Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Pulp Fiction Meets Deadpool
Although I had slightly higher expectations, seeing all the praise on how the action is like John Wick's or how it is very similar to Deadpool, I still find this to be a great movie. The action isn't as near as John Wick's but aren't cheap quick shots that many action fight scenes love to do to save time; It was very much like Pulp Fiction and Deadpool, a narrator narrating different pieces of the story for different characters not so much in chronological order; but this movie doesn't catch as much of the humor that Deadpool had to offer(not to say that's a bad thing). The style of the movie reminded me of Suicide Squad, with it's colorful appeal and all, and the acting was fantabulous. Deserves a 7.4/10 IMDb, 85 percent Rotten Tomatoes, 70 percent MetaCritic.
Joker (2019)
One of the Greatest Performances in the DC Universe
This Taxi Driver-esque film is a fun entertaining roller coaster ride with Joaquin Phoenix taking the mantle as one of the best portrayals of one of Gotham's most terrorizing criminals. This film delivered an amazing color palette and serves as a great slow-burner psychological thriller that brought thrills and chills to the audience in all the right ways. This will be one of the most famous films in America and will be just as popular as A Clockwork Orange was back in the 70's. Quite morally wrong yet so intriguing, this is one of the most interesting of films seeing how the film puts us in the shoes of Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill person on the brink of madness. With it's deliver of an amazing cast, soundtrack, and cinematography, this is one of those rare films that feel like the 70's. If only it had lasted an extra half hour or so because I honestly wanted more. Shorter cuts on long length scenes may sound like i'm pulling the horror away from the movie but I feel it'd be best if they cut some scenes a little shorter than others just to move the story along. Even though it's quite shocking, I still believe this movie can't surpass films such as Requiem For A Dream or The Dark Knight, it's still one of the best character studies out there but I think it deserved a 94 percent with Dark Knight at 97, and Requiem with 98. Very up there in my personal favorite films so don't be disappointed if you had just read my whole review.
Crawl (2019)
Sam Raimi's Disappointment
I awaited for this film really excited and walked out disappointed. Through illogical logic, okay acting, and pointless scenes this film goes down as a bad film to put in the book. I love Sam Raimi, his work in The Evil Dead, Drag Me To Hell, and Spiderman he never failed to amaze me on how well he works in different genres. He loves to make you cringe with gorey scenes which is the only think I liked about this film. Though critics raved for this film I disliked it very much due to its very slow pace. It went to places for sure but very very slowly. There were scenes that might've made you have hope and then the mood would be killed almost immediately. A failed swimmer somehow outran the alligators so many times almost getting killed by the jaws of death yet somehow survived alot of it and how the hell did the father survive through all that pain?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am impressed he could even walk without feeling five tons of tension. The acting was I guess good, except, like every horror movie, when there is the pain factor actors don't seem to make you feel what they feel. In real life if you get bit by a gator you are gonna be wincing walking through the water and swimming and all that, when you get bit and you are trying to outrun something the pain I'd gonna feel so bad you are gonna wish you'll never have been born, and when you get bit it's gonna be so much pressure you won't want to move(unless you got adrenaline).
Us (2019)
If you ignore some of it's unanswered logic then it's fantastic!
Us goes down in history as one of the best horror films in history, going on the level of Scream, A Nightmare on Elm St., Zombie Land, and It Follows. The story is broken down simple, a family goes to their vacation home only to realize their doppelgangers are out to kill them. There are many iconic scenes in this film such as the line used when the doppelgangers appear at night or the final scene of the film. It's score is groundbreaking and drives the mood while the acting powers the emotion, dialogue keeps you hooked, comedy will make you smile, and smart decisions will make you love this film. There are many plot holes that I don't understand fully yet that I don't want to get into but after I shrugged it off I realized I'm standing in front of a masterpiece that could be watched time after time without getting too bored. Definitely worthy of a watch and is great entertainment for kids 13+.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Not the best of story telling, still underrated.
I am not really a fan of X Men and don't recall any of the films(besides Logan) but I can tell you that this film isn't that bad. This film is about a mutant coming to grips with her new monstrous powers following a near-fatal accident in space, wreaking havoc in her wake. This film has an okay story but I feel like it's been done before, there is a couple moments that just made me laugh(negatively) but the effects they used on almost everything seems mind-blowing, as if the sfx team attempted to pull all their hearts out into making one of the most outstanding X Men movies ever made. Though they called shortly by a Longshot it isn't to say you shouldn't watch it. From a viewpoint of someone who isn't too much of a fan of X Men there's a lot I can like about this film. The story kind of works, the effects were good, the soundtrack was good, and it's a great superhero movie between loving and hating one another.
Good Time (2017)
Good thrills and a cinematic experience!
This film has escaping, searching, and dealing with emotional ties which I really love about this film. This film leaves you on edge and takes you into the grimy streets of the east coast. As impressive as it seems it really is underrated, not being given much attention when it was released and not winning everyone's hearts with it's surrealness and it's story of a man trying to retrieve his mentally handicapped brother after a bank heist gone wrong. Worth the watch and worth your time, this film is by far one of the most impressive and saddening films in awhile and can be watched countless times without you getting bored.
Assassination Nation (2018)
Not My Cup of Tea
What happens when you add half a cup of hypocrisy with half a cup of privacy issues, mix it with a dash of teen violence, and bake with a quart of views of sociality? This film.
This movie is a straight forward and skin deep look at social justice yet fails to meet my expectations with an unsatisfying slow pace and what seems to be two acts. Like Mom and Dad, this film is only watchable bi-annually and really disappoints. Great end credits sequence though!
Don't Knock Twice (2016)
A very slow film that covers alot of ground.
5.7/10
Do all people in Europe knock twice?
After knocking on a house filled to the brim of fear because of an urban legend, a young woman seeks refuge in her mother's household from a supernatural entity, slowly realizing it followed her.
This film brews with satisfactory lore and a couple twists and turns but never seemed to satisfy my need of a great down to earth movie. This movie is watchable and okay, some mild jumpscares scattered about. There is an emotional scene that was building up, until it was annoyingly crushed from the supernatural. This movie is a slow brewing cup of red tea that hasn't enough caffeine to wake you up.
I would buy this film and recommend it to those who love IFC but just remember that it's story may be good but the pacing is slow.
Bird Box (2018)
Netflix Tried... 5.7/10
I've been hearing about this Netflix Original called Bird Box for a decent time now, spanning not only a challenge but what some people call one of the greatest films in awhile. To your dismay, I disagree.
Meet this lady who's pregnant when a strange force begins to make people suicide or go mad at a single glance at whatever the hell it is. With the force on the rise, she must live in this very very harsh environment while a series of unfortunate events begin to unfold.
I liked the pace of the half of the story that took place in the beginning of the outbreak because each scene was just as equally as fast paced as the next, but the half that takes place in the present got a little jiitered and clunky. Some parts of the present scenes seemed to slow and it's pace dramatically increased or decreased. I didn't like how there were a lot of time jumps and a lot of deaths were seemingly for nothing.
Also the ending was in a way how I predicted but the story at least tried to unfold itself in a way to keep the viewers learning what happened and why they're there in the present like that. Also I love how we never get to know about the origin of this force because, like Cam, it focused more on survival than the villain.
If it was a prequel to A Quiet Place and they altered 40 percent of the story I'd be a little more interested but the outcome would most likely be the same.
Not the worst for Netflix but it definitely isn't the best.
Aquaman (2018)
A solid story with long action sequences.
I likes James Wan's Aquaman, which on a mega-budget surprised me with a solid story and a big fish hook. The sequences were well done and it has a big enemy but the only problems were the action sequences were too long, some parts were too cheesy, and too many explosions. Maybe if they focused more on the story and had more transitions during battle sequences i'd enjoy more. I'd be down for a sequel.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
A gloomy and respectful supernatural thriller all should see!
The Haunting of Hill House is one of those slow moving series with just enough chills to keep you wanting more from the next episode.
Meet a family whose past is as gloomy as their future, their growth as characters far beyond what you'd expect. After their father receives a phone call from one of the siblings, we dive into a mindbending and stomach churning world between past, present and future.
In each episode we get to know separate chunks of the stories, separate fears and desires, separate entities that spawned from the household, and each character's story.
As the story expands so does some of the origins. Also, some episodes give a bright glint of feel as if it were apart of the book "The Shining."
As a Netflix series this is probably the best series out there(aside from Stranger Things) and should focus on a different family if they were to make a second season.
There is some minor sex scenes, brief violence and gore, and language.
Slumlord (2015)
13 Cameras feels surreal but uninteresting.
13 Cameras... Watched it on Netflix because A friend had recommended it to me and by golly it was bad.
Be introduced to a young couple in the middle of drama who go unaware of their surroundings until the last 15 minutes of the film.
This is all I really need to say.
The setting seemed believable and the stalker who watched the cameras were disturbingly creepy and weird but with all the drama playing throughout the film, the psycho only gets called out last minute.
Sure there were some interesting close calls and some weird scenes of the psycho but it never really followed through.
Also I disliked the unnecessary nudity. I know it's supposed to show how screwed up the stalker is but please I wish it was toned down.
Dolls (1986)
The 3rd Best Charles Band Productions Film!
I love Charles Band and his smooth production on the toys and dolls for each of his movies and I say, in a positive way, this movie made a solid 3rd place. First would be Tourist Trap, then Puppet Master, then Dolls.
Meet 2 punk rock chicks, a man, a couple with their daughter as they all decide to hang tight at the same house by mear coincidence. Everything seems fine until one of them goes missing, outrage from the thought that the person was attacked by dolls.
This film had great ambiance for it's enclosed creepy in the woods household that was different from the neutral grounds of the Puppet Master series. This ambiance was cold, it was stalking and very tormenting and rose my heart rate a little up during each hall scene. The doll's effects are ran smooth and their looks are just really disturbing, the deaths were fairly creative, and why does the girl look like Annabelle meets Carol Anne?
Some bad things I must say is that it had a bumpy start, a C+ start that was kinda slow and not very hooking, aside from the bear scene.
The ending was perfect and I recommend this if you are a Charles Band lover.
There's some brief language gore violence
Night of the Comet (1984)
Slow Story, Great Throwback
Night if the Comet has been one of my "top interested but don't have time to see movie" list and I am very disappointed on this film.
After a comet zooms past our planet, it awakens a small population of zombie-like humans to emerge. A small group of teens must fend for themselves for the sake of the remaining teen race.
I believe 28 Days Later took the concept from this film and that 28 Days Later is still better. This movie picks up on a great-pace of action until the comet strikes. We only get to see a handful of zombies, and with more surviving than thriving this film would've kicked ass. Because this film focused too much on 80's pop references it was fairly uneventful. Aside from the decent comedy around it the only big scene I loved about the film was when they were in that clothes store. What I very much disliked was the dream sequence scene and the fairly awkward quietness of any plot or subplot.
I believe there are 2 F-words, brief sexual references, and brief violence.
Halloween II (1981)
Slow but steady.
Creating a sequel after a smash hit has a lot of pressure on your hands. Will it be good? Will critics or the public agree? What made the first film good? This film isn't as good as the first but is still not bad.
Taking place in the same night as the first, Michael is on the hunt again, this time targeting a hospital where Laurie Strode is being taken in after a wound.
This film has a semi-fast pace and has a greater kill count. It's a typical sequel. But this film was a powerhouse, there was more to be found and there was nothing stopping Sam Loomis and Michael Myers to getting to their destination as soon as possible. And the tone kept you guessing when he'd come back, especially because it is almost constantly dark.
The negative side of this film is that it's kinda boring. The sequences for Loomis and Myers were at times too long and we needed a break from getting too deep into finding each other.
Quick review, decent film, cool tones.
Moderate nudity(for a bathtub scene), gore, and brief language
Halloween (2018)
Great soundtrack, Stays on point, very likeable
Hearing a retelling of Michael Myers following the first film was a big interest I've had since I heard of it's release, and this film blew me into category 3 hurricane windspeeds.
Follow the story of Laurie Strode, 40 Years following the tragic event of the first film, as she plays a game of hide and seek with the infamous Michael Myers, who escaped through a mental hospital's bus.
I've only seen the first 3 films and saw so many references to those films such as the kitchen knife and the masks. This film was on-task. They don't show as many in-the-moment death scenes(which flowed with the plot because it's all about the story, not all the deaths) and had a very old yet amusing score, setting the neutral boundary between the pass or fright side, making you feel what Laurie feels every step of the way. You can feel paranoia, tragedy, and loosening up. What's different from the first film is that it's not about really defending as much as yourself but the ones you love which sticks out away from the first film.
The story clicked but the beginning was too thick. The beginning act focused too much on side characters. They could've used those side characters for a greater purpose but instead were sorta left in the dust. Now the comedic sides of things were some of the positive aspects of this film but I feel like they should've been toned down a little more, also Laurie's granddaughter needs to shed more backstory and why she's so important to Laurie because we don't actually know alot about her aside from that she's Laurie's granddaughter and that Laurie cares for her.
I feel this is a fantastic thriller with bite and tone but, like every movie, isn't perfect.
Minimal F-words(one sexualized), semi-gore, super brief nudity
Venom (2018)
Doesn't Lack Bite nor Delight
Believe me when I tell you the critics must've gotten it all wrong. I haven't seen a film so great in awhile and it deserves a 7.6/10.
Fall In the world of Eddie Brock, whose lost his girl, his show, and life. He is down in the dumps for awhile until a symbiote by the name of Venom appears. The appearances begin slow, but gets progressively fast until you get to see Venom in half of each scene.
I love Venom and Eddie's character and they may not be the best duo but they win the medal for the Most Comedic, Venom cracking a variety of jokes in between the calmer moments and Eddie resisting the urge to fight back. And Riot was a hell of a lot scarier than you'll imagine(which is the main villain).
It has good acting, good cast, good CGI, and good storyline. Ignore the critics, love much.
Upgrade (2018)
It's harder, better, faster, stronger!
For the creators of Saw I was really impressed, not because of the gore effects on this film but the nice base put on the structure.
Open your eyes to this guy who is given an AI implanted into his body, making him harder, better, faster, stronger.
The basis is simple, eliminate and seek the truth to his girlfriend's death, and as uncomplicated as it sounds it is semi-complicated. It's the simplicity that makes it so good because it takes the action from Taken with a dose of discovery and a pinchful of comedy in one moderate-bloody movie.
The soundtrack worked well with every scene which made you feel what they were feeling, the story dived straight into the purpose of this film, and the camerawork was like a smooth running clock.
The only problem I can say about this film is the brief 5.4/10 slowness of act 1 but other than that this film is one of the best movies I've seen in awhile. It definitely deserves a 3-movie franchise and it has talent.
Eighth Grade (2018)
Not close to reality... But who am I to say?
Hey guys! Today's topic of this video is like the review of like this movie. It's uhhh, a little tough when your like the least most popular girl in school but uhhh, like just be someone you aren't and in the end like it might help you. See you next time, Gucci!
So you've come to this review? For a film about the last week of school in the shoes of an awkward wanna be cool girl. This problematic premise wasn't as strong as I had hoped and it really was just disappointing.
I'll be doing something different, going major scene by major scene.
So act one followed our protagonist obtaining one of those "from the past" boxes with some Hobby's and interests she used to like.
Also there is a weird scene about sex anatomy and some kid is jacking off while the woman on the video says the cringey lines of "it's gonna be lit," and a scene if a teacher dabbing(why?).
She is clearly quiet and socially awkward and is invited by this girl's mother to a b day party. At the b day there are some kids playing at a pool including the b day girl's brother and this one kid she crushes on, she has a brief encounter with him later on and then they unbox the presents. Doing the typical socially awkward kid she presents her with a card game which the girl clearly gets confused by.
Zooming on they do this weird school shooting play(?) Or drill(?) And she is staring at her crush. This girl near our main character then says he is a jerk and that he had tried to ask for nudes to this one girl.
This girl being stupid during a drill tries to seduce him with the thought that she has nudes and he gets interested.
Then the focus shifts to her shadowing a senior and then later on she decides to meet with her. They're having a good time when her father shows up to which the protagonist yells that she can get a ride.
She gets a ride and is all alone with this guy to which they eventually play a game of truth or dare. He dares her to take off her shirt after she says she'd hit 2nd and 3rd base. She says no and goes home crying.
The next day she goes on a dinner date with the b day girl's brother and they enjoy each other's company.
Then there's a scene of her older and it's basically another "from the past" video. The end.
Firstly, theres this one scene where the father walks into her room and she throws the phone at the wall, breaking her phone. Who in their right mind breaks their phone over there parents walking in? All she did was going on Instagram past her bedtime.
Secondly, I don't know a single girl who's that socially awkward.
Third, why would she lie about her sex life.
Fourth, I heard that this was written or directed by a father of a daughter(so what I got was that what guys are only in for is sex).
And fifth, it had killer tunes.
No sex videos use those expressions. No one freaking masturbates in public. No one is that awkward. The end.
Hell Fest (2018)
Michael Myers w/ Dark Ride
This film's trailer made it look like "wow!" But the movie gives you the thought of "wow?" In Hellfest a group of teens enter a moving horror park attraction when nothing is what it seems, starting when a stranger starts stalking them.
The beginning of this film has a rocky start presenting us with a little dullness and a slow build up of characters as they "enter the depths of hell!!!" The talking is as loud as the backround music and they really don't go anywhere for like 10 minutes. Towards the second act some likeable and ackward characters begin to vanish and that's when the pace picks up a little bit. When things get down the pace is the equivalent to Evil Dead 2 and things start to get a little more intense and overall it had a Michael Myers joins an amusement park feel. It also seemed to follow the first Puppet Master, the killings go unnoticed until last minute which I very much dislike. Also there was a ridiculous amount of false scares which takes the fun out of it. But what I did like about the film is the rise of heat in the music when things start to seem to settle. The killer was overall an interesting killer and it begs the question on if a sequel will come soon. I definitely would like to see a improved sequel.
The Toybox (2018)
Getting the whack on track.
The Toybox is an interesting 2018 indie film that basically mixes "haunted house" with "the hills have eyes" with an old faithful tune that plays an eerie Melody. Firstly the story wasn't that bad and keeps you on edge occasionally but the bad news it has horrid acting. This was a quick review but I'd love for a sequel to happen so I can see what poor humans are next victims
Friend Request (2016)
It seems to try to be The Ring but with some originality.
This isn't my favorite movie but it isn't the worst. You can admire almost the entirety of the film for it's creativeness, but what the film lacked was some motivation. Sure the origins throughout this movie expand at a good rate and the jumpscares and violence seemed great but during some times of the film I just couldn't stand it. Maybe it's just me, but having someone unfriend you isn't the end of the world! But see for yourself and have you decide. I didn't go into much detail because I forgot a lot of it but I have a copy so I'll get right to it and possibly get back to you!
The Nun (2018)
Better than Annabelle but yet a major step-down
When I heard they were making this movie I was pretty interested, especially because The Nun seemed so creative and tormentful, but when I saw the trailer I sort of gave half of my hopes up. The movie didn't help though, either.
I'll start with the goods and then the bads.
I must say it did have a few good jumpscares and moments that leave you on edge, especially the beginning of the film that had attempted to set the standards; and the entirety of the movie felt mystical in some ways. And I understand why it had seemed so different from the other Conjuring Films, it had more spirituallity which meant we'd be diving deeper into the realm of darkness than a haunted house, possessed doll, or possessed girl. It was Valaks realm, which meant she could tamper and play with them all she wanted, and all I can say in the least context is that it is later revealed exactly what went down.
What I very much was displeased about is how and why the woman has her powers and the origin story of Valak. I can't say much about the origin story but it seemed to much in fantasy than reality, also in the film the main woman protagonist has a supernatural ability that isn't explained. And overall a lot of the film felt dull and slow and lacking a reason to keep going with the movie, presenting us with a constant message that "she is there" but only showing us glimpses of her from time to time for no reason until the climax(so I guess that's a little on the bright side).
By the way there is quite literally almost no bad language like all the Conjuring Films, no sexuality or nudity, brief violence/gore, and a jumpscares warning for those of weak hearts.
I believe this film can learn from it's mistakes like Annabelle did and move on with another sequel focusing on a new cast of characters with a new problem to pose. I will be waiting if a Nun sequel ever hits theaters and hope to see more from The Conjuring Universe.
Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (2018)
What the actual freak did I just watch.
Don't get me wrong I am a horror goer and have been since I first watched Silent Hill and this movie beats every one of the other films I've watched including Sinister(which I had found the most disturbing). This film takes it to another level and raises the stakes on how gorified you should be. My mouth dripped multiple times by some deaths, not because they were characters that served a point but because of what had happened to them, very violent and sadistic deaths that beats Saw by a longshot. This film was too much for me but I continued on as the film revealed some interesting stuff with cheesy effects I really enjoyed. But don't watch, just please don't show it to your friends or family because you can't unsee what you will witness. This is the one film I am considering on buying but may not because of how cruel it is, but it's moral is true: bad things happen to innocent strangers.
Slender Man (2018)
Worse than Ju On the Grudge
I'm a big Ju On hater and when I tell you it's worse it is the worst. The film was continuous on the scares which was good but there wasn't anything else in the film which made it powerful. Like the scares were repetitive but they were equally as scary which made it dull cause the scares in the film weren't really scary and the story was just about them slowly going crazy. But nothing else was present in the film but the scares and them slowly going crazy, no real other subplot that would make you want to keep going.
I heard the people behind the movie wanted to shoot for an R rating but they couldn't cause a company or something wanted it to target a teen audience and also how some scenes were cut out but if they made it R and added the deleted scenes then maybe the film wouldve felt more complete.
If they make a extended cut with over 5 minutes if new footage I'll consider buying it. It's The Grudge meets The Ring meets It.
