Red Notice (2021)
The definition of consumable media
Nobody is really acting in this film. Each actor plays as themselves-the suave jokester, the femme fatale, and the funny buff guy. You might enjoy it enough to forget how many potato chips you've eaten so far, but afterwards it's completely forgettable. It's what you get if you mixed every comedy action movie in a blender.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Enjoyable action
The animation is just stunning. There is so much detail, from twitching muscles to microexpressions. Design of each nation is distinctive and beautiful, but it's unfortunate that each one only gets a few minutes of screen time. I wish this movie was a show so that the world building could have been explored in depth.
My problem with this movie lies in the super weird design choice of the dragons. Why in the world do they look like My Little Ponies? And why fur? Why giant Elsa eyes? They literally look like Elsa's fursonas and it's disturbing. I also disliked Awkwafina's casting. I've watched other movies and videos with her in them, and it's undeniable that she has a unique voice that is easily heard. Unfortunately, my opinion is that it felt jarringly out of place when paired with the obnoxious dragon design and set against a fantasy backdrop.
Yan xi gong lüe (2018)
Fast paced and gripping
As a person who struggles to stay focused on a show, I've never binged anything like I've binged this drama. It sucks you in from the very start. No one is who they seem-my opinions of certain characters swung like a pendulum with each episode. Character writing, costuming, set design and cinematography are top notch. The ending is bittersweet and satisfying as much as it can be given all the craziness that went down.
The Croods: A New Age (2020)
Fun family movie
This sequel is definitely crazier than the first one, so that's up to personal taste. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for my family, full of genuine laugh out loud moments and some cheesy themes. A solid recommendation!
Dracula Untold (2014)
Entertaining
Fun, entertaining popcorn movie. Why others are complaining about the historical inaccuracy is beyond me. It's just a fantasy movie about blood sucking vampires and it doesn't aim to be anything else.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Beautiful visuals, cringey humor
The unique comic book style is great, but I can't give it a higher review because the humor is so grating. The jokes in this animation are basically weird/nonsensical = funny. Nty. The main character is unlikable-she reminded me too much of the self-labeled quirky people I've met, even down to the messy unhygienic look. The "quirky" personality and aesthetic just screams "I'm trying too hard to show I'm not like other people" and my family found the movie to ultimately be a cringefest. Those that share my preferences probably won't enjoy this movie as much.
Qing Ya Ji (2020)
Convoluted storyline
10/10 costume and set design. These areas are consistently stunning in Chinese cinema. The story however, is just told in such a counterintuitive way. Many things are left unexplained, motives are unclear and only clarified somewhat in the end. It felt like jumping into season 3 of a show without watching the previous build up episodes. I'd only recommend this movie for studying its visual aspects.
