Lots of action... Bullock excellent
8 January 2019
A story of survival in a horrifying world in the future for a young mother trying to save her two children. Nonstop action and plot twists make this and interesting film experience.

Sandra Bullock knows how to play these roles very well. She simply has a knack for slipping into a high stress character almost effortlessly.

This type of movie does not have much character development due to the focus being on the action however this one did produce a nice character arc for Bullock. And this was satisfying to the viewer.

The failure to explain the menace leaves the viewer unfulfilled and unsatisfied however, this movie will keep you entertained for two hours.

Uplifting film of darkness and redemption
29 December 2018
As a war hero returns home from World War Two, he finds his life descend into a dizzying whirlwind of alcohol, rage and bad choices. Can he ever bounce back?

That is the premise of this Christian-themed movie, which touches on some of the most universal of human pains. Sam Hunt is a stand-out in this movie for excellent, excellent acting ... his acting lifts the entire movie.

The message of the movie is hugely uplifting as he tries to find a path forward in a life littered with PTSD trauma. PTSD victims can relate to the intensity and woundedness of his condition, which is well illustrated.

This movie has a powerful true story of God's grace even in the darkest of corners. The ultimate character arc, of course, occurs which provides hope for any who view.

An excellent movie for all to watch and be inspired!

Big action ... little character development
28 December 2018
When a mother sees her family gunned down, she unleashes the revenge monster. In movies, typically this is a male actor but it is refreshing to have a female lead playing this part.

The movie did not grab me in the first five minutes but slowly built. The last half of the movie was nonstop action with plot twists here and there.

Jennifer Garner is an excellent actress but was not given much great material to work with, in my opinion. The screenwriters baked in very little character development and that always results in shallow, cardboard characters.

The ending had a nice little plot development, which is discussable.

All in all, an OK movie to watch at home but don't expect the wow factor to be there.

The original is TOUGH to follow ...
27 December 2018
Let's face it, the original "Mary Poppins" is a tough tough tough act to follow. I did not like "Mary Poppins Returns" as much as the original but it was an enjoyable film. Emily Blunt was excellent and patterned very closely after Julie Andrews. It would have been a nice touch for the Mary Poppins character to have been expanded upon a bit but alas, the writers were perhaps afraid of upsetting the apple cart too much.

Dick Van Dyke's brief inclusion was amazing and wonderful. It lifted much of the last half of the movie.

The Banks children were great actors - Colin Firth had poor lines and was a one-dimensional, forgettable character.

All in all, this is well worth the money to see in the theater as the music is lively and creative. Slow at times, that is easy to overlook due to the iconic nature of the movie.

I give this movie a "7" because it is, well, a sequel to Mary Poppins. Enjoy!

An unfunny comedy ....
27 December 2018
Even John C Reilly and Will Ferrell cannot produce more than a couple of mild laughs in an otherwise long movie.

Comedy is the ultimate justice, it's either funny or not, and you instantly know. 90% of this film was not funny.

The premise is solid, that Sherlock Holmes is a bumbling detective, and therefore causes far more problems than he solves. Unfortunately, the film's writers do not know how to write more than a couple of funny scenes thus voila!... an unfunny comedy

An unfunny comedy belongs in the same category as an unscary horror movie, a boring thriller and a non-musical musical. The elevator goes to the bottom for these kinds of movies.

These two actors deserve far better material than this movie gave them to work with but then again, they did see the scripts before they took the parts ...

Slow ... predictable ... unremarkable
27 December 2018
If you like a slooooooow movie with a predictable ending and uninspired dialogue, this might just work for you. Clint Eastwood, an iconic Hollywood legend, has produced a mildly interesting movie. I am tempted to blow wind in its sails simply because it is Eastwood but I .... can't. I was only partially engaged because the plot was ... well ... boring. A boring plot is tough to overcome ... even Bradley Cooper had below average dialogue to work with.

Boredom is a cardinal sin in films and I am sadly afraid that this film has not yet been atoned for.

Original and action-packed
8 August 2017
This movie was highly original in its plot as well as its ending ... originality is a rare gem in today's movie world so I greatly enjoyed that aspect. Originality can carry a film quite a distance but when you couple it with good actors and non-stop action, it becomes quite an enjoyable viewing experience. I was unable to foresee the ending and that was a welcome surprise. This movie is not for everyone as there is a lot of blood and gore but that is part and parcel of this video package.
