Unfrosted (2024)
Made me laugh, it's written to be silly.
All the Rotten Tomatoes crowd are obviously not ready for something as silly as this from Jerry Seinfeld. Take it for what it is. It's a farce. It's meant to be campy with slick puns and 60's references to how we grew up with our cereal and milk. The sheer number of talented people who attached themselves to this project should tell you it was worth the effort. Jim Gaffigan is hilarious and spot on. Thomas Lennon, Melissa McCarthy kills, Seinfeld plays his character perfectly. I wanted to be one of the kids dumpster diving for leftovers. My take is to enjoy the movie. That's why they made it. Out.
Expats (2023)
Opportunity Missed
Nicole Kidman, Jack Huston, Sarayu Blue star in this oh so boring melodrama about US citizens living in Hong Kong. Got all the cliches of a soap opera. Misspent youth, failed marriages, adulterous relationships, judgmental mothers, missing children, you name it. The brilliant actors I mentioned at the beginning deserved better. I gave Expats all the time it deserved before I sent it to the "watch later... maybe" list. Too much bare your soul dialogue, with no real resolution. I was sooo looking forward to watching this series and to come away disappointed is an understatement. All I can say is I gave it a shot and have no desire for a second season.
Masters of the Air (2024)
Incredible Cinematography Great Storylines A great watch.
Warning: SPOILERS. Anything produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is bound to be epic. The story of the 100th Bomber Group stationed in England during World War Two. Well cast with the exception of Austin Butler. Somehow, I got the feeling we were watching Elvis fly a B-17 into France and Germany on bombing runs. He constantly had that upper lip quiver as he barked commands to the crew. Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle were spot on. Death and destruction were highlighted throughout the series. Impossible bombing raids, flying through constant barrages of enemy flak, and having to dodge Luftwaffe fighters saw the deaths of main characters. On one particular day, the group saw the loss of 9 of the 22 crew that launched giving it the nickname "The Bloody Hundredth." So, strap in, get ready for your favorite characters to die in action, or get captured after bailing from a crippled B-17. You will not regret watching this show. Bring the tissues.
Darby and Joan (2022)
Can't Go Wrong
Greta Scacci, she's British. Bryan Brown, he's Australian and a retired cop. They run into each other in the back country and team up to solve crimes. These fine actors make this an endearing drama. Other veteran actors like Damien Garvey, Anna Graham, John Waters, Jolene Anderson, Heather Mitchell make up a pretty Terrific cast. They break up theft rings, drug runners, all while traveling through Australia. The dog named Diesel is a herding dog with special abilities. Greta Scacci plays Joan. She is looking to find out why her ex husband wasn't in Spain but in Australia. This is a fun series with a stellar cast and great scenery. I can't wait to see if there will be a season two.
Blonde (2022)
2 Hours 47 minutes of streaming bandwidth I'll never get back.
Ana de Armis does her best to save the film. Her character is believable. Some of the relationship stories left you with questions like...where did he go? So, a spoiler alert. She dies in the end, an hour and a half later than she needed to. Some of the scenes were "conceptual." While cerebral, they continually interrupted the flow of the movie. I had to take a break an hour and a half in. We were made to guess when her relationships ended. We knew why, but one scene she was married to Joltin' Joe, the next, where did he go? Didn't know she had a dog until she was near death. The director should take a course in filmmaking. Use of black and white was effective although. Great touch. Anyway, two thumbs down.
Is It Cake? (2022)
D list celebrities
If the best you can do is grab Fortune Feimster, Mikey Day, and Bobby Moynihan for a really stupid baking show, all you need is one episode to know it's a loser. Mikey Day hosts. Bobby Moynihan is a judge. Loren Michaels name is nowhere to be seen. He usually produces anything with SNL cast members. What does that tell you? This was a one show no mo for me.
The Starling (2021)
I had high hopes.
Kevin Kline is the best thing about this movie. He never disappoints. The frozen veggies on the bruises is a tired cliché. Who has that much frozen corn in the freezer for two people? I can attest to the behavior of Starlings. They are dirty birds. Very messy and will leave droppings wherever they perch. And, nothing in the store is 5 cents. Skip the movie.
Them (2021)
Violent and horrific.
If you want non-stop racial violence and savagery you've come to the right place. I feel there's a way to tell the story of a black family moving into an all white neighborhood that doesn't include the predictable stereotypes. Oh, and that's what this does. Stuffing a baby in a pillow case and swinging it like a centrifuge and slamming it into a wall was not predicted. Neither was burning children in an oven. So, if you like this kind of show, you're in luck.
