Faan se trein (2014)
Only a beautiful perfect movie if you have the appreciation of the times and culture
Sadly this movie will never have the rating it deserves because so much is lost if you watch it in another culture with subtitles. One complained about the overuse of the Christian faith, yet that was the context of the culture especially so around that time. The subtitles would never do the original language justice so it's understandable that it would be perceived by the less perceptive as trite. All considered, when you end your dribble by saying 'cuz' instead of 'because' you end up only aging yourself as a modern day teen and rating your own review 4/10, if that. The movie is true to South African historic culture, the language, nuance, etc. Normally when we review foreign movies we attempt to compensate for our own ignorance about that specific culture. I hope people will see it from that point of view. It's really a beautiful movie from story, acting, sound, cinematography, directing.
Brothers (2009)
Just swap the brothers
Loved the movie. All I would have done as the casting director was swap the brothers. Jake imho would have played a better role as the soldier and spider man would have been better for the other brother's role. Other than that the movie isn't too slow or fast paced. I feel they could have given more time to the time spent captives in Afghanistan. Perhaps given a nod to the futility of fighting pointless wars that have no bearing on national security just to put money in the hands of a political elite, but that wasn't this movie's goal. Also, they could have made a bit more of a meal about the emotional drama of losing him and then him basically coming back from the dead. You know, show the emotion of each family member as they realise he's not dead.
Mary Magdalene (2018)
Good acting and costumes, but boring
This movie tries hard to tick the feminist and race boxes required in our culture today. Also it portrays Jesus as a constantly sad, unsure, almost pathetic figure and it's just generally boring to watch.
It's a pity because the acting, the costumes, the setting etc. are good.
Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal (2012)
A real "page turner" - Highly recommended
Despite occasional production values that could be higher and it being quite obvious, especially during explosion scenes, that this was fairly low budget, I simply cannot give this anything less than a 10 and my highest recommendation because it does what a series is supposed to do, make you want more, and make you want it not to end.
Andrés Parra as Pablo Escobar is absolutely exquisite. I honestly cannot remember when last I've been so convinced by a character. You don't doubt for one second that he is Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria throughout the 74 episodes he doesn't slip up once. I wish he acted in some main stream movies because I would watch them all. The other actors were excellent too but Parra really deserves to be singled out.
The writers managed to pay suitable homage to the victims of Escobar without overdoing it and they show the devastating emotional impact on families which really communicates the heartbreak effectively and keeps you from becoming too fond of Escobar. The series goes into a fair amount of detail as you would expect considering who the project leaders were.
As mentioned before the budget was clearly low. They use the same music throughout the 74 episodes, for example, and considering there are a number of helicopter scenes (so they had money for that), they really could have spent a bit extra for some variety there.
Really overall this was incredibly entertaining and well done and my compliments to all involved in making it.
Kindergarten Cop (1990)
Underrated. Just such fun entertainment
This really deserves a better rating. Such a cute classic that doesn't take itself too seriously. Offers a better story than the rehashed garbage the Ashkenazi's are coming up with in the 2000's.
Greyhound (2020)
The best thing since Band of Brothers
Tom Hanks just has a way of telling the WW2 stories that is utterly captivating. When the movie finished I mentioned to my mates that I wished it was longer and they all agreed. A 10 x 1 hour mini series like Band of Brothers would have been even better. I waited for this movie to be released for months and when I finally watched it I was sorely disappointed... because it ended.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Love or hate it seems
Seems some love and some hate this movie. Personally I stopped it halfway. Sandler was as always brilliant but I just didn't find this entertaining. I don't watch movies to be stressed or struggle to keep up keeping track. That's not my idea of entertainment. But each to his or her own.
The Family Man (2000)
My favourite
This is in my top 10 movies of all time. If family is important to you, you will love it too. It's a romantic drama, not really romantic-comedy-drama as some list it. Excellent acting by the entire cast and this movie put Téa Leoni on the map for me. Highly, highly recommended.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Go woke go broke, proven once again
This line pretty much sums up the movie and why it bombed at the box office:
"You are not the mother of some man who saves the future. You are the future."
This movie's box office performance is a classic case of social justice meeting actual justice. There's nothing to see here. Great graphics which is what the 3 stars are for. Another failed attempt at making female kick ass characters, capable of easily taking on a room full of burly men. It just breaches suspension of disbelief from the start and fails for the same reason male sport is so much more popular than female sport. And this movie's performance at the box office once again proves it. Pity that Schwarzenegger sells his legacy to this SJ nonsense. When will movies makers get back to entertaining us instead of trying to teach us bloody lessons?
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Ok as a stand alone series. Mistake was to call it Star Trek.
I was going to give it 4 stars simply because the CGI is incredible and it's quite watchable as a standalone series. But since IMDb insist on giving it 7 stars I need to do my bit. It's ok as a standalone but once they added the Star Trek context it was always going to be judged in that context and in the ST context it's absolute garbage.
Personally Im not a fan of how they were more focused on being politically correct than actually finding interesting and engaging characters and writing quality storylines. I agree with those critics who say this desperation to be super politically correct gender and race wise doesn't work for me. Nothing against women - Janeway was awesome - this cast just isn't. Can't they just cast the right people and leave their political agenda at the door. Also this tough guy attitude studios are trying to give women in movies and series generally is part of a 3rd wave feminist agenda that I can't help but laugh at... Anyway I won't be watching past episode 2.
Lastly, more generally, I hate how the rebooting movies completely crap on long time fans with their alternate timeline. Not necessary to reboot the franchise.
