You don't have to be a Pete fan
14 May 2023
I think this show is significantly underrated. It may be an age thing. (I'm older than Pete by a lot).

I do enjoy Pete, but you will love this show if, in your lifetime, Joe Pesci made you laugh out loud 10 times or more, you thought Marissa Tomei was super cool in My Cousin Vinny, you understand the spiritual meaning behind "him, with those ducks", you may never have watched "Everyone Loves Raymond" and you know you never want to have a beer with Ray Romano because he's probably the boring adult in the room, but you love how he dominates every scene he's in across many shows, you secretly suspect Jon Stewart actually is running America behind the scenes...

One of the most underrated romcoms ever?
4 April 2023
This movie is a classic. I wasn't much of a Sandler fan until this movie hit in '98, but I knew him well and my friends loved him. Much like Sandler, this movie is significantly underrated. Drew is simply adorable in this movie which paves the path for these two to join in a series of great romcoms for the next few decades. Just watch if you never have.

The soundtrack is fun. The casting was great right down to Matthew Glave in one of his more memorable roles. Similarly this movie forever etched Ellen Albertini Dow into the mainstream. Lest we forget this movie also features Billy Idol, Kevin Nealon, a memorable Steve Buscemi scene, and why not add Jon Lovitz. This movie IS a great 90's time capsule.

Check out the IMDB "Ratings by Demographic" for a good laugh. Apparently me and 45+ women get along well!

Good early episodes, then turns into This is Us
25 March 2023
Great start, good cast ruined by writers trying to emulate "This is Us" inspired overly emotional crud with a spread of favorite song ballads. Too many shows do this now, zzzz...

The story starts well but as the episodes add up, you realize it's just another show going for the over the top over-emotional cheap trick. Lots of low IQ tear-jerker moments increasing in frequency with each episode. By the 2nd half of the season almost every moment of every episode is packed with one absurdly overly emotional tear-jerker scene after another.

Really like the cast though. Without them this show would be unwatchable.

Lovely told story, feels real yet dreamy
3 March 2023
The story is fun and entertaining. The impressive cast makes it feel real and believable. Well acted and casted. A few cameos put icing on the cake and make this movie a delight to watch.

I'm not a movie/celebrity trivia nerd, but it is worth it to read some trivia/background on both cast and the loosely related actual Hollywood history.

Unlike most of the mediocre content that I watch, this movie feels refreshing in that the story is told in an unpredictable way. And like most of my favorite movies and shows, some of the best moments of this movie happen without words and dialogue and simply through body and facial language of the adorable cast.

Fantastic cast, story drops by season 3
3 March 2023
The show is good but the IMDB score is inflated because most ratings were from season 1. This show really weakens in season 2 and especially season 3.

Love the cast. Well except for Giovanni Ribisi who just isn't that talented in a leading role. The rest of the cast is REALLY good. A fantastic mix of actors from some of my favorite past shows. Great casting except for the leading role IMO.

While season 1 sucked us in, season 2 began to meander around and lose us at times. By season 3, the budget cuts ramp up and the show flow and character relationships look nothing like they did in season 1.

I also spotted like 5 bad editing examples in this show. I'm not one to look or notice, but this show has several instances of editing/changing camera angle and the character in focus is positioned slightly different between angles. Cheap and annoying :-)

Basically the show Parenthood condensed to 8 episodes
30 October 2022
This show looks and feels a lot like the old NBC family drama Parenthood but adds several This Is Us-like cheap sucker punches to the emotions. I enjoyed the mostly good acting and an almost good script with only a few "ya, nobody actually talks like that" moments.

The main flaw was in the early episodes where the story rapidly plots a rather superficial human relationship with no real build up of attraction beyond tasty Italian dishes. It fails to reel you into the depth of the leading couple's love. It feels pretty shallow and unconvincing. Then suddenly they are off to the chapel and hopping the years through a life long epic family love story with a few plot twists from the Gray's Anatomy playbook.

Little emotional or intellectual depth here, but I did appreciate the cast and their performance.

I was glad to see the callout for hospital staff assuming the mixed race leading couple wasn't married. My spouse and I constantly suffer from this experience too.

Slightly good until final season that drags
8 May 2022
I thought this show was above average through the first three seasons. Mostly carried through the performances of Julia Garner (she steals almost every episode) and Laura Linney (who has the most consistent performance of the series).

But halfway through season 3 this show slowly deteriorates into tentative yet predictable and overstated turns. Particularly the unnatural dialogue which is sometimes rushed, sometimes stretched out way too long. It's as if the final episodes were produced by a B-grade crew. Someone gave up on this show and it shows.

Good, meaningful, but cramped?
28 March 2022
I've watched dozens of Japanese movies, lived there for a decade and appreciate Japanese moves for the pace and non-verbal parts of story telling, along with movie endings that sometimes leave room for interpretation or imagination.

I found this movie good. I like the message and weaving into realizations about life, love, and death. To me, this movie and its reception signify yet another new generation of Japanese movie directing and producing. I'm excited to see what comes next.

This movie was heavy on the dialogue. It had a lot to say. I think perhaps it tried to say too much in words/sign language at times. A lot crammed into the script. Enjoyable cast, I just think it would have been even better if it was a little less verbose.

A reminder, engineers are important
24 March 2022
A big fat slam on short-sighted execs who think the only goal is pleasing Wall Street today. It's honest and factual. Shocking to see it all tied together after hearing rumors about these problems from Boeing employees for decades prior.

A fast moving and interesting watch. Just the right amount of details.

Better than anything streamed on Netflix before, by 3 stars
23 March 2022
So good and real/natural that I felt some anxiety watching this show at times. Really well done. Margaret Qualley is a really good actor. I can't wait to see more with her in a lead role.

I thought Andie came in a bit too manic/over the top in her crazy mom portrayal early on, but settled into a more believable freaky bipolar mom role as the show progressed. I'm guessing she was trying to make that early manic point after doing her research. Shades of my own mum.

Well done start to finish. Loved the pace of story telling and casual "we get it" fast forwarding of time. Can't say Netflix has ever streamed anything over 7 stars before. This one is a solid 10! Having real-life mother-daughter Andie and Margeret on screen together was well played.

Underrated, solid cast
2 March 2022
This series is a pleasant trip through an interesting story. A story that reminds us that today's status quo of quick judgements and tendency to choose sides isn't the best way to navigate through life. This series doesn't force feed you with obvious overstated twists and turns. It's something more subtle and down to earth than the more popular ShondaLand big box TV content.

They story is probably told a bit slower than it could be. Someone got a bit carried away stretching this series out to nine long episodes. But I didn't mind too much. Good acting makes most of it an enjoyable watch.

Pleasant surprise to find an underrated show. Just not that common these days.

Enjoyable $uck up make a move about an unenjoyable $uck up
15 January 2022
I found this move via the sound track. It's real, it's messed up, it's Sean Penn. You have to be in the mood to escape the functional world. Like after a bad stupid week at work or a stupid week of life in general. I can't say I enjoyed it, but I can say that I appreciated the perspective, the story, and even the reality that people are generally pretty F'd up. The acting was fine IMO, suited to the roles. Unique and different. I'm cool with that.

It's a rare treat. Native Americans being native Americans. An organic journey of young people weaving their way towards adulthood with entertaining older characters helping them along the way.

Season 3 is real and refreshing TV
5 June 2021
Obviously season 3 production options were limited during the pandemic. What they produced is pretty unique and certainly better than producing nothing at all.

It's like someone dropped a GoPro into Lena's real life, edited it, and uploaded it to Netflix. I love it for being real and different. I like it even more when I read all the negative reviews!

I enjoyed all three seasons Master of None so far, including season 3. Like so many other pivots in this show, season 3 is different, not what you were expecting but a refreshing change from the same story different season norm. It's certainly better than the popular spam alternatives you could watch instead.

The show that gets better from season 3
16 May 2021
Rare to see a show start off slow and get significantly better in seasons 3 and 4. The funny one liners kept me watching initially since the story landed as superficial and cliche. But the actors, funny one liners, and unique scenes kept improving over time. They found some kind of perfect formula in seasons 3 and 4.

Casual goes to Twin Peaks to find thy inner self
16 May 2021
This episode was unique as the main characters subtly dig deep beyond the words of the dialogue. The episode is also a not-so-subtle tip of the hat to Twin Peaks and David Lynch. Great scenes!

Almost no TV makes me laugh, but this show has me rolling
2 May 2021
Bottom line, if you crave something real and down to earth, you will enjoy this show. It's one of the best on TV for down to earth types.

It's a great show. A family drama with so many well played ironic and funny bits worked into it. Very little on TV makes me laugh but with this show there are many gems that get me laughing hard.

Pamela Adlon does a great job carrying the show. All three actors playing her daughters are simply amazing people and they play their eccentric yet realistic rolls to a tee. Rare to find such depth in child actors on TV. I can't figure out why so many reviews here can't stand the daughters... They are beautiful and hilarious characters.

Netflix finally produces something good
7 February 2021
Well done from start to finish. Not the typical Netflix produced junk. An interesting story with an excellent cast. Refreshing in that it that script isn't blunt and in your face. A rather organic and believable story with delightful actors who actually talk like real humans do (in contrast to most Netflix originals).

Really really bad, like really bad
20 December 2020
I was all excited to watch a new end of times sci fi movie. All I got was a good premise, then forced to suffer through excruciatingly slow annoying cliche sub-plots through the middle 80% of the movie. The extended dialogue in many scenes was painful to sit through. Thank god for the fast forward button, you'll need it to survive this dud!

Just ok, unnatural dialogue
23 November 2020
Odd unnatural dialogue. As written by someone who is disconnected from social reality. The impressive cast do a good job making it bearable. But their best efforts couldn't overcome poor writing.

Pretty dumb, some laughs though
29 June 2020
The story is pretty dumb and the actors are kinda mediocre for the most part. But there are some funny parts. It's pretty much an all white cast in an all white setting. Could have been better with a little more diversity I think.

Later seasons start to get boring
14 June 2020
We liked it through the first couple seasons, maybe give those 7 to 8 rating. Okay on the 3rd season, but season 4 was a bit painful at times to watch. It's not flat out terrible like some shows, just occasionally the dialogue is really cheesy and kinda dumb. There are a couple actors who aren't quite as good as the others and can bring down some of the in-between scenes. In season 4 those quality low points became more frequent and hard to ignore. Kinda bummed...

Holy smokes, and it gets better and better
14 May 2020
Unlike most shows this one gets even better over the course of each season. The acting is some of the best of any recent streaming show. It doesn't try to take itself too seriously. It is funny, sad, stressful and joyful. Simply well done all the way through. How refreshing in this day and age.

Don't believe the promoted reviews, BAD ACTING
3 May 2020
This inflated early score will drop in time. The premise is interesting but watching it quickly becomes too painful due to bad acting and weak dialogue. It tries to do that unrealistic funny fast talking dialogue but falls painfully flat.

Apropos to throw this into the trash next to Netflix's 2019 epically bad "Another Life". Very similar in character development, acting, and writing quality. Someone's good plot idea ruined by incompetent execution. Yet again!

I want to see a show where they bring back to life the Scifi writers and producers of the previous millennium to show these stumbling producers of bargain quality streaming shows how its done!

Really well done, refreshing for original streaming content
22 March 2020
We are totally sucked in. Great cast and stories with depth. Much better than expected due to the recent decline of original content on Netflix and Amazon. This one has great writing and directing. Reese is fantastic.
