The Delinquent Season (2018)
Really engaging!
Shifting from his mysterious persona as Jim Moriarty in BBC's Sherlock, Adam Scott shines as Chris, an ailing father of two in The Delinquent Season. Faced with troubling news from the doctors and an unfaithful wife, Chris battles the options of fighting to keep his marriage afloat or simply letting go of the love of his life as she finds comfort in another man. While starting off at a slower pace, The Delinquent Season creates a seemingly effortless build of emotion, showcasing multiple relationships at various stages throughout the film. I was enamored by the surprisingly raw emotion that each actor was able to deliver without appearing feigned or disingenuous. Halfway through the movie, I had to remind myself that I did not actually know these people as my heart yearned to comfort each of them in their respective situations. The film touches on various real-life topics without sugar-coating them. It's an honest movie that showcases just how difficult life can be, an aspect that makes the film that much better. The Delinquent Season is the perfect movie to watch to remind all of us that each person is fighting a different battle that no one else can see.
Brampton's Own (2018)
Quite the movie!
Combining a heartfelt story with a superb cast, Michael Doneger creates a story about coming home to nothing being the same. Minor league baseball player Dustin (Alex Russell) returns home after finally hanging up his cleats to find everything has changed. His friends, family, and even the town he grew up in have moved on without him, leaving him to find out what he truly wants to do in life outside of the baseball diamond. Expecting to return to the same quiet town of Brampton, Dustin comes to find that his glory days are well in the past, with no one remembering the high school standout that brought athletic recognition to the tight-knit community. Confronted with deciding between his love of the game and the girl who got away (A Christmas Prince's Rachel McIver), Dustin realizes that the choice to be happy isn't always the easiest, which is a concept that I myself still struggle with sometimes. With beautiful scenery that captivated my attention and a script that is filled to the brim by witty banter and tangible chemistry, Brampton's Own is the movie that will leave you looking forward to your next date night.
Five Fingers for Marseilles (2017)
Clint Eastwood meets South Africa
Five Fingers for Marseilles weaves together the exciting story of a South African freedom fighter named Tau (played by Vuyo Dabula). After a rescue mission goes horribly wrong, Tau disappears to start over and create a new name for himself. Years later, he returns home to find everything drastically changed. In an effort to survive, Tau must navigate his way through dangerous gangs and a corrupt police force, learning that sometimes even those closest to you don't have your best interest at heart. Five Fingers for Marseilles combines an exhilarating Western storyline and stunning landscape shots to narrate Tau's journey to confront the ghosts of his past. As someone that loved watching Western action movies with my dad, the film captivated my attention with intense fight scenes and a heart-wrenching narrative until the ending credits finished rolling. If you're searching for an intoxicating story with a surprising finish, this movie should be at the top of your list.
Here Comes the Grump (2018)
Great for the whole family!
After being raised by his grandmother in 20th century London, Terry Dexter is struggling to keep her memory and amusement park alive. When things take a turn for the worst and the park is about to close, Terry gets transported to a magical kingdom that reminds him of all the stories his grandmother told him growing up. In order to return home, he must save the kingdom's princess from an evil wizard casting a dark gloom over the realm.
Along his journey, Terry realizes that sometimes your own personal goals must come behind the happiness of others. A Wizard's Tale features beautiful animation and a standout cast of voice actors including Toby Kebbell and Lily Collins. Jim Hecht, the writer from Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, weaves together an exciting tale of self discovery that combines a series of trials and triumphs. This is definitely a story to consider if you are looking for a children's movie, a film with fantastic visuals, or simply something to make you smile!
