Make no mistake, there are some great episodes within these final seasons. For example, 'The Long Night' and 'The Spoils of War'. By all means, don't let these opinions influence your decision to watch the show. Game of Thrones is definitely worth the praise that it gets. I would 100% recommend adding this to your watch list.
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
The Fan Service!!!
Five Nights at Freddy's, is a movie adaptation of the video game created by Scott Cawthon. The movie follows a troubled security guard (Mike) starting his new night shift job at 'Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria'. After spending his first night on the job, he soon realises that everything is not as it seems and something sinister may be lurking...
As a fan of the franchise, having played most of the games, I am so effortlessly pleased by the amount of fan service within this movie. Emma Tammi (the director) has done an outstanding job at staying loyal to the fan base, while also adding new elements to spice things up.
While my opinion may be somewhat biassed, I must admit that I can see why newcomers may be left feeling underwhelmed or confused. In terms of horror, I believe this is where the film lacks most. The trailers almost seemed to promise much more of a scary movie. Make no mistake, there are some incredible scenes within the film that I know fans will go crazy for. However, somebody who's unfamiliar with the franchise but is an average horror fan. The movie may feel a little lacklustre.
The story can also feel a bit messy at times. But being honest, that's always kind of been the case with the games. There's just so much lore. Trying to fit all of that into a 1hr 50min movie and adapt it to fit general audiences, as well as the fans, proves to be rather tricky.
All in all, I had a really fun time with this film. The visuals are incredible, the setting is so nostalgic. There are so many moments that I think were handled with such care when paying homage to the video games. My only nit pic is that new audiences might not enjoy it as much as the fans.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (2022)
A New Generation Of Little Liars!!
So, I've finished watching the first three episodes of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and I honestly really love this new version of PLL. I am a huge fan of the original and have watched it through multiple times. I even quite enjoyed the other spin-offs too.
Although, having read some of the more negative reviews. It seems as though some others don't quite understand that this new series is a reimagining of the original taking place in the same universe. I'm getting quite fed-up with people complaining and comparing this to the original, as I feel this could easily stand really well on its own! A part of me even wishes that the original had taken the slasher-vibe that this series dawns so well! I really do believe that what the cast, crew and creators have made here is something rather special. If you are sceptical of this new version of a beloved Television Series, I definitely recommend you at least give it a go! I did, and I do not regret it!!
