The Pearl (2004)
Could have been a good movie
The movie was interesting as far as the story goes. Unfortunately, the acting and some of the plot devices which attempted to pull the movie together and to give the viewer some relationship with the characters were so pathetic and contrived that it literally made me laugh. This is the type of movie which would have made a great episode of Mystery Science 2000. Some of the action scenes were embarrassing, the idea that a man and his wife with a newborn child could go trudging through the desert with no provisions. Please, if you watch this, enjoy it as a comedy. Otherwise, you will have to turn it off about 20 or 30 minutes in. I am sure that no one will ever read this review because this movie is so poor I doubt anyone would waste their time like I have.
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Well made, great story
I didn't think Hollywood was capable of showing Capitalism in a positive light. This movie and story is inspiring, motivational, and actually believable. To me, the message was that a man with enough hope, a positive outlook, and determination can accomplish absolutely anything.
What I have come to expect of the entertainment industry in America is the message that that everyone needs a helping hand, socialism is good, and nobody is capable of succeeding alone. It's true that we need each other in life, but the message in this movie is that YOU are responsible for yourself. You can succeed if you try hard enough. This is a capitalist's story. There is nothing wrong with making money. Happiness is not an entitlement, but everyone is free to pursue it.
The chemistry between Will Smith and his child is completely obvious, and Will Smith really turns in his best performance IMO. The acting and on-screen chemistry is what upgrades this movie from a TV Family movie special into a true world class production.
This movie is stressful to watch, but is very rewarding. Personally, I recommend it highly!
V for Vendetta (2005)
Anti Christian, Pro Terrorist propaganda
Honestly, the movie was pretty entertaining aesthetically. But movies carry more than just aesthetic value. This movie was more about a message that America is on a path to destroying the world as we know it, and the result will be an ultra intrusive police state. Particularly sickening was the line about sacrificing a building for some hope. What tripe. Entertaining? Yes. Good movie? NO WAY.
This story would never have flown if it were set in the US, say DC, NYC, or Philly instead of London. The theme is the same. Bush is a liar, gays are wonderful, Christians are evil, Terrorists are freedom fighters.
I had already read some of the reviews. I knew there were concerns about this being a pro-terrorist movie, but I couldn't help but purchase a ticket to see it. I loved the Matrix trilogy. I wish I could take my money back now. Do not waste your money on this film.
