One Hour Photo (2002)
The best character portrait since Taxi Driver.
Robin Williams gives a very good, albeit surprisingly scary performance here. He plays Sy, a very lonely and psychologically damaged man who works as a photo developer at a local chain store, he becomes completely obsessed with what he perceives as the "perfect family." Visually, it is simplistic but also striking, there is a hint of hyper-realism in the general look of the film. Robin Williams can give a very good dramatic performance when he is given a good script, but in this film he goes to a completely different level. He literally transforms into Sy, and the result is a weak, although dangerous character who we genuinely feel sorry for.
I am not sure if anyone has made this comparison before me, but when I watch this film, it reminds me a little bit of Taxi Driver, both Travis and Sy are lonely, their motivations are completely different of course, but both these films are essentially character portraits that deal with loneliness. The supporting cast give reasonably good performances but Williams truly carries the movie.
In closing, this film is far from being the best of all time, but it is a great film nonetheless and I recommend it to people who liked Taxi Driver.
Last Days (2005)
not a mainstream movie, but for a different audience
i know I'm gonna get slammed on the boards for this, but this isn't all that good simply because it makes u think that it's a reality show, u know why? because all he does is walk around and mutter to himself, but it's not all that bad, the likeness between Kurt and Blake is uncanny but this is about the movie itself not the makeup. this isn't a bad movie, that's not what I'm saying, i mean that it's not my kind of movie. don't say it's crap just say u don't like it but u ca accept it for what it is. the performances are OK but they're not Oscar-worthy, there's little speech, it's kinda boring at times, although there is one thing i can say IS crap about this movie, this for people who like violence or just didn't understand the movie itself, they could have at least shown Blake killing himself (and done it right) it would've shut the wannabe critics on the board up.the rating above is what i think it deserves
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
A horrific but excellent look at the final hours of the life of Jesus Christ
If there's one movie that I would class as the most violent movie in history, this is it. Don't get me wrong but this movie is a story for more than just Christians. It's for every race, religion and nationality. Mel Gibson really did make a masterpiece out of Christ's death. But it isn't for the weak-minded, it isn't something i'd bring my kid to see, Not just for the blood and guts, but for the glee that is on the face of the Romans as they completely mutilate Jesus' body. This movie is also kinda scary as well, especially when Satan appears to Christ at the start. Where he tempts Him, and sets a serpent on Him. There are very few movies that can effect me emotionally the way The Passion Of The Christ did. I'm far from religious, but this movie really taught me to honour Christ in some way. One of the greatest accounts of The New Testament.
Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)
an excuse for a crime thriller
I was looking forward to this movie when I heard about it, but when I saw it I couldn't help but wonder, HAS 50 CENT LOST HIS MIND? There is no way this movie was gonna work, i was actually hoping it would be good cause it was directed by Jim Sheridan. But what does an Irish man know what goes on in the hood, I am Irish myself, and could've made this work better, and I am lazier than Homer Simpson for crying out loud. Still, some parts are worth watching like the scene where 50 goes up to the Colombian and shoots him, and doesn't finish the job. The movie is really boring throughout, and 50 is not good at his performance until later on in the movie. He even managed to cry! The music, on the other hand is decent enough not 50 Cent's best work, but still good. But that said, if 50 attempts to act again, let's hope he's in a movie that won't be a complete failure.
Juice (1992)
A must-see crime thriller
This movie is by far one of the best urban crime dramas i've seen. Omar Epps is a great actor, but the show stealer has gotta be Tupac, his performance is so realistic. Bishop is one of my favourite bad guys in these kind of movies. this movie is the perfect example of Ernest R. Dickerson's skill for making movies in this mould. The scene where Bishop guns down Radamez is a thrilling scene. But the best has gotta be when Q(Epps) fights Bishop on the rooftop. Tupac's expressions are scary in some ways because of the things he does to his friends. Omar Epps is one of the most under-rated actors i've ever heard of, he plays the good guy pretty well, and kicks Bishop's ass in it. Of course this movie has one flaw, the ending is kinda dead. Where Q, after failing to save Bishop from falling to his death is told, he's got all the juice now, he just shakes his head and it shows a flashback from when Bishop was his friend, we wanna know if Q and Steel get away with robbing the liquor store!
