The Marvels (2023)
Brutal to watch
Two female leads with zero personality trying to be offset by an overzealous and envious teenager is just a bad mix. Mix in a villain with a weak backstory and also zero personality and this is what you get! The end credits might be the only part of this worth watching if I'm being honest. Marvel has lost something in the ability to storytell. I didnt feel any connection to these characters and really don't care to see what comes next for them. The writers really tried to throw everything against the wall with singing, dancing, cats, along with disappearing air, water, and suns. It didnt help at all. This movie misses the mark completely.
How did we go from Captain Marvel taking on Thanos and his army to needing this oddball team up to take on a single villain? Even aside from the entanglement nonsense trying to nerf the powers to make this somewhat possible, it's a weak attempt to justify the team up.
Do better Marvel.
Carrie Pilby (2016)
Really enjoyed this hidden gem!
Glad I found this movie showing on Netflix. I saw Nathan Lane in the preview trailer and decided it was worth watching and I am glad I did. Even though it wasnt highly recommended based on my other movie interests, I loved it! When I looked it up on IMDB, I was absolutely shocked at how little it made in the box office.
This was the first time I had seen Bel Powley and I thought she was terrific as the lead actress! Nathan Lane was superb in a supporting role and the two of them played well off of each other throughout. It's a great story about life and not having all the answers but leaving yourself open to all that comes with it.
Love in the Villa (2022)
Give it a shot as a light rom com. Ignore the hate.
This is definitely a light, easy to watch rom com. No, you don't need a box of tissues to watch and that's fine with me and predictability occurs in most movies so ignore the hate on that too. The comments mentioning the mismatch of actors miss the point in the awkwardness of it all. They aren't supposed to look like the perfect pair and not everyone does or should look that way.
The supporting cast brought a great comedic element even if stereotypical. The scenery was great and you dont have to be a romeo and juliet fan to appreciate the story. Maybe the movie isn't for everyone but it doesn't deserve the slander.
Boss Level (2020)
Painful to get through
This movie is all over the place. We expect a level of repetition but this was way over the top and not at all meaningful. If it wasn't the same scene, it was the same line being repeated and offering no value to the storyline or even comedic relief. Mel Gibson drones on and on. The supporting female actress is unmemorable. If you want to see Frank Grillo with his shirt off, then this movie is for you. If you actually like science fiction and time travel movies, there are way better choices than to suffer through this. Go watch Edge of Tomorrow, Next, or Groundhog Day. If you've seen those, watch them again and be glad you didn't watch this.
