A Haunting in Venice (2023)
Poirot meets Hammer
Good all round fun with lots of gloomy wide angle shots. Yet it felt like a '70s Hammer horror film with some interesting dialogue. Never quite scared me though. It had all the basic characters for such a film, the American boyfriend, the successful author and the scary kid. Fey was good and Ken held his own version of the Belgian sleuth albeit with a crazy mustach and kept the narrative going. The palazzo was a good setting albeit too dark. The whodunnit approach was intriguing for a modern movie and ok for the original material but a few quirky modern tricks would have made it a bit more exciting.
Marriage (2022)
Fascinatingly awkward
Wonderfully observed banality of everyday life and love. Superb characters and actors pushing the boundaries of what goes for normality and the resulting paranoia leaves one feeling like a voyeur. Great stuff. Ignore those that can't see this and just get disappointed by a slow burn.
The Nevers (2021)
Who's Who?
Tricksy dialogue and time shifting tech makes this like a Dr Who series crossed with Peaky Sherlock. Watchable but 12 episodes maybe 6 too long. Visually dark like 1980s US Superman with Steampunk for added grit.
