The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
It's not a ghost story, it's a love story
I seriously do not understand how this show has so many bad reviews. I know the bar was set pretty high after The Haunting of Hill House which I consider to be one of the best TV shows ever made, and yes, I can understand the issue with those faked British accents, I can even admit that sometimes the pace was a little slow... But come on, it's all so worth it. I think the main issue here is that people were expecting an obvious type of horror, but to me, what makes this show so special is the way it narrates a few real things that are truly terrifying to us human beings: grief, guilt, love and oblivion. Because at the end of the day that's what's really scary, to be open to new love, to admit that we can't live trapped in memories, to accept that death is unavoidable, to realize the difference between love and possession, to face that we are all flawed, we make mistakes, we fail, we feel envy, and shame, and pain, and maybe there's beauty in all of that because we're alive ("because there's a difference between feeling alive and feeling happy"). Don't watch this casually, be ready to open yourself, and to be completely vulnerable, I guess that's how this show must be watched, and If you do so, expect your eyes to get puffy and your heart to hurt, and I promise you, it will all be perfectly splendid.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Take a trip to Hollywood
I went to see this movie last night with a friend, and even thought I think she left feeling a little disappointed, the more I think about it the more I love it. I had never seen any of Tarantino's movies but I sure will see all of them now.
Is the plot incredible? Is the storyline amazing? No. But that's not the point anyway. This movie is not about the story, but about the atmosphere. And boy, it is good. The colors, the costumes, the beautifully shot scenes, the glamour, the lights. It's slow burning because you need time to enjoy the ride. It makes you feel like you're inside the movie, absorbing Hollywood in its purest state. The cast is amazing, Leonardo Dicaprio never disappoints, and I don't remember ever seeing him in a role as funny as this one. Brad Pitt is just as good, even though I wish we learnt more about his character's past. Margot Robbie is delightful. All of the Manson Girls were fabulous delivering a creepy yet seductive feel. The climax of the movie had me crying from laughter (I swear to God until the end of the movie, people couldn't stop giggling about it). Overall I loved it, it totally made me nostalgic about a time when I wasn't even born yet.
The Tale (2018)
Shocking and brutal, absolutely superb
I've been meaning to watch this movie for quite a while. I've watched the trailer and read the sinopses. Watching it I wished I went into it without knowing what it was about just because I feel it would be even a more compelling experience.
This movie will make you feel uncomfortable, disgusted, heartbroken, dizzy... And that's why I believe it is such a good one. There will be moments in which you'll find yourself looking away. It's an horrible story seen through the eyes of a woman who is forced to face the truth about something in her past that she managed to hide from herself, as a defense mechanism. It really makes you wonder how many times you and the people around you sugarcoat things, because the reality is just to awful to accept.
Both the leading actresses were amazing, the adult Jenny, shocked, in denial, angry, heartbroken and 13 year old Jenny, confused, broken, innocent, trying to cope with something no child should have to.
It's shocking and brutal. It will leave you feeling sick to your stomach, and it will be completely worth the watch.
Harlots (2017)
Deliciously outsanding, so much more than sex
A few days ago i found myself bored and craving a period drama, I was looking for a movie when I came across Harlots and decided to give it a go.
I was not disapointed at all. The reason why I think Harlots is so underrated is because it is a TV show about women to women. The fact that this story is about prostitutes may decieve us into thinking it will be a superficial show. Well we couldn't be more wrong about that, and the fact that that idea still crosses our mind is exactly the reason why a show like Harlots was needed. Centuries after this story we still find ourselfs judging other women based on their sexual past.
If you are watching this show in hope to see some silly prostitutes with no brains then you might as well give up. The characters are sublime, interesting, smart, strong women.
As the show went on i found myself falling in love over and over again with Charlotte Wells, she's simply superb. You can't help but love the forbidden love story of Violet and Amelia. And a few episodes in you'll find yourself feeling Margaret's pain and struggle of loving their daughters while managing a dangerous business. Lucy is the perfect the sweet inocent girl-next-door with a touch of a dark side. The cast is amazing and carries their characters beautifully through the story. (The dresses are breathtaking, may I add).
This show is seductive, smart and deals with important timeless issues. So grab on a cup of tea and a blanket and get ready to binge watch Harlots. I promise, it's so much more than sex.
