Dune: Part Two (2024)
Confusing but great
This is an absolute movie theatre masterpiece. The cinematography, acting and the soundtrack are incredible and even more incredible on a big screen.
After seeing Dune 1, this one was definitely more action packed and moved the plot along nicely. But if you haven't read the books or fully understand this franchises' story (like me), you might find it a bit confusing.
There were a lot of scenes where I was unsure about what was going on, and the significance of certain roles I found a little bemusing; perhaps that's my lack of understanding and nothing against the movie.
Overall, the acting, set, score, direction make for a great watch. You should definitely see this in theatres and not at home. 8/10.
The Zone of Interest (2023)
Conceptually incredible
I am smart enough to understand what this film was trying to accomplish and I absolutely recognize it. It is so brilliant and the irony and juxtaposition of the scenarios are not lost on me.
However, I also found it a little hard to follow, and while the scenes that were dead silent for 5 minutes at a time surely probably hold an impact, I kept ZONING out. I like the simplicity and I absolutely love the concept but I was also kind of confused. There was a whole paragraph on the Wikipedia page that must've completely gone over my head.
It's probably my critical thinking skills that are to blame, but nonetheless, despite my watching experience, I can absolutely recognize how impactful this movie is. You can decide if you watch it. 7/10.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Happily surprised
I stayed away from this movie because every single review I stumbled upon claimed it was way too long and it looked quite boring. Fortunately, I had 3 hours to kill and I am actually very happy about it. The length of the film didn't really bother me because I found the story very interesting and the performances were fantastic. I also didn't find it slow at all. I actually didn't even expect to enjoy it so much but I did, and my probably very unpopular opinion was that this was better than Oppenheimer. I was expecting KOTFM to suck and Opp to blow me away, and somehow beyond my belief they ended up trading places. Very good. 8/10.
Nyad (2023)
Better than the negative reviews it's getting
I honestly don't know how this movie is getting a bad rep. If you like true stories, I don't think this movie could disappoint you. The story alone I find to be unbelievable on its own, but the movie was so entertaining and well done.
Annette and Jodie are great, and their chemistry as friends is wonderful. I don't know I personally don't understand it why it's getting so much slander from "film bros". I'd say watch it for yourself and decide, but I've seen it 3 times and it's a great film.
If I had to find one flaw, maybe the beginning being a little slow cause all the good stuff is in the middle-end. But just great. 8/10.
One Day (2011)
Probably great in its time, but the series is better
While I'm sure One Day is a solid movie on its own, it falls a little flat to the new series adaptation. Potentially biased because I watched the series first, but with the nature of the story taking place over the course of several years, it's very hard to form a connection to the characters in an hour and 48 minutes.
The movie lacked the depth that the series was able to create with the characters, and portrayed Emma's character in a way that I think is a bit more pathetic. Now I don't know which version rings true to the novel, but either way, the nature of the story reads better as a series.
Also, Leo Woodall > Jim Sturgess.
The Hill (2023)
Very very boring
Usually when a movie is about a true story, I am instantly hooked because I personally think it's kind of hard to mess that up. Sigh. This movie was so boring. Just from the synopsis I saw two very interesting angles for the movie and unfortunately they chose neither. It is mostly about Faith and God, and much less about baseball. The first act was insanely hard to get through. Around the second act it started picking up, but unfortunately led to my untimely exit with 47 minutes left in the movie. Incredibly long and I don't care how it ends. Would not recommend this to anyone. Plenty of better sports movies out there. This is barely about sports!
Memento (2000)
How is this rated so high?
I'm not trying to be dramatic but I don't get how the rating for this movie is so high. If you're looking for a high rated IMDb movie to watch, this is NOT IT. You find yourself constantly waiting for something to happen for not only a letdown of an ending, but an unexplained "not worth the wait" reveal. I was expecting way more from this movie because I love Christopher Nolan but man this was so stupid and it made no sense to me. Maybe it was good in its time? I don't know. I would never watch this again nor recommend it to anyone unless I hated them. I will say that the way it was filmed reverse-chronologically was cool in theory, but not really that enjoyable tbh. 5/10 for the attempt, I guess? The acting was decent too.
Oppenheimer (2023)
I've never fast forwarded a movie before this
Insanely disappointed in a movie that should've captured me from start to finish. The premise of the movie led me to believe that a lot more science and physics would be involved, as opposed to just talking about it. Also don't know how I'm supposed to be interested in a story with 700 characters and be expected to follow along. It was a really bad angle on a something that should've been much more interesting. Silver lining is definitely the acting but overall, I would never watch this again and it is definitely not Christopher Nolan's best work. If you have 3 hours to kill give it a watch, if not don't bother.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Had potential but left unsatisfied
Like most of the reviews left around this rating, I have a lot of issues with this show.
While the concept was strong, there were too many things that caused it to fall flat, even with a shocking twist ending.
The show is incredibly slow/boring, and definitely could've been told in 6 episodes rather than 8. (The episode of Calhoun day?? Why?)
The use of quick imagery flashbacks and jump cuts to allude to her past trauma were very confusing in the first half of the show, and then just became redundant. We get it. She has trauma.
Due to the pace of the show, by the last episode I was already checked out and wanting it to end, therefore the "shocking reveal" that Amma was the killer only being worth the last 0.5 seconds infuriated me. With a better layout of episodes they could've easily dedicated a final 10 minutes instead of 2 seconds to explore that ending.
I also learned there were post credits scenes? (Sorry is this marvel?? How is anyone supposed to know that?) and both scenes would have made the finale more interesting.
Overall, expected more but way too much fluff/unnecessary filler and lack of focus on the most interesting part of the storyline (which also needs to be backed up with detail in my opinion). Sometimes an abrupt shocking ending works but it wasn't strong enough for me to appreciate everything that came before it.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Not worthy of the bad ratings
Even though my anticipation and excitement for this film was unfortunately plagued by the cast drama and the horrible reviews, I was still looking forward to seeing DWD. I feel like the slander on this movie is too high for no reason! I thought it was completely enjoyable, and very intriguing. The soundtrack and set design are incredible, and Florence Pugh is a STAR. I think the people who wanted more detail or development are fair but this is the kind of movie that can get away without it, in terms of artistic direction. I really liked this movie and I think anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers will get a kick out of it. I think it was undeserving of all the harsh reviews.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Wakanda Forever or Atlantis????
An unfortunate sequel to a really strong Origin film. I had a lot of hopes for this movie but I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the first one (of course) without Chadwick, but this movie was missing so much.
The plot was incredibly slow and I personally think they took the wrong angle completely. I was incredibly disinterested for that hour long scene underwater (or at least that's what it felt like), that there was no coming back from that.
I've never wanted to reach for my phone in a Marvel movie before this one. No rewatch value for me. But I will give credit where it's due for the amazing wardrobe, soundtrack and to the beautiful tribute in the opening and the credits.
Elvis (2022)
Austin Butler's Well-Deserved Big Break
An amazing film that really came to life with Austin Butler's incredible performance as Elvis Presley. Extremely impressed to know that Butler did a lot of his own singing for this film. A pleasant and enjoyable film for anyone who's heard of Elvis Presley. My only downside is that it was a little too long. Nonetheless, give Austin Butler the Oscar!
Ozark (2017)
One of the best shows I've seen in a while
The final 7 episodes of Ozark have been released and I am not ashamed to say I binged it all in one night. A great, thrilling and suspenseful show that I am going to miss. I haven't seen a show that has made me this anxiously excited since Prison Break and Breaking Bad. Extremely well done and will be looking forward to rewatching it down the road.
CODA (2021)
Simply beautiful
When I saw this movie was nominated for an Oscar, I was really expecting a pretentious, long and extremely slow story. But as a lover of sign language, I was compelled to watch it. I couldn't have been more wrong about the nature of the film. Such a beautiful story and so enjoyable. Everything about the movie was so touching and it is definitely a movie that is now one of my favourites.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
How did this win Best Picture?
Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie desperately needed the rest of the Avengers alongside them to capture my interest even slightly. I was wide awake and this movie was putting me to sleep. I had no idea where it was going - for a second I thought it was about to look like Brokeback Mountain's plot, which would've been way more interesting then where it actually went!!! Better war movies out there. I do not recommend.
The Batman (2022)
Robert Pattinson - a great Batman!!
If you were second guessing Robert Pattinson for this role, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Fantastic job bringing the infamous character back to the big screen, and the story line was just as good I'd say. Even though it was action packed I kind of found it to be a little slow. Typically I don't tend to notice a films length, but this felt incredibly long. Not as good as the Christian Bale ones but still good. 7/10.
Moon (2009)
I am so confused
I needed some help from wiki for this one. Cool concept but definitely requires your full attention cause I couldn't figure out what was going on for the life of me. After researching the plot and understanding it better, it must have been great for the people who understood.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Hilarious and terrifiyingly accurate
So many parallels of our current world and an extremely accurate depiction of how it would react to a extinction-level comet, as a metaphor for the current climate crisis. Phenomenal cast and story. Worth a watch.
Stay (2005)
So bad that my brother is mad at me for choosing it
This movie had a lot of potential but I wish I DIDNT STAY. My sister had the right idea in mind and walked out 30 minutes in. I lost all my credibility in movie picking for this one. Not worth the demotion. I gave it a 6 because after I Wikipedia'd it, I understood it better and also because I love Ryan Gosling.
Life (2017)
Great movie - not deserving of this rating
This is a great movie if you're interested in space and science. It's a short thriller but it grabs your interest quite fast. Great cast and super enjoyable, had the runtime been a little longer it could've been better with more time for plot/character development. Either way, the rating is entirely too low. Good movie.
Beautiful Boy (2018)
Emotional rollercoaster
An authentic, powerful, and heartbreaking look into the struggles of addiction. David and Nic Sheff's memoirs were brought to life in this tragic and vivid peak at an addiction and it's effects on a family.
Though some may find the plot to be slow, every element of this movie (except for the soundtrack) is crucial in relaying the frustrations, sadness, and helplessness that comes with addiction. The film emits pain directly through the incredible performances given by Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet, which truly set the empathetic nature of the story. I think that the repetitive nature of the film is a key element to understanding the hindrance and frustration that follows the journey to recovery. The realism and verisimilitude of this film makes it unlike the other features that have tackled such a prevalent theme. Give it a watch.
Half Nelson (2006)
Was expecting way more
I was so excited coming into a movie with a story line that intrigued me, one of my favorite male actors, and critical accolades, but was extremely disappointed. I was 40 minutes into this film and nothing had happened. I decided to stick it out and I made the wrong decision. The script was lackluster and the movie was just tedious as a whole. Dissatisfied.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Amazing Movie
Bradley Cooper's directorial debut is a smash in this emotional and captivating adaptation of the original film. Gaga's impassioned performance as Ally will make you forget she ever was a pop icon, alongside Bradley Cooper's prodigious transformation into a gruff, brooding, rock star. With a beautiful story line that sheds light on the struggles of addiction, coupled with a stimulating soundtrack, this movie is a great experience from start to finish. Definitely worthy of its success.
Lion (2016)
Heartbreaking & Powerful True Story
If you are looking for an amazing movie to watch, please look no further. This movie will capture you in every way possible. It is so emotionally thrilling and will keep you locked in through every second. I have always been a fan of true stories but I have to say this is one of the most incredible films I've ever seen. Paired with incredible performances and a gripping soundtrack, the story line will shake you to your core. Incredibly deserving of all its success, and would recommend it to anyone with a heart.
Titanic (1997)
Exceptional
The tale of the ill-fated, unsinkable, R.M.S. Titanic is a tale we all know too well, but could not have been illustrated more beautifully. James Cameron went above and beyond illuminating this tragedy of the 1940s, paralleling the pain, heartbreak, romance, and anger from the horrific event directly through the film. The two of the strongest performances ever given by DiCaprio and Winslet, that it still remains unforgettable almost 25 years later. The gut wrenchingly beautiful score by James Horner is one of the film's crucial elements, displaying a whole new realm of emotions with every note. This film is deserving of all of its success, and will forever be a classic, timeless, and celebrated masterpiece.
