Mermaid Down (2019)
Visually Interesting Cinema
Mermaid Down is compelling, artful and visually beautiful. The premise and script employ dynamic out-of-the-box thinking and the results are incredibly engaging. The production design and locations make this film look like it had a really high budget. It's hard to make a film that
depicts what is going on in someone's mind and this accomplished that in a way that was authentic. This filmmaker is someone to watch for sure. The score is incredibly moving as well. The acting is nuanced and natural. Most of all, the world is set up from the very top in a way that suspends disbelief, taking us on an incredible ride.
I highly recommend!!!!!
Back to Berlin (2018)
Impactful
A very moving and powerful documentary that is both an emotional journey and a physical one. Has amazing personal accounts and archival footage that is really emotional. The statistics of people being sent to their deaths is staggering. The resistance accounts are heroic. It's an impactful movie and timely because of all the hate that has been cultivated for political in America and beyond. The riders are so easy to love and relate to. I cried with them.
Thrasher Road (2018)
Well crafted indie delight
This movie takes us on a journey through imperfect relationships and soul healing moments of reckoning. It's a thesis on the power of second chances. Well-crafted emotional moments. Great transitions and use of music and really well paced. Universally relatable themes and something that everyone can identify with in this movie. Very sweet indeed.
When the Fever Breaks (2019)
Draws you in right away!
Great indie flick that hits the ground running. Keeps up a great pace with lots of good action and scares. The acting is great too. Well directed, really enjoyed it! I would recommend this movie and especially if you love zombies.
Greatland (2020)
Visually Amazing
Greatland filters 2020 through the lens of satire and does a fantastic job of keeping me on the edge of my seat wondering what I will see next. Great performances and the production design is especially fantastic. The post apocalyptic landscape explodes in technicolor visuals that are quite dazzling. It reminds me of Smiley face by Gregg Araki meets Zardoz and Rue Paul's Drag Race. Who doesn't love that!
Paranormal Attraction (2020)
Good horror
The characters are very likable. Good acting all around. Nice surprises and plot twists. The music is very effective and well done. Some of the bloodier moments are very believable. Well done!
Las Vegas Story (2015)
Love me some Eric Roberts
I have been a long time fan of Eric Roberts and he did not disappoint in this movie. Sex workers face such a stigma in our society so it is nice to see an on screen depiction that doesn't feed the sterotype. This movie finds the humanity in the spiritually bankrupt landscape of Las Vegas. This film is full of great moments and nuance.
The Berlin Bride (2019)
Visually interesting
A twisted visually compelling film. I found it to be quirky and oddly charming. The narrative did not spoon feed you so it kept my attention. Very interesting character actors to be sure! I like that there wasn't a bunch of verbal exposition.
Older (2020)
Beautiful movie
Wow, emotionally impactful, well edited and beautiful to look at. This movie really sucked me in. Great relationship drama and commentary on adulting. Well acted and directed. Makes me want to move to New Zealand! Kudos all around.
Sweet Sunshine (2020)
Sweet and Inspiring
I actually enjoyed parts of this more than "A Star Is Born". There are moments that feel more authentic. It's a very well shot, well done production. The lead actor is easy to connect with. Some of the story may not have flowed, but overall I thought it was a great indie film with incredible music and direction. I found it to be inspiring.
The Stalker (2020)
Call back to eighties horror
This film really reminds me of my favorite eighties horror movies like The Lost Boys and Lady Terminator. The score is really good -- pulsing electronic. And i love the retro title graphic. If you love exploitation and grindhouse, this is the movie for you. I really appreciated all it's nuances in the genre!
The Stand Up Doll (2019)
Heart Warming Octogenarian
In our youth obsessed culture, we really miss out on the lessons we can learn from our elders and plus they can be darn funny. Maybe it's that they have no filter or don't feel the need to be indirect. There's a lightness to Risa and a wisdom that radiates from her. Having lived through the Holocaust, Risa is the embodiment of strength. There is so much to be learned from these survivors as their precious time on earth becomes short each passing year. Filmmaker Evelyn Werzoza draws parallels to her own life that are both interesting and compelling. Great doc!
Into the Void (2019)
Very Relatable
Having to find one's way through uncharted territory is so relatable right now. In the wake of the pandemic, I could really identify with the kind of conflict the lead characters were faced with. Relationships are hard in general and even harder under these kind of circumstances. Very appropriate viewing for these times. Nice work from the actors too. I wonder how long we will be mired in the void!
Risen: The Story of Chron 'Hell Razah' Smith (2020)
Fantastic documentary
This documentary was really eye opening for me. I knew a lot about eighties rap music, but was not so well versed in the 2000's so it was so interesting to follow the journey of this artist. And what an amazing journey at that! The inspiring way he leads his life is uplifting even though what he went through and is still going through is so difficult and challenging. I had never even heard of the Sunz of Man and it was fascinating to me that their lyrics were about biblical stories as well as social issues. Personal struggle told in a compelling and visually interesting way. Well done! My kind of movie for sure.
Bugs: A Trilogy (2018)
Gave me the heebie jeebies
Director Simone Kisiel takes us on a twisted ride through the psyche in different stories that activate the most primal of fear. For me personally, I am so squeamish about bugs and bed bugs in particular. this film does not disappoint! I really like the gothic design of the sets and lighting in the first installment, well done! Great tension and suspense throughout. Creepy and unnerving!
All I Want (2017)
Fantastic Indie Film
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It has such a relatable approach to the complexities of relationships that I kept thinking "that's my life." I really identified with the protagonist and the journey of her marriage. And I really feel like I have been to THAT party! So much can happen in one night and this story took me on quite a ride. I got choked up at the end, truth be told. Really loved this movie. I could not stop watching!!
What Love Looks Like (2020)
intersecting stories of love and life
I am a huge fan of stories that are interconnected. I found the film to be very romantic and full of real relationship complexities. Reminds me a lot of my early twenties and trying to find that perfect love. Touching, sweet and funny, the movie speaks to what it is to be single and ready to mingle!
Perfect Feet (2019)
Wow very cool doc
As a person who has battled foot issues my whole life, this documentary covers a lot of ground and is very illuminating. Well crafted and entertaining, Calvin Harris takes us on quite a journey -- through feet. My favorite segments were the robotic feet and the history of feet binding, even though it was hard to watch. Great imagery and production value. A great documentary on a very unlikely and unexplored subject!
Polaris (2016)
Visually compelling cinema
With beautiful imagery and inherent complexity, this film is mesmerizing. Soudabeh Moradian really brings us into the world of ptsd through a female perspective. It is a very forward thinking piece about a relationship and personal struggle told through the point of view of a woman. I appreciated the power of female bonding that I experienced in this film. I found it to be compelling, relevant and refreshing.
Purdah (2018)
Breathtakingly beautiful
This film is so visually beautiful and touching I can't stop thinking about it. It has such a cinematic feel. The shots are so artistically composed and it feels like I am watching a narrative film or real life experience rather than a documentary. Perhaps that is because the interviews are so artfully done. No talking heads here, just real honesty coming from the subjects. The story is uplifting and speaks to women striving for self empowerment in patriarchal societies around the world. Purdah is filled with hope at a time when we need it most. The music is also so fitting. So well done!!!
Unlawful Justice (2018)
A must see!!!
Wow, such a relevant and important film that speaks to where we are as a country. This film touches on the crisis facing American society- the mass incarceration of poor people. The criminal justice system is broken and this movie shows how we systemically got to this point. I love how all the characters were fully developed and were presented with three dimensionality. No one is inherently bad or good, but a mix of both, and how that speaks to how each action is motivated. The directing is excellent, as is the acting. I love movies like this.
The Evil Down the Street (2019)
Good and Creepy
I love anything that involves a Ouija Board - always scares the crap out of me and this movie delivers. It has a nice amount of scares well paced throughout the movie. A great take on the haunted house/demonic possession themes, it's a dark ride through the psyche. Nothing quite like watching a family unravel and these characters are fascinating to watch. The music was also really well done. The director did a great job creating suspense and tension.
Stadium Anthems (2018)
Slick and cool!
Nevermind that it's funny -- this movie's visuals are amazing! Very adept filmmaking and fine performances all around. Director Scott Brown packs a punch as he satirizes the music industry. And it reminds me of some of the characters I met in eighties hollywood when hair bands reigned supreme. It's as though the subjects of "Behind The Music" came back to life (or relevance) and got what they deserved.
The music is really good in this movie (even though it's comedy) and I love director's choices in costumes and set design. Good quality stuff and a great depiction of a time in history of the music industry that may never happen again at quite that over the top level of fame and fortune.
