The Book of Negroes (2015)
Worth the Six Hours
Like others have said here, I got a good bit of new information from this series, that I didn't know about before. I've always liked Ms. Ellis, especially in The Mentalist. There was a great deal of subtle artistry in her makeup as she aged. I thought the story flowed very well. But honestly, whoever cut the series should get a new pair of scissors. Maybe the network cut it so sloppily for commercials? It was completely distracting. Other than that, I was fascinated with the set direction, costumes, locations and thought the supporting cast was very good. I'd like to read a bio of Ms. Diallo now. Ridiculous that we have to write ten lines for a review. Blah.
The Switch (2010)
A charming movie
Smartly written, well cast, engaging story. What more could you want from a "romantic comedy"? Laughing at Jeff Goldblum and crying at little Thomas Robinson was a pleasure. Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston are two of the most appealing and enjoyable film stars around. Bateman's character was completely believable and the dialogue was witty and intelligent. I never felt as if I were being patronized during this film. The only problem in the script for me was Juliette Lewis' character. She's a good actress, but why on earth are "best friends" always eccentric and annoying? Are they there just to make the main character more attractive? Oh, well, a small complaint. I highly recommend this movie.
Brick (2005)
A lot better film than anything else around right now
Looking for a more interesting movie experience? Try "Brick". The cast is effective, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lukas Haas. (The music is all over the place, which keeps your attention from wandering.) The story is well crafted and the language is, for a blissful change, smart and f-word free. Wow, teenagers really can talk in complete sentences! And some of those sentences made me laugh out loud. You may have to listen carefully, but it's worth it. And then you can go for coffee later and try to think of all the old classics it brings to mind. Or you can just go home and congratulate yourself on having chosen a good movie to see.
Quite a nice experience and worthy of prizes won.
