Mamma Mia! (2008)
10/10
Wonderful
19 June 2008
I didn't know what to expect when going into watch "Mamma Mia", was this gonna be another Hairspray or Across the Universe or Rent? This was a lighthearted, quite enjoyable movie of its own style, Meryl Strep blew the entire audience away with her comedic persona in this movie. After seeing her in Devil Wears Prada, you are shaken momentarily after seeing her climb on top a roof singing "Mamma Mia!" and swoon and the dance teenage giddy girl dance. You'll love this movie for trio of older woman characters, they were all so funny. Mr. James Bond's character and singing was such a hilarious delight for the audience, we couldn't believe this was the man who played a top secret spy agent.

With just the right amount of eccentricity, heart, and *get out of those movie chairs and DANCE IN THE AISLE* ABBA music, you'll never want this adventure to end.

Totally New Scene
10 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Shrek 3 is GREAT! It was just as funny as the other Shreks, with some scenes that really hit you with funny gags, i.e. pop references. They used a lot of 70s-80s songs for the grownups to have a ton of laughs also. Some of the humor I found surprisingly a bit too adult but Shrek 3 was able to pull it off without being too PG-13. I wish they could have shown more of Fiona's character develop, ever since Shrek 2 she's kind of stepped aside a bit. ALL the voice actors were AMAZING, Justin Timberlake did a surprisingly amazing job at King Artie. The princesses are hilarious and the other characters such as the gingerbread man still have that same comedic relief. Shrek 3 also uses different themes that weren't seen in Shrek 2 and Shrek 1. Major themes such as just being yourself! The dying frog king was the funniest part for me.

Miss Potter (2006)

A "Mary Poppins" Merry Movie :)
9 December 2006
"Miss Potter" is a wonderful movie caused me to coo, "AwwWWwwWw..." rather often. My friend and I thought it was such a heart-warming movie, through every scene, we kept wondering, "Wait, when does the climatic bad part happen?" This movie shows the inspiring journey that the successful author of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter, undergoes.

Beatrix loved drawing woodland animals as a girl and telling stories about them to her maid and younger brother. Despite her mother's stolid opinion against her adroit hobby, Beatrix displays her fortitude as a young woman trying to get a publisher. She is introduced to the youngest son of a publishing company, who is played by the urbane and charming Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge). Miss Potter's only friends were her drawings of her forest creatures, until she met the young publisher and her comical sister. Her drawings come to life (you see them animated whenever Beatrix looks at them) and are reflections of characters in her own life and feelings.

Reoccuring themes such as friendship, anti-marriage in the early 1900s in the views of suffragettes, and attainment of one's dreams.

Highly recommended for anyone who's been wanting a poignant, feel-good film. :)

Happy Feet (2006)

Hilarious and Realistically Haunting at the Same Time
11 November 2006
This is the kind of movie that conceals deeper depths and vividly exhilarating emotion overall.

First interpretation: "Ok, it's a movie about a penguin that dances and has trouble finding a mate. How profound can this movie be?" Then the movie revealed themes I never thought they would accomplish such as Religious fanaticism and Human's destruction of the environment.

It reminded me of 6th Sense because it was so twisted yet taught a very important moral lesson.

Robin Williams is the highlight of the movie, his 2 characters are both well portrayed and well voiced.

Highly recommended. It made me want to go out and save the penguins.

Nacho Libre (2006)

Overuse of rejected Napoleon Dynamite Humor
17 June 2006
The publicity of this movie will get to you. Hot Topic clothing, magnets, keychains, were out instores even before this movie came out, the directors desperately thinking that Nacho Libre is the next Napoleon Dynamite. I swear, they could've saved a whole lotta money for a entirely better cause.

Between deciding to watch Cars and Nacho Libre, my friends and I debated to watch Nacho Libre, due to the fact that the director of School of Rock was involved. We love Jack Black too and I consider Napoleon D to be a great movie in its own unique way.

But after watching Nacho Libre, we all decided it was a waste of our time and we could've been watching a more thought-out written, funny, and interesting movie instead.

If you've watched Napololeon Dynamite, you will know the punchline and what happens next in every sad attempt of a joke. It's like they decided to use up the rejected jokes of Napoleon Dynamite. Seating in our seats, I noticed that after almost every joke we had the expression of "...Was that supposed to be funny? I'll just wait...It'll probably get better soon." But it didn't. I ended up being half asleep and wishing I could just get up and leave, but my faith in Jack Black's acting made me stay.

There wasn't a major climax in this film at all, the problems the characters come up against are solve too easily and just come their way.

The songs were good, and one song kept showing up in parts of the movie. I liked it but the film's themes didn't have an impact on me at all to be moved by the songs.

I found some characters to have personalities totally randomly scraped together. There were rare parts scattered around the movie that made me laugh out loud, yet Napoleon Dynamite kept me constantly laughing throughout. Jack Black is a great choice to be in this idea for a film, but the WRITING and PLOT just made this film crash.

I know for this kind of humor, you're supposed to know overanalyze things and hope for that Hollywood movie kinda dialogue. One of the major reasons Napoleon Dynamite will be compared as much better than Nacho Libre is that even if both pairs of main characters are the underdogs in both films, you feel like you can more relate to the main pair of Napoleon and his new friend, Pedro.

The ending left me unsatisfied, with a very lame scenic view. I kept thinking, "No way...This cannot be the ending." and in some parts I thought it would be good to just end the movie right there.

I highly, highly, recommend to just RENT this movie to watch Jack Black. Save your 10 bucks and expenses on popcorn.
