The Eye Creatures (1967)
Sci-fi that delivers titular creatures!
The Eye Creatures, 1965. First time seen this film sci-fi but with comedy thrown into it. About small town where a UFO comes down lands nearby. Passable stuff kinda fifty-ish type ambience!
The occupants of UFO are kinda lumpy with eyes multi re body hence the titular title of film. They make a sound when near effect. There are a number of these aliens which emerge front the UFO!
They have a weakness which I won't mention here so not to spoil it for you if you haven't seen film.
Although this sci-fi is poor I managed to watch all of it and late night too. Nothing special can recall least six films which I didn't get more than quarter through viewing as dare I say worse than this film.
Eye creatures passable in this sci-fi.
The Glow (2002)
Will give The Glow!
I watched this TVM The 'Glow' one late evening and wasn't disappointed!
NYC young couple move into a up-market apartment with a nominal rent. The premises is run by a group of retirees who are affable to say the least. These friendly and helpful neighbours also happen to be a health and fitness group.
A couple of young tenants previously disappeared from the same leased apartment. Sometime later another young couple upstairs who happen to be athletic types under plausible circumstances just seem to disappear too. Again a decidedly plausible explanation.
Portia De Rossi who is half of couple mentioned at start of review her character becomes tad curious about various seemingly odd happenings, could her suspicion about the low-rent just be a prelude of what's to come?
Dina Merrill who plays Phoebe one of the main characters of the group and Arnold her spouse played by Hal Linden just what are they up to if anything besides rest of the group?
This TVM is a drama/horror of type. It reminded me of not only Rosemary's baby but hint of Invasion of the body snatchers! But I won't spoil it for you.
Decidedly creepy, well paced, suspense too!
I rate one of the better TVMS of the type.
The Reptile (1966)
(OTHER) The Reptile
The Reptile, 1966 horror from Hammer films made back to back with The Plague of the zombies, using same sets to a degree and least two of the cast. This subtle, atmospheric horror has been somewhat neglected a tad! It sets the tone with the moors and score music adds to this quite effective horror with mysterious goings on. Deaths have occurred which the locals put down to the black death. Won't go into plot as many already have done. Just to say a large house a Dr. his manservant and the Dr's daughter who reside there and a curse which has spelt death to those unfortunate to be unlucky enough to become a victim.
Personally in my list of (monsters) which I favour, in third place I have (OTHER) by that I mean such as in this film. Something different a creature which is not mainstream but nevertheless effective. Three come to mind in this category, this horror then has such a creature!
Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953)
A&C pursue Hyde and seek!
1953 film Abbott and Costello meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - - now then I won't go into the plot much as many have already done so already. However Bud and Lou bobbies from the US have been transferred to UK to study the policing methods and such in victorian London. Now then, as such they happen upon a suffragette movement going on and intervene which subsequently lands them in trouble to say the least getting them both fired! At same time a killer is at large in Hyde Park area, least murders in area that is. As it happens Bud and Lou decide if they can catch the culprit this would go some way to redeeming themselves.
A reporter takes up with a suffragette who happens to be a girl who Dr. Jekyll (Karloff) is infatuated with to the dismay of Dr. Jekyll then. The Dr. decides reporter will have to be got rid of and the Dr. knows just the person to do it, Mr. Hyde. Foggy London, hansom cabs, victorian Street lighting, secret bookcase and passages, laboratory are just a few to add to atmosphere. A&C visual and verbal gags plus Karloff and his creepy other self hirsute Mr. Hyde give film watchable horror/comedy/drama.
This film's received quite negative feedback from critics and users alike.
Recently bought double A&C dvd which this title was main reason. Worth getting, I rate it up amongst the better A&C meet the etc etc films!
Unknown World (1951)
Down to the core!
As it happens Unknown World, 1951 film I saw not so long ago and recently read user and critic reviews alike. Most it seems are tad negative to say least! I however like film and recently bought a dvd of it. I watched it at night and found it not dull neither boring at all. In fact found it better than my previous viewing a while ago!
Some reviews have alluded to Unknown World not having any creatures no dinosaurs or such. I though didn't miss film not having such per se!
As it happens then there is a few years gap between Unknown World and Journey to the center of the Earth a film which did have mock up dinosaurs in and that film I have taped. A film which itself of course deals with subject matter hence it's titular title!
Now then, Unknown World is public domain but few dvd labelled ones are out there to buy obviously. Mine happens to be a better print than some and sound also to as well keep case!
So my rating out of ten I've taken into account the whole package as it happens.
The Ghoul (1975)
Dire effort!
I saw The Ghoul (1975) long ago in a horror film season and it was undoubtedly worst in it!
Cast fine but awful film.
Won't give it any star at all.
Daughter of the Tong (1939)
A Tong takeaway in Carney.
Daughter of the Tong (1939) I watched couple of times fairly recently a crime film that comes under less than 1 hour running time. Read few user reviews some denigrating ones there also. I'm not into crime films in general but like this one! In fact I've sent for restored version dvd. The "illustrious one" & known to her subordinates as "Carney" played by Evelyn Brent. She rules them with a iron fist!
Won't get into plot you no doubt have read already.
She "Carney" is a mysterious lady who alone carries film itself, her cool demeanour shows!
The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)
Abysmal creature feature!
The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) which was the third film of Frankenstein Hammer ones in series. I like to add in my opinion it's the worst of them, trailer was probably the best of it! Followed by Frankenstein created woman (1967) which at least was back on track better than 'Evil'.
Never really into Frankenstein films anyway myself but the last Hammer one Frankenstein and the monster from Hell (1974) was 98% poor too. Title in this one was better than film.
Only give one star and that's for trailer!
Revolt of the Zombies (1936)
Different yes - - but still has merit!
I watched Revolt of the zombies (1936) tad while ago now and purchased a 3 film treble bill dvd via Amazon. Above title being third film on disc. Other 2 titles there took a chance with as it was Revolt of the zombies I was purchasing dvd. Attack of the giant leeches (1959) & The amazing transparent man (1960).
As dvd was value price I purchased it.
Won't mention plot re Revolt of the zombies as others have gone into. But like to say even though 'Revolt' is not among the best bracket area of Zombie films it at least had some merit!
I can think of other films which I didn't get even quarter way into. Three of them horror types 'Suspira' & 'Virgin among the living dead' & 'The Entity'. Without criticism these were double bomb!
The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946)
Come into my parlour!
The Spider woman strikes back, 1946 with Gale Sondergaard is a tad better than you might suppose. Old dark house, a mystery to solve re previous female companion to Zenobia. New female being doped up, cattle which are falling prey to a strange malady! Creepy goings on in house like nocturnal sounds coming somewhere adjacent to step in closet of bedroom.
Sondergaard is fine in her part and film moves along at a steady pace!
The Strange World of Planet X (1958)
Add to your collection!
I recently purchased dvd of The strange world of planet X It was not easy to come across, available in box set but I didn't require other titles there! Amazon however had it single dvd, a few there various prices. To cut short they sold out quick, thought they'd be few left but they'd gone after couple of days so to speak! But two that were left were expensive, cheapest £37 plus other even more. I visited site again after few days of which last two dvds also gone.
Having found another site which deals with dvd films I now procured above title at modest price.
So The strange world of planet X 50s sci-fi horror is a film which didn't do well at box office particularly but once in TV circulation film gathered a cultist following!
Some have derided film re it's special effects etc but I can think of other sci-fi horrors which certainly were no better from same era!
Out of 10 stars I'm giving it 5.
The Wasp Woman (1959)
Neat sci-fi horror
The wasp woman 1959 I think is not in top 80-100 % bracket. But comes in at a respectable 47-50% bracket!
It's been much maligned by some. However in US it did regular late viewing circuit which goes to show its far from being a poor film.
Nothing to do with nuclear radiation nor from outer space here! No but science and nature mingled where sometimes unexpected results can take their course.
Also the predominantly local of a high rise building of where Janice Starlin runs her empire as a cosmetic magnate adds to its different aspect.
Susan Cabot who plays Janice Starlin does fine in her role. You know by now what plot entails presumably so I won't go into. The buzzing effect of wasps when something is going to happen later on in film helps it! Some tension builds, certain scenes at this point do give wasp woman something. Laboratory too different scenes adds interest.
Costume of the wasp woman too taken some stick re critics. But lots of films out there I won't mention here makes The wasp woman look respectable film.
What wasp woman does to victims no laughing matter, yes Susan Cabot gives fine performance.
I saw this film quite a while back but found out later was edited version running just under a hour. Now I own the uncut version dvd!
Curse of the Faceless Man (1958)
Ashes to ashes.
Curse of the faceless man 1958 I watched hours ago. B/w horror film which hadn't seen previously.
Users reviews already stated etc plot and opinions expressed!
I found myself slightly in different to film in general. The head leading lady Tina Enright played by Elaine Edwards I thought was about the best thing in film.
A few scenes with her were among the better in entire film. It was two or possibly three separate scenes with Tina Enright which had potential atmospheric plausibility!
I gave 'Curse' low 2 stars but even though poor this horror isn't a bomb!
Cry of the Werewolf (1944)
Subtle horror
Hi, I'd like to make known I'm not into Werewolf films. However 3 titles of such are a exception. Won't give titles here though in this review.
Very recently I viewed Cry of the werewolf (1944). Re plot other users have mentioned.,so I won't go into plot of film. Found film easy to view as it keeps your attention. 4 out of 10 I've given it, that may seem low but 'hey' I'm not knocking it! For me various scenes lighting and shadows etc remind me of The Cat People (1942). Something of Val Lewton effect.
Nina Foch I thought played her part effectively. She also appeared in Return of the Vampire which I have on DVD. So summoning up Cry of the werewolf is different.

Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
A must have Hammer film.
Quatermass and the pit 1967 is a film which I've watched many times. Why? Because it's the type which you don't get bored with! No need to mention film plot as many user reviews do. It has quite a tad going for it too. The casting is indeed re principle characters fine. A thought provoking sci-fi horror which is memorable. In my opinion this one would come in top TEN re Hammer films! Yes I have it on DVD.
Witchcraft (1964)
Atmosphere, creepy and memorable!
Hi it's about time the 1964 film Witchcraft was made available in the UK on DVD. Long time ago saw this one probably in a season of Horror films on a Friday night! Remember vague bits of it shot in b/w and I've read up on various reviews put forward. So quicker it comes out on DVD the better!
The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964)
A decent enough horror from Hammer.
All four Mummy films by Hammer I like. Curse with atmospheric scenes does give a quality to it. You have fog bound London to add atmosphere. Sets on film re Egyptian biz are quite good.Story so-so various characters who crop up. Then we have the Mummy itself which looks quite impressive, with scenes with Mummy in like in fog top of steps near embankment etc, scene in study where curtains are concealing it. Another scene in house where Mummy ascending stairs, menacing and quite gripping. Odd comical relief in film re certain characters. Overall film has some merit to it!
That's Your Funeral (1972)
To sum up That's your funeral is a welcome addition from the past.
At last That's your funeral film is out on DVD. Contrary to what others have wrote in negative terms about it I like it, pity series was wiped. Film did poorly at box office for some reason. Anyway film risen from ashes so to speak. Add it to your collection! Its many critics will and have belittled series and film. It is in my opinion series the forerunner for others that were to come like In Loving Memory. So there you are then.
